Military

Created on 1 December 2006 by President Colonel Guy LaHache, then a captain in the police force, the Haitian People's Army was planned to aid in LaHache's planned takeover. However, it turned out not to be needed as LaHache was invited to run for president. The Haitian People's Army was renamed the Army of Haiti when LaHache came to power. It soon grew from his first 200 men to 2560 standing troops. Many more are trained, but are in reserve and are not assigned to a military group. The purpose of the Army is to defend Haiti from foreign invasions, keep stability and order within, and to allow Haiti to protect its interests. Currently, the Army consists of only one active regiment and approximately 8000 reserve troops. It has never been officially called into action, but most of the active soldiers help police cities and deliver aid to rural villages. There are plans pending in the National Assembly to expand the Army to four regiments, a priority of President LaHache, but fears of foreign aid being withdrawn have stalled it. President LaHache is also the commander of the entire army as its Colonel, the highest rank currently available.

Below is a listing of all groups of the Haitian Army currently active. A regiment, commanded by a Colonel, generally consists of 2048 troops in four companies, but this regiment has five batallions and therefore 2560 troops. A batallion, commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel, has 512 troops. A company, commanded by a Captain, has 128 troops. Although not listed, a platoon, commanded by a Lieutenant, has 32 troops and a squad, commanded by a Sergeant, has 8 troops.
