| Behaviour: Bearded dragons are one of the best pet lizards because they are so friendly and sociable. Most of the time dragons will sit quietly basking away in their favourite spot. While they are basking you may see them do a couple of things. Sometimes they will sit with their mouth open this is normal and is just to cool off, they may also raise thier body off the ground to cool off, I dont know why they dont just walk to the cool end of the cage to cool off maybe ours is just lazy. There is another thing our dragon does that we're not sure if all dragons do. Usually early in the morning he will sit and push his beard out repeatedly we assume he is either just stretching it out or it is another way of cooling off. Bearded dragons spend some time climbing and digging too but they also seem to like running aswell. ?Our dragon especially likes to come out and run around the room. Dont do this with a small dragon they are too skittish for a while, also you have to make sure there is no way of escape or of getting stuck anywhere. Like most animals dragons will occasionally try and get out of the cage by trying to climb the walls, etc. You will probably notice your dragon sleeping in strange places or positions this is normal, our dragon actually circles 3 or 4 times before it lays down to sleep. Another strange thing with bearded dragons is that they sense with their tounge they will lick everything and anything to see what it is. During shedding adult dragons may become very lathargic and may not eat for a day or 2. This is normal and they will be fine in a day or so. Do not try to pull the skin off the dragon as this may damage the new skin underneath. If there is a small patch that holds on for a bit longer lightly mist the area and it should come off by itself. Handling: Bearded dragons are the easiest lizard to handle that weve ever seen. They barely struggle, only if they dont feel supported enough, then they will grab on with their claws. It is very easy to take dragons places with you without a leash, but only when it is warm enough. When picking up a dragon (or any lizard) do not bring your hand down directly over them, this to them will seem as if a bird of prey is swooping to grab them. Bring your hand down slowly to their level beside them and gently scoop them up or let them step on. Dont hold your hand around a bearded dragon just hold your palm out flat and they should sit comfortably. We have found the best place is for them to sit on your shoulder but they do begin to explore after a while. Baby dragons are a lot more skittish and harder to handle until they get used to you. Taking a bearded dragon places can be very fun, like taking them to a pet store when you need to re-stock on crickets. Only bring them out if the temp is high enough for them to be comfortable. We're not sure about other dragons but ours loves the car. He sits with his front feet on the edge of the door at the bottom of the window and watches everything go by. He is usually fine in a store, etc but he wants to explore after a while, but the attention from other people usually satisfies him for a while. Never leave ANY pet in a car as it will overheat and die in a matter of minutes. Also when handling dragons do not hold them by their tails or any other limbs. |
