Why I Am a Parmaniac (a fan of Parminder Nagra)

I was going to write this article later; however, the moderator on Yahoo! Groups wanted to discuss why people follow Mindi as an actress.
Like most fans of Parminder, I got hooked by watching Jessminder in “Bend it Like Beckham.” I knew right after watching that film that Parminder is different in a Hollywood world full of “sell-outs” and beautiful people only “skin-deep.”
By following her acting career and finding out through the media about her personal life, I just became more & more intrigued.
Through Parminder Nagra Yahoo! Groups and ParminderOnline, I have learned more about Parmi and her different roles as an actress.
I have seen and own most of her works : “Second Generation,” “Twelfth Night,” “Donovon Quick,” and “Ella Enchanted.”

As an actress, she portrays real life instead of just playing another role in order to make the big bucks. There’s feeling and emotion that she puts into her work through her body gestures and spoken word. For example: When I show a picture of Parminder to someone who has never even heard of her. Most people that I have shown a picture notice her eyes. Her eyes have some special power or something.
In addition, by following the show “ER,” I have been able to figure out how television really works through dramas & sitcoms.
Indirectly…thanks to Parminder…I know what South Asian culture is all about.
As a high school senior, I just thought that all Indian people were Buddhist and peaceful people…I am glad to be proven wrong about this naïve stance (The real problem: Many people believe this common ideology about "Indian" culture).

By following Parminder, I have been to many different South Asian events like the SASA conference in Los Angeles. Here’s something someone said at SASA:
“Let the Gujaratis make the money while we let the Punjabis party.”
Even in San Francisco, I learn about the 3rdi South Asian Group by meeting Parminder Nagra in person. Based on all the interviews she has done, I think Mindi has a strong will and knows “more than meets the eye.”
Personally, I was the only person who stayed for most of the festival and watched all the films (some partially, some entirely). In addition, I talked to one of the directors of 3rdi during the film festival in November. Now, he still remembers my face when I showed up to a 3rdi screening of “Goodness Gracious Me.”

By going to college at the University of California, Davis…I get to talk to freshman of South Asian descent in my dorm building about the issues of culture and all that stuff.
Being a sociology major, I am interested in how people interact with each other and why?
This constitutes everyone and why they act a certain way…To be honest, the concept of a celebrity does not exist. In reality, all a celebrity is a person famous for doing a specialized skill that has an influence on culture and gets paid millions of dollars for it. No one person is better than someone else just because they make more money. (Sorry for going onto a sociological tangent).
By following Parminder…I am indirectly led to more questions about cultures.
~Thanks Parminder
