Last
evening at around 5:15 PM, I was studying for my Philosophy Final Exam that
I had to take on Wednesday morning at 8 AM. I was in a small lounge studying
alone while some of my Indian buddies were studying for their Chemistry Final
Exam. All of a sudden, I hear one loud noise followed by a round of six loud
noises within .5 seconds of each other. At first, I thought someone was playing
a prank. However, the noises were gun shots. To be honest, I couldn’t
study for my Philosophy final. I only reviewed it for 30 minutes but I knew
I was fine. By the way, when I took my Philosophy Final I was one of the first
ten people to finish in a classroom of about 400 students.
Here’s what happened:
A UC Davis student brings a friend to his dorm. His friend is bored at Davis
(because you need your UCD id card to get everything at the university). So,
he starts harassing some of the residents who are trying to study. Then, some
people talk to the on-campus police. As the on-campus police confront this stranger,
the stranger pulls out his gun and misses the guards. In “self-defense,”
the police shot the guy six times in about a 10 second span. From what I have
heard, this is the first time an incident like that has happened at UC Davis.
As a result, all the news media from Sacramento and even a news outlet from
San Francisco came to cover the incident for the local news. I hit the trifecta
in television interviews.
At 11 PM on Tuesday night: I had an interview aired on the CBS news affiliate
in San Francisco. (The interview lasted about 2 minutes).
At 5 PM on Wednesday evening: I had another interview, aired on the ABC affiliate
in Sacramento.
At 6PM on Wednesday evening: I had one more interview, aired on the Univision
affiliate in Sacramento. I actually do a short interview in Spanish. Yeah!
The stupid UCD student should not have brought his stupid friend to Davis especially
on FINALS WEEK. Many people just don’t have common sense anymore these
days…Stupid politically correctness. Hopefully, this incident won’t
happen again.
Here’s a letter from the UCD chancellor on the full report:
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
By now you may have seen or heard initial news media reports of the tragic shooting death of a young man on campus late yesterday afternoon after he fired first at UC Davis police officers. It is the first officer-involved shooting death to occur on our campus.
I write to provide you with as much information as can be shared at this point in the investigation, to convey our police department's belief that this was an isolated incident and that the campus is secure, and to advise you of support services that are available to those in need.
Here is what we understand to have happened: Three UC Davis police officers responded at 5:06 p.m. yesterday to a report of a suspicious person outside the student housing office. The man was reported to be acting in a bizarre manner, using irrational language and reportedly threatening a student. When the officers approached him, he brandished a handgun and fired at them, causing the officers to return fire. Paramedics responded, but the man died at the scene.
The three officers have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted -- a routine action in cases when an officer fires his or her weapon. I know from conversations with Police Chief Calvin Handy at the scene last night that these officers have been deeply affected.
A
three-tiered investigation is now under way, involving the UC Davis Police Department,
the Yolo County District Attorney's Office and the Yolo County Critical Incident
Response Team. Also, the California Department of Justice is assisting our police
in reconstructing the scene.
