The Webmater's Reflection on being a Fan of Parminder Nagra
I can still recall that fateful day when I was bored at Stonestown Galleria mall in San Francisco, and just happened to watch “Bend It like Beckham” just for fun without any expectations. I was truly captivated by Parminder’s performance as Jessminder, and the rest became history for me. I became part of her fan club on Yahoo! Groups, the online revolution that was ParminderOnLine (POL), meeting Parminder in my hometown, and going to LA to take a tour of the WB studio lot. Of course, those are just some of the most memorable stories for me as I have hundreds and hundreds of more stories about myself and other Parmaniacs (fans of Parminder) that almost occurred on a daily basis. Now, it’s my turn to reflect upon it.
Without a shadow of a doubt, POL: was the best fan website dedicated to any famous actor/actress on the web. The webmaster of POL kept thousands of daily readers from around the world interested in her through the daily updates, which included instantaneous updates from television appearances and magazine articles. BUT, POL was more than just a website created for a great actress. This website told the stories of seven POL staff members and stories from teenagers up to seventy year olds from a wide-array of socioeconomic backgrounds and life experiences/perspectives. This website was truly addicting to many of its readers. Even Parminder herself admitted that she followed the website in order to check out the daily updates about her and stories from other Parmaniacs. However, the phenomena of POL ended at the end of the twelfth season of “ER”. I am not going to try to speculate why the webmaster did shut down the site, but I know that the webmaster spent about at least 2-4 hours daily updating the website as that would definitely take a toll on anyone spending that much time on one project. Like with most things in life, there were the good and bad moments with the site. To sum up the experience of POL for me, “What a ride it was just like a life-ridden roller coaster that helped to bring a good laugh to some and change the lives of so many others.”
Now, “ER” is in its thirteenth season on television (a really long time for a TV show). Parminder character, Neela Rasgotra, has been playing a prominent role as part of a great ensemble of actors. The fan club on Yahoo! Groups has done a good job trying to keep Parmaniacs engaged in discussions about the “ER” episodes and other stuff. In addition, the creators of ParminderNagraOnline (PNO) have done a great job in updating the website. It’s definitely been a fun and I have learned a lot about myself and others while being a fan of someone. Who knew?
There’s a great YouTubesque video of some “ER” actors trying to shooting an "ER"promo on Google video. There's a special appearance by that jolly, ole Frosty the Snowman in this video clip. Enjoy!
