Raveen Kat

A musty smell floats on the air outside the cave. You are reluctant to enter that gaping black hole. Crows cry out raucously above you, and shadows dance as the sun begins its descent. Trying to distract your mind, you watch the shadows. Watch them flicker about. You become oddly detached as they sway and spin. Shadows of insects, of birds, of leaves as the sun peeks through branches above to weave patterns on the dirt. A cloud passes overhead, obscuring the sun, and suddenly everything is darker. Everything is shadow. Shadows upon shadows, playing with the different shades of gray. One particularly dark spot is shaped almost like a bird. Curiously, you look up to see what made the shadow, but nothing is there. When you look back, the shape seems almost solid, but it's definitely a shadow. As you inspect it, it begins to to move.

It starts slowly, moving about in hesitant jerks. You nervously take a step back, all senses now fully alert. This wasn't an ordinary shadow. As you watch, two red patches appear in it, and suddenly--it's a fly? Swallowing a frantic shriek, you stumble back with your hands thrust out before you. The former shadow jumps off the ground and begins to fly. The shadow is flying. The fly is flying. But--that's impossible! As it flies closer, you swat at it, trying to get it away. It nimbly avoids your hands. You half-turn to run to a safer distance, but find yourself face-to-face with a black, brown, and white feline.

"What are you doing?" the kat asks coolly in a calm, hard voice. "Did you come here just to harrass Novuxa?"

"What? Novuxa? What, no. I didn't come here to harrass Novuxa. Who's Novuxa? Who're you? What?" You fumble around for words.

"Novuxa, my mimic. I believe I saw you swat at him." His eyes harden and narrow a bit. "Well? Are you going to admit it? Or shall I force you?"

You gasp and step back as you see the shadow-fly-thing alight on this creature's shoulder. "Look out!" you cry before you can stop yourself. "On your--"

The kat bars its teeth in annoyance. "I thought before you were an evil rascal, but I see now you're just an idiot. Novuxa would not hurt me." He gently pushes the fly into the air. "He would not hesitate to hurt you, however, if he sees that is my intention. Get out of my territory, before I set him upon you. Now. I want my dinner." When you hesitate, he snarls, "Go!"

You back away from the duo, turning only when you reach the cover of trees. You would gladly go, in fact, as opposed to staying there with the kat and the fly. You eagerly picture the comfortable room of home.
