Cyen (and an egg)

The path you walk is overgrown, and almost not distinguishable as a path at all. Unseen roots seek to trip unwary feet, and you have fallen victim to their tricks any number of times. Yet you press on.

It is with great disgust that you stop and, scowling, attempt to scrape a blob of feces off the sole of your shoe. You'd carry that smell with you for a long while. You brood angrily over your misfortune; in fact, by the time you reach your destination, frustration has blinded you so much that you almost miss it altogether.

Luckily, a frightened gasp and rustle alert you to the presence of the being you seek as you barge into its home. Looking around, it takes you a moment to see the creature; by the time you do, it's gotten far enough into the undergrowth as to be out of reach.

"Please come out," you whisper, kneeling before the obstructive screen of branches. "I'm not going to hurt you."

It looks around wildly, and you can see it register paths of escape, but it doesn't move away. But then, it didn't move any closer, either.

"Please?" you ask again, reaching into the bushes.

It squeals and backs up, dancing agitatedly around. Hastily, you draw your hand back--but you begin to wonder why it didn't just run away.

"Sorry, sorry!" you murmer, trying to comfort the creature. "It's okay. I didn't mean to frighten you. It's okay..."

"No," it mutters softly, shaking its head. Then, through its constantly moving legs, you notice something blue, and finally recognize how it's acting. It seems not to want to leave its post. You then silently ridicule yourself; animals didn't have that kind of mental capacity.

"What is that? C'mon, move away, move away," you say, trying to will the creature to do so.

"No! It's mine!" the young thing spurts angrily, eyes open even wider than before--if that was possible.

Shocked, you draw back. You'd assumed its earlier "no" was just a random word it picked up, but now you realize the creature had to be sentient. Gently, you ask, "What's yours?"

"The egg is mine! I found it! Go--"

"I just want to see it," you interrupt soothingly.

Glaring, it moves away.

A small blue egg lies on the ground, gently resting against a root. This small animal must have been taking care of it for a while, by the look of the area, and you suddenly feel sorry for it. After as long as it looks to have been here, you doubt it would ever hatch.

"I don't want you to be disappointed, but--"

"No, leave now," it says impatiently over your voice. "Leave before you hurt it."

"I'm trying to help you, here," you say reproachfully, attempting to reason with the thing.

"I don't care! Just go." It looks on the point of coming out and making you got itself.

"Alright, alright, fine," you say through gritted teeth as you stand and stretch your cramped muscles. "I'm going..."

You turn and walk away.
