Viruses and Disease.
The information below along with links to CDC (Centers For Disease Control) and other recognized agencies, will keep you updated on the spread and control efforts being made regarding the West Nile Virus and the different strains of encephalitis transmitted by infected mosquitoes.
West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain or meningitis, which is inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal chord.  It is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.  It is not spread from person to person.  Symptoms vary with severity, mild cases experience fever, headache and body aches.  Some persons also develop a mild rash or swollen lymph glands. In some cases, particularly the elderly, it can cause serious disease that affects brain tissue.  At its most serious, it can cause permanent neurological damage and can be fatal.  Encephalitis symptoms include the rapid onset of severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, confusion, loss of consciousness (coma), and muscle weakness.  Death may occur in some instances.  From the time of infection to the onset of symptoms is usually 5 to 15 days.
LaCrosse Encephalitis

LaCrosse encephalitis is a rare viral disease that is spread by infected mosquitoes. It usually affects children.
LaCrosse encephalitis is one of several mosquito-borne virus diseases that can affect the central nervous system and cause severe complications.
LaCrosse encephalitis is found mainly in the upper midwestern United States and in the Appalachian region.
There is no specific treatment for LaCrosse encephalitis.
Prevention centers on controlling mosquitoes and avoiding mosquito bites.
