The following from the Walhalla, ND Mountaineer newspaper July 1935 John J. Renville 1853-1935, Resident of State Since 1853, Dies Walhalla, N.D. John J. Renville, who died at his home here recently, was generally accorded the disinction of having lived longer in North Dakota than any other person. Born in Pembina August 7, 1853 Mr. Renville was a resident of Pembina county until his death July 5th - a period of almost 82 years. He was also recognized as the state's oldest Democrat. Mr. Renville's father, Francis Renville, was one of the first white men in this section. He carried mail by dogsled between Pembina and St.Paul for many years and was killed by Sioux Indians on one of his many journeys. John became a mail carier at an early age and made four trips a month from Pembina to Cavalier and Walhalla with an ox team or on horseback. In 1881 he was married to Mathilda Brache at Leroy. They made their home at Cavalier for many years before moving to Walhalla 23 years ago. (1912). The widow and nine children survive. They are Roy Renville of Carman, Manitoba; Mrs. Daniel Livingston of Weyburn, Sask; Fred and Archie Reville of Harvey, ND; Ernest Renville of Minneapolis, and Peter, Louis, and Joe Renville of Walhalla. Funeral services were held at St.Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla with Rev. Longpre officiating. Burial was in the Walhalla cemetery. Article in The Walhalla Mountaineer Newspaper Thursday, December 21, 1933 Local Man Believed to have lived longest in state John Renville, now 80 years old, has spent his entire life in Pembina County Walhalla claims the distinction of being the home of the man who has lived longer in North Dakota than any other living citizen of the state. This man is John Renville, who was born in Pembina August 7, 1853 and has l;ived conyinuously in this county and state since that time. Today, December 21, Mr. Renville has lived in this county and state eighty years and four months and fourteen days. The Mountaineer believes this is a record not held by any other living man in North Dakota. Mr. Renville's father, Francois Renville, lived at Pembina before him and followed the hazardous occupation of carrying mail from St. Paul to Pembina by dog team. He also made frequent trips to Fort Garry, Manitoba. He was killed by Sioux Indians on one of his many trips from St. Paul to Pembina. Mr. Renville's mother then received a contract to carry mail from the United States government, which contract was taken over by John Renville when he became of sufficient age. This contract called for a trip from Pembina to Cavalier one week and from Pembina to Walhalla the next. The trip was generally made on horseback and sometimes by ox-cart. Mr. Renville remembers plainly the days of the dog teams, the old Fort Garry Trading Post, the hunters' expeditions out over the plains for buffalo to provide "pemmican" for the early settlers through the long winters and the days of the Red River Valley ox-carts. At a later date, as more settlers came to this section, he saw the overland stage replace the ox-cart. The changes this pioneer has witnessed in this section of North Dakota are remarkable. Married to Mathilda LaBrach, Mr. Renville homesteaded in 1887, two years before Dakota Territory became a state, on a farm 17 miles east of Walhalla, near the town of Bathgate. Later he lived in the city of Cavalier before coming to his present home in Walhalla about 20 years ago. Although well advanced in years Mr. Renville is in good health and can converse very interestingly in his natural French tongue regarding his experiences in this county in the early days. While he makes no claims for himself, The Mountaineer believes that he has lived continuously in the state longer than any other living man or woman. We cannot establish this claim for Mr. Renville beyond saying that he has resided the longest in this county and state longer than any other individual whose case has come to our attention.
