Died -- Renville At his home in Pembina, on Sunday, October 3rd, 1909, Jean-Baptiste Renville, aged 69 years. In the death of Mr. Renville, one of the few remaining links of the early original inhabitants of this section is broken. He was a direct descendant of one of the younger generation of the Metis who hunted the buffalo and trapped and hunted other animals for their furs, which they sold to the Hudson's Bay Co., up to about 50 years ago. His uncle [*see Note] was one of the leaders of those simple-hearted people, and for whom the former Renville County was named, and Renville County, Minnesota was also named to perpetuate the memory of the same family. Mr. Renville's father died when he was young. He was a mail carrier over the wilderness of the prairie, from here to Fort Abercrombie for a long time. Not arriving from one of his trips, a search was made and he was found in his wayside camp, having died alone from natural causes. Personally Mr. Renville was genial and friendly. He was a friend to all who knew him. Many expressions of regret and sympathy for the aged widow are made by our citizens. He leaves a son, Jean-Baptiste, Jr., with whom he has made his home. == Adieu mon ami. *Note: I am pretty sure that this should read "his grandfather", Joseph Renville. Renville County, ND and Renville County MN were named after him. If Thomas Edworthy's data is right, then this John-Baptsite Renville would be the son of Francois-Joseph Renville, born 1801-1807-1815 and died 12 Feb. 1866. This would make John-Baptiste approximately 20 years of age when his father died Reference to his age being 69 years is consistent with the data Thomas Edworthy has on file.. In an article in The Walhalla Mountaineer newspaper of Thursday, December 21, 1933, on Joachim [John Renville], a brother to John-Baptiste Renville, states "that his father, Francois Renville, lived in Pembina and followed the hazardous occupation of carrying the mail from St. Paul to Pembina with frequent trips to Fort Garry, Manitoba. He was illed by Sioux Indians on one of his many trips from St. Paul to Pembina. John-Baptiste Renville also had a son John-Baptiste, Jr., married to Nancy Gosselin.
