Running trails @ Chegwidden residence
McLean, VA
As AJ ran up the last hill toward home, the sun rose above
the ridge. In the new light he saw the
dew sparkle across the grass, and fragrant blooms cover the trees. He loved spring because it meant baseball,
and nothing but baseball could occupy this much thought. Except Lieutenant Colonel Sarah MacKenzie:
lately she held his attention.
AJ ran faster trying to clear his mind. With all the trouble the Navy was having, he
needed to be sharp. He entered the yard
behind the garage, and slowed to a walk.
He was taking a deep, relaxing breath, when a woman’s voice took him by
surprise.
“Sir,” she said.
AJ pulled his sweatshirt off. His sweaty t-shirt clung to his skin, making Mac blush.
“Colonel. Hi. What are you doing here?” A smile crept across his face.
“Good morning, sir.
I don’t mean to bother you, but the SECNAV called. He was unable to reach you, and he wants
your report on the sub incident.
Apparently, he is meeting with an attaché from the Japanese government
this morning. He thought it would be
best if you joined them,” she replied awkwardly, and then quickly looked away.
“He thinks I should join them,” AJ answered flatly. The smile left his lips as he thought about
the meeting, “I guess that puts a damper on my breakfast. You didn’t have to come out here. I’m sure the SECNAV would have found me
sooner or later,” he said, even though he was glad she came.
Mac was still blushing when she handed him a file, “Admiral,
I just thought you might want to save yourself a trip. Tiner told me your notes were on your desk.”
“Thank you, Colonel.
Still, it was on my way in.”
AJ noticed Mac’s face; she seemed to be avoiding him directly. “Colonel?
Is everything all right?” he asked.
“Yes, sir. I was
just thinking that it was no trouble.
Admiral, do you want me to make you a quick breakfast?” she asked. “Ah, sir, I mean after all, you need your
strength for the meeting.” Again, Mac
looked away from him.
“Well, the SECNAV does suck all the strength out of you,” he
replied wanting to yell yes. “But, I’ll
be OK. Don’t you have work to do on the
Collins case?” AJ said, trying to change the subject.
“Yes, sir. I better
get back. Bud is probably wondering
where I am,” Mac replied as she turned and headed for her car.
“It’s early, Colonel.
Bud is still at home.”
“Right. Sir. I better go. The Collins case,” Mac jumped in her car, and waved good-bye as
she backed down the drive.
AJ went inside, and headed for the shower. “Sarah,” he said tossing the file on his
bed. “You always know exactly what I need.”

Mac sat in her chair spinning her engagement ring. She tried to listen to Bud, but she could
not shake the thoughts that flooded her mind.
Was this the right thing? Was
Mic the “one”? The tension between her
and Mic was escalating. For a lawyer,
he lacked communication skills. The
surprises kept coming. It felt as if she
was holding a live grenade. “If I pull
the pin”, Mac thought, “will I be able to release it before it blows?” The last thing she wanted was another
troubled and pain-filled relationship.
“Ma’am…ma’am?” Bud’s voice startled her.
“Ahh…Bud. Sorry I
was somewhere else.”
“It’s all right Colonel, I didn’t mean to disturb you, but…”
he said and pointed to Tiner who stood in the doorway behind him.
“Sorry for the interruption, ma’am, but the Admiral wants to
see you and the Lieutenant ASAP.”
“Thanks, Tiner,” she replied knowing that the Admiral wanted
an update on the Collins case. The
problem was, they had not prepared the update yet.
As she and Bud headed to the Admiral’s office, Mac thought
about that morning. She was still
embarrassed, and unsure how AJ would react.
Still, this was going to be a wonderful distraction. “AJ,” she mused. “You are the ultimate. So confident, so sexy!”

“Smells great, love,” Mic said as he slipped out of his
suit, “I’m going to grab a quick shower.”
Mic leaned over and gave Mac a peck on the cheek. “Everything OK now?” he asked worrying about
last night.
“Everything is fine, Mic,” she replied hoping the smile
would be convincing.
Everything was not fine.
Mic was going out of town to work on his new case, but they settled it
at the last minute. After the fight
they had yesterday, Mac really wanted the time alone--She needed the time alone.
Turning off the
timer, she pulled the pot roast out of the oven, thinking back to the time in
the JAG kitchen when she had prepared pot roast. God, it must be almost two years ago? She and AJ stood talking, he was going on about this and that,
and how they could mean something else.
At the time she had know idea what he meant. Now Mac wished she could go back in time. She would have done something more than
offer part of her dinner. She did not
know what, but she would have done something.
Mac could hear Brumby humming in the shower. “I wonder if he sings in the shower?” she quietly asked out loud. Picturing AJ in the shower, humming a
tune. What tune? A smile spread across her face when she
thought about that night in McMurphy’s.
AJ had started singing ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’, and they all joined
in.
“Marine,” she whispered.
The thought of watching him take a shower enveloped her. Slowly removing the medals, his stars. Unbuttoning the white shirt, releasing the
buckle of his pants. She could imagine
AJ turning to her, and giving that mischievous grin as he pulled off his
t-shirt and pants.
“I’m going to take a quick shower,” he would say, as he gave
her a peck on the cheek. Mac felt the
warmth creep up her face, she was smiling when Mic surprised her with his
words.
“I guess everything is OK judging by that smile on your
face,” he said as he took her in his arms.
“I love you, Sarah.”
“Yeah, Mic, me too,” she said.

AJ, on his way back from the kitchen, noticed Lieutenant
Singer in Mac’s office. Mac was not
in. “What is she doing?” he
grumbled.
“Lose something Lieutenant?” he snapped as he slipped up
behind her. He loved the element of
surprise.
“No, sir. I can’t
find the files you asked me to get,” she replied dryly.
“Did you check with Tiner?
He’s had them since last night,” AJ growled as he folded his arms across
his chest.
Singer was an ass
kisser. However, AJ could not trust her
true motives. Capable of handling the
more difficult cases, she had to earn them just like everyone else. Something she could not grasp.
AJ stood in Mac’s doorway surveying the bullpen as
Lieutenant Singer left. He was
concerned about Mac. Where was she this
morning? She missed the briefing, and
he knew things troubled her. How could
he help? He would remain neutral
because of the engagement, and his position as commanding officer. “If he’s hurt her,” he thought. No, Brumby was a good man, but things did
not feel right.

Mac’s Corvette

The red corvette raced down Interstate sixty-six. Mac knew the Admiral would be fuming because
she missed the briefing, but what could she do? Her cell phone battery was dead, and she might as well be dead
too. “Marine! Get your head on straight!” she yelled hitting the steering wheel
with her fist.
Although angry about
her lack of progress, yesterday AJ spoke to her through lingering eyes. His body language soothed her. “No! Stop it!” she yelled, again.
Mac slammed the accelerator to the floor. “I need to get to JAG, before he kills me!!”
she groaned not noticing the sirens and flashing lights of the Virginia State
Patrol car behind her. “Damn!” she
yelled.

Mac flew into her
office, dropped her briefcase on the floor, and hastily rummaged through the
pile of files on her desk. AJ appeared
minutes later, and stood next to her.
“Little late today, Marine,” he said with that mischievous
grin.
Mac paid no attention to his smile. “Sorry, sir. I’m behind on the Collins case, I forgot to charge my cell phone,
I got this speeding ticket, and, sir, I have no excuse for being late today,”
she said in amazement.
“You need a few
days off. Let Bud handle the Collins
case so you can recharge, Sarah,” AJ said tenderly moving closer to her.
Catching her breath, she scanned the bullpen to see if
anyone was lurking. “He should tear
into me for being late and behind,” she thought to herself.
“Sarah, take the time off.
I’ll fix the paperwork. You fill
Bud in. Tell him I want this case filed
by Friday,” he said taking a step closer.
“But, sir, I don’t deserve a break. I deserve a kick in the six,” she replied,
looking into his brown eyes.
“I’ll decide who gets a kick in the six, and when!” AJ
retorted. “You are taking the rest of
the week off. That is an order,
Colonel!” Their eyes locked together. He grinned again, and left for his office.
Mac watched him walk away.
He made her feel breathless, why couldn’t Mic do the same?

Mac decided to leave town without Mic, but how could she
explain it to him? Knowing that Mic
would, she called JAG not wanting any surprises. Gunny answered, thank god.
They made arrangements for her to be out on “official JAG
business”. Mac knew bringing Gunnery
Sergeant Galindez to JAG was a great idea, even if AJ thought it was his. She
laughed out loud as she placed her bags by the door.
Mac called Harriet too.
Harriet, a loyal friend, understood why she needed a break.
“Bye, Jingo,” Mac said to the dog who was following her
close behind. “I can’t take you with me
this time.”
