Part 8
Kira was tired. It had been a long day. She felt the muse tugging at her and walked over to the computer and sat down. I don’t know if I can cope with these memories tonight. She sighed. The pull was too strong and she brought up the appropriate file. Now…where was I? Oh yeah. I had just left her for the first time. Kira smiled remembering that day and the phone calls as she headed for home.
*************************
The phone was ringing. I hope that’s Kira! Morgan raced for the phone. “Hello.”
“Hi there!” Kira tried to sound cheerful.
“Hi there yourself. Where are you? How are you doing? You ok?” the words shot out.
Kira laughed. I’m in Illinois, I’m doing fine, yes I’m ok.” her voice quieted. “I miss you like crazy already.”
“I miss you too.” Morgan replied. “How long will it take you to get home?”
“Oh I don’t know, about 7 hours.” Kira giggled. “Less time than it took me to get down here….I won’t get lost this time.”
“You get lost this time, I better get a phone call.” Morgan playfully warned. “Or else.”
“Or else what?” Kira wanted to know.
“Let’s just say, you’ll find out and leave it at that.” Morgan responded with a low growl.
“Well alrighty then….” Kira was laughing out loud.
Kira’s laughter simmered down and an awkward silence followed. Morgan ran her hand through her thick dark hair. Gods I miss her. “Well I won’t keep you. We don’t want to run your phone bill up too high.” she finally said.
“Ok.” came the quiet response. “Call me in an hour?”
“You got it! Talk to you then hon.” Morgan said slowly, not wanting the contact to end.
“I love you Morgan.”
“Love you too. Drive safe.”
“Don’t worry, I will. Talk to you in a bit.” Kira said through the new tears that were shamelessly falling down her face.
Tears had somehow managed to find their way into Morgan’s eyes as well. She brushed them away impatiently. “Yeah…talk to you in a bit.”
She’s crying too. God help us both. I have to find a way to get back down there…and soon.
“Later gater.”
“After while crocodile.”
The connection was severed and both of them gave into their tears.

Kira’s cell phone rang. “I’m fine…I’m in Wisconsin…and I haven’t gotten lost.” she said with a grin. She could hear Morgan laughing. “I’m driving like a mad fiend if you want to know the truth.”
Morgan’s laughter subsided. “How come you’re driving so fast?”
“Honest answer?” Kira asked.
“Yeah…”
“Well I figure it this way…sooner I get home….sooner I can start planning a return trip down there.” she said simply.
The comment caught Morgan off guard. “What did you just say?”
Kira took a deep breath. “I think you heard me. I’ve been giving it a lot of thought since I left. By my calculations, I can probably be back down there in a couple of days.”
“A couple of days…” came Morgan’s stunned response. “What…how…??”
“Is that ok?” Kira was suddenly unsure of herself. “I mean…if…” Kira’s hands were nervously tapping on the steering wheel as she waited for Morgan’s response.
“Whooooohooooo!”
Kira pulled the phone away from her ear as Morgan’s response blew her eardrum away. “I guess you’re ok with it then?” she grinned as she put the phone back to her ear.
“Ok with it? You’re kidding right?” Morgan was practically shouting. She’s coming back. She’s not like the others is she?! “No, I’m not kidding.” she heard Kira say. “I figure, I can go home, take care of what I need to take care of, do some laundry, and be back on the road by Friday.”
“Kira…are you sure? I mean….that soon? You can really come back that soon?” Morgan was still in a state of shock.
Kira‘s voice was shaking. “Yeah that soon.”
Morgan heard the hesitation in Kira’s voice. Do I want you back that soon? Who are we kidding…I want you back now…but I can wait until Friday. At least I think I can wait that long. “Friday won’t get here soon enough for me.” she heard herself saying.
Whew! Had me worried there for a minute woman! “For me either. Friday it is then. I’ll see you then.” Kira shook her head as she smiled. I must be nuts….ok I am nuts….about her. I can’t stay away. “I’d better get back to concentrating on my driving…”
“You’re gonna drop that bomb and then tell me you’ve gotta go??” Morgan sputtered as she started pacing the floor. She was wound tighter than a drum. She’s coming back in four days….It’s gonna be a long week.
********************************
Kira’s eyes were misted over with tears. We were so in love. Gods….I miss that feeling. She wiped the tears away and looked at the screen. I did exactly what I said I was going to do. I went home, cleaned, made arrangements for everything, and was almost ready to go by Thursday night. Gods I remember what a long week that was. Seemed to drag on forever. She grinned as she remembered the last person that saw her before she had left for the second trip. Boy that was a fun night. She put her hands on the keyboard and began typing steadily as the memory washed over her in a wave.
***************************
Kira was busy. She had a few things to do before she left. It didn’t help that Morgan was calling her every five minutes but she ginned in spite of herself. That silly woman…..
Her roaming thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a knock on her door. Who could that be? She walked over and opened the door. Standing there, looking irate, was Tanya. I just know I’m gonna wish I hadn’t opened the door….I just know it. Oh well…let’s get this over with.
“What the hell is going on? I heard that you’re leaving to go back to Indiana.” Tanya demanded.
“THAT is none of your business.” Kira snapped. “Now if you don’t mind….”
Tanya pushed past Kira and stormed into her living room. She turned and continued her tirade. “Are you crazy? You just met. Weren’t you gone long enough last time. Jesus! You just came back!”
Kira mumbled, “Sounds like someone’s jealous…”
Tanya was pacing now, Kira’s comment unheard. “I mean, the sex can’t be that good can it?”
“Yup, definitely jealous.” Kira said under her breath.
“What is it about her that makes you want to go running back down there again so soon? You can’t go back there!”
Kira was angry now. “Why the hell not? Who are you to say what I CAN or CANNOT do!” She pointed a finger at Tanya’s now still form. “I love her. Do you get that? I’m IN love with her. Are you that jealous?” She was really fuming now. “You had your chance Tanya. You blew it.” It was her turn to pace. “And now you’re mad because I’ve moved on with my life and found someone who makes me happy?” She stopped directly in front of Tanya, looked her dead in the eye, and raged on, “That’s it isn’t it?” Her voice dropped to a growl. “C’mon admit it Tanya….You can’t stand the fact that I’m in love with someone else.”
Tanya looked at her in shock. “No! That’s not it!” She stuttered as she stood there shaking her head.
“Bullshit!“ Kira drawled. “It just kills you to know I have someone and that it isn‘t you…that I‘m not down here anymore…pining away for you??” She wandered over and sat down on the couch.
Tanya didn’t know what to say. She had never seen Kira so angry. “That’s not it.” she said lamely.
“Then what is it exactly?” Kira said with a smirk.
“I’m concerned. That’s all. You’re in a manic…and take it from one who knows….they can do…well strange things to you.”
“Yeah you’re really concerned.” Kira growled. “You’ll come up with any excuse won’t you?”
“It’s not an excuse and you know it!” Tanya shot back. “Think about it. You’ve known her….what a little over a month now and yet here you are putting everything in your life on hold so you can go running back down to her.”
“And your point is what?” Kira wanted to know.
“I’m worried about what all this COULD do to you.” Tanya said quietly. “Do you really know what you’re doing?”
Kira’s temper was simmering down a notch. “I’ve given this a lot of thought. I’m going and that’s the end of it.”
“Fine! Just don’t come crying to me when she breaks your heart,” Tanya replied. “and she will you know.”
The anger resurfaced. “You should know all about broken hearts Tanya. God knows you’ve broken enough of them…..including mine.” She got up and walked over to the door. “Now if you’ll excuse me….I have things to do.”
Tanya moved towards the door. “You’re going to regret this someday.”
“Yeah? Well if I do…then it’s for me to deal with.” Kira said hotly.
“Take care of yourself.” And with that Tanya was gone.
“Don’t worry….I’ll be just fine.” Kira said to the empty hallway.
**********************************
I told her I’d be fine and I was…we were….for awhile. Kira sighed. It was too much for her tonight. Will this aching every go away? After all we went through, how is it I can still feel this way for her? The tears began to fall. She wiped them away angrily. What we had…..we both thought it was so special…and it was….wasn’t it? Isn’t it?
Kira popped a cd into her player and tried to relax. Go away muse. I’m done for the night. I can’t do anymore. Leave me alone for just a little while will ya? It was useless. The muse was far from done. There was more to be said, more to remember. She didn’t want to go there but the muse won out. She stared at the screen. Ok I’m here…..whatcha got?
The music started to play and Kira was once again trapped by memories of the past.
*********************************
Kira burst through the door. “Honey…..” she called. “I’m home.” Morgan popped her head out into the hallway. She ran over and took the smaller woman into her arms, picked her up and spun her around, and then kissed her soundly.
“Gods am I glad to see you!” Morgan exclaimed.
Kira was laughing and trying to talk at the same time. She took a deep breath and tried to calm her rapidly beating heart. “I missed you so much.” she kissed Morgan back. “It was such a long drive…” Another kiss. “I thought I’d never get here.” Another kiss. Gods it feels so good to be back in her arms again. I’m home.
“It wasn’t the same without you here. You were only gone a few days but it felt like forever,” Morgan said quietly in Kira’s ear.
“I know….it felt that way for me too.” Kira was too choked up to say anything more.
The pair stood and just gazed at each other for a few moments. They were each wrapped up in the warm feeling surrounding them.
Kira finally broke the silence. “Is this….is this real?”
“I don’t know. If it’s a dream then don’t EVER wake me up.”

The next few days were spent reveling in the close bond the two of them shared. Neither one could believe how strong of a bond it was. In the back of both minds lurked the ever present knowledge that soon Kira would have to return home again. Morgan finally brought it up. She had done some serious thinking and wasn’t quite sure how Kira was going to handle what she had to say. Morgan decided it was worth the risk.
“When were you thinking of heading home?”
Kira turned and stared at her partner. “I….I hadn’t really thought about it much.” she said slowly. “I…I don’t want to go home,” Kira sighed. “but I guess I will have to at some point won’t I?”
“Well, I’ve been doing some thinking about it.” Morgan said as she gathered her courage. She took a deep breath. Do I really want to do this? Am I that sure? She looked at the smaller blonde and shook her head slightly. I can’t stand the thought of being away from her again. I just can’t…. Mind made up she let the question fall from her lips. “What if you didn’t have to leave?”
Kira did a double take. “What….? I don’t understand.”
“I said…what if you didn’t have to?”
Kira was astonished. “How….How can that be possible?” A thought was pulling at her. She couldn’t be saying what I think she is….could she?
“Well…You would have to go home for a short time…..” Another deep breath. C’mon Morgan you can do this. Morgan looked down and realized she was shaking. “to pack.” She let that sink in.
Kira was dumbfounded. “Pack?” she said, her voice quivering. She squirmed around until she was facing Morgan on the bed. “Pack?” she repeated. She couldn’t keep the hopeful look off her face.
Morgan took both of Kira’s hands into her own. She dared to sneak a glance into the emerald eyes that were staring back at her. She could see the hope that her comments had brought to those eyes and it gave her the courage she needed to continue. “I don’t want to be away from you again….so I was thinking….well…if you wanted to….you could….well…maybe….” Morgan couldn’t get it all out and it was frustrating the hell out of her. She took another deep breath to steady herself. “Well I was thinking maybe you might want to move in here….with me.” She finally managed to get out.
Those emerald eyes were now sparkling with unshed tears. “Do you….Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” came the simple quiet answer.
Kira took a moment. She couldn’t believe it. She wants me to move in with her!!!! Whoooohooooo!!!!
Morgan was getting edgy. Kira wasn’t saying anything. Next thing she knew, Kira had her arms wrapped tightly around her body and was squeezing the living daylights out of her.
“Does that mean yes?” Morgan whispered into the ear that was so conveniently close.
Kira pulled back slightly, looked into those beautiful sky blue eyes and drawled out her response. “How long do you think it will take me to pack all my stuff and get it down here?”
