Part 6
EIGHT MONTHS LATER
Kira sat back and stared at her computer screen. This was much harder than she thought it would be. Things were so much simpler then. How had things gotten to the point they were now?
God I miss her so much sometimes. How did all of this happen and how did we survive it? How did I survive it?
Things had gone so well between them those first few days. Kira thought she had finally found the one she would spend the rest of her life with. Apparently Morgan had too for on Kira’s third night there she had proposed and Kira had accepted. They were engaged and had even gone as far as to set their wedding day. It was to be one year to the day that Kira had walked in Morgan’s front door. February 24th, 2003.
Kira chuckled as she recalled the mock argument with Morgan over what they would wear at the wedding.
“I can see it now….” Morgan was saying. “You in a white dress…me in my tux….”
“Um…. Hon…. I’m not wearing a dress.” Kira replied with a smile.
“Well I’m not going to wear it. One of us has to.” Morgan giggled.
“Well, I’ll wear white, no problem, but not a white dress! I’ll wear a very nice white pants suit.”
“Oh no!” Morgan exclaimed. “A dress. I can’t wait to see you in it.”
“Honey….I’m not wearing a dress and that’s final. I don’t ’do’ dresses luv. I know! I’ll wear a white tux and you can wear a formal black one?” Kira responded hopefully.
Morgan laughed. “I don’t think so. I’m the butch and I’m wearing the tux….”
Kira just grinned. “Well I think we have plenty of time to think about what we’ll wear….it’s not for another year, and I’m sure by then I’ll have you talked out of the idea of me in a dress.”
“Oh I don’t think so. You can try….but I doubt you’ll succeed.” Morgan replied smugly.
We’ll just see about that won’t we? Oh come on, you know you’ll do it if she really wants you to. She leaned over and gave Morgan a warm kiss. “I love you.”
Morgan’s eyes softened. “I love you too. You have no idea how much.”
“I think I have a pretty good idea. I see it in your eyes luv, every time you look at me. I like that. A lot.”
“Me too.” Morgan replied softly. “I don’t ever want this feeling to go away.”
“I don’t either. Promise me it won’t.”
Morgan looked deep into Kira’s eyes. “I promise. Will you make me the same promise?”
The tears came unbidden to Kira’s eyes. “I promise that and more. I want to be your everything now and forever.” Kira smiled through the tears. “Think you can handle it?”
Morgan’s eyes were misted over but she was smiling as well. “Yeah, I think I can swing it.”
************************
Where did all of that love go? How could it have simply drifted away? I’ve never felt that way for anyone in my life. I doubt I ever will again. Kira shook her head. Maybe writing all of this down wasn’t such a good idea. It was trudging up some things she thought were better left where they were….in the past. She continued staring at her screen and one by one the memories of that first week came crashing in on her and it was all she could do to stay focused.
I’ve started this. I have to finish it. Maybe it will help relieve some of the pain and I will finally be able to move on with my life. That’s why I started this right. To help myself heal. I need to let some of this go.
Kira looked at what she had written so far. Was that really us? Were we really that happy? The memories continued to flood her mind and she began typing away.
***********************
“We need pictures.” Morgan said suddenly.
“Huh? Pictures? Of what?”
“Us silly.” Morgan smiled. “I want pictures of the two of us. Before you leave to go home. Is that ok?”
Kira laughed. “Sure! I’d like that too.” She put her arms around Morgan and pulled her in close for a big hug. “I’d like that very much. As long as I get copies to bring home with me.”
“Well of course you get copies.” Morgan’s tone grew serious. “I don’t ever want to forget this week. You’ve made me so happy. I didn’t think I could ever feel like this again.”
“I know what you mean. I’ve never felt this way for anyone. I can’t believe I’ve lived this long and never truly known what it was like to love and be loved.” Kira smiled. “Thank you for giving me this.”
Morgan pulled back and stared at Kira. “I…I don’t know what to say.”
“You don’t have to say anything…..Just keep loving me.” Kira replied.
Morgan was stunned. How did I get so lucky? How can I tell her how much she’s come to mean to me in these short few days. I wish I was better at revealing my feelings. She sighed.
“What’s wrong?” Kira’s concerned voice broke through Morgan’s jumbled thoughts.
“Nothing’s wrong hon. I was just……” Morgan struggled for the right words. “I just don’t know the right words to say to tell you how I feel. I’m….I’m not good with words like you are.” Morgan pulled away and looked at the floor.
Kira walked over and put her hand on Morgan’s shoulder, tugging a little to get her to turn around and face her. Morgan did so slowly but kept her eyes on the floor.
“Morgan…..look at me.” Kira said quietly.
Morgan didn’t move. She kept her gaze locked firmly on the floor.
“Morgan…please?” Kira moved her hands until they were caressing Morgan’s face. “Look at me.” It wasn’t a question anymore.
“Look into my eyes.”
“What?” Morgan asked with a slight hesitation to her voice.
“Look into my eyes Morgan. Tell me what you see. Be honest.”
Morgan felt herself looking deep into Kira’s eyes. “I see……honesty.”
“What else do you see Morgan?” Kira’s voice was soft.
Morgan‘s eyes searched deep. “I see….” Morgan couldn’t deny what she saw plainly written in those twin emerald eyes. “I see …..love.”
“Do you think I see anything different in your eyes?” Kira responded gently. “You don’t have to say anything. I see it all in your beautiful eyes. I may be good with words hon, but the eyes never lie. Please don’t ever worry about finding the right words…..just don’t ever let that look fade from those eyes ok?”
Morgan was swept away. “Ok.” She leaned in and kissed the golden haired wonder before her. “Tell me…what did I do to get so lucky? I’m not the best person in the world so how is it that the powers that be have blessed me…..blessed me with you.”
Kira couldn’t help herself. She laughed. “And you say I’m good with words. Oh honey you just said all I would ever need to hear and then some.”
Morgan blushed. “I did? Yeah well….don’t tell anyone. I wouldn’t want my reputation ruined ya know.”
Kira kissed her soundly. “Your secret’s safe with me….you big mushball!”
Morgan groaned playfully. “I am NOT a mushball nor have I ever been a mushball!” She smiled. “Now what were we talking about? Oh yeah! Pictures.”
**************************
Gods it was all so simple then. Intense yes…..but we liked it that way. It was bright and beautiful and neither one of us wanted to let go of it. Not then anyway.
Kira smiled a bit at that memory. She remembered the look on Morgan’s face that day. It was like her whole world had taken a turn for the better. I know mine did.
Another memory surfaced. Kira grinned to herself. I still can’t believe that’s how I told my mother….
**************************
Kira’s cell phone rang and she looked at the caller ID. It was her mother. Oh God! What am I going to tell her? I didn’t even tell her I was leaving…how am I going to explain to her where I am and who I am with?
“Oh my God…Morgan!” Kira exclaimed. She felt like passing out.
Morgan rushed over to Kira. All of the color had drained from Kira’s face and she stood there holding her ringing cell phone. “What is it!? What’s wrong?”
Kira stared at her phone. “It’s my mother. I….I didn’t tell her I was leaving to come here.” Kira’s face turned even whiter. “She….I….Morgan…I haven’t told her that I…..”
Morgan understood immediately. “You haven’t come out to her yet have you?”
“No. I haven’t. I told you…this is all still new to me….Oh Gods…..”
“You ok?”
Kira didn’t answer her. She hit the send button on the phone and accepted the call.
“Hi mom!” Kira threw Morgan a look. She mouthed the words ‘here we go’.
“Hi yourself stranger.” her mom replied. “How are you?”
Kira giggled. “I’m fine mom, just fine. How are you?” Her hands were shaking. I can do this.
“I’m fine. A little worried about you….I’ve been trying to call you. Where are you?”
Kira giggled again. She was nervous as hell. “Well mom….I’m not at home.”
Kira’s mom knew something was up. “Where are you then?”
She shot Morgan a grin. “I’m in Indiana mom.” she said simply. Ok we’ve gotten that far.
“You’re where???!!!” Kira’s mom exploded. “What the hell are you doing in Indiana?”
Kira took a deep breath. “I’m visiting someone.”
“Someone? Who? Don’t tell me it’s someone you’ve been talking to on the internet?”
Damn she knows me too well. “Well actually yeah it is someone I’ve talked to on the net.”
“Well what’s his name? You’re gonna tell me that much aren’t you? And whatever possessed you to drive almost halfway across the country to meet him?? Are you out of your mind?” Kira’s mom demanded.
Kira started getting angry. “I’m not at a guy’s house.” She took a deep breath and stole another quick glance at Morgan. She was standing in the hallway. She saw Kira look her way and realized that Kira was about to tell her mother where she was and why. She quickly started shaking her head from side to side mouthing no…no. Kira ignored her completely. She gathered herself and took another deep breath. “I’m at my girlfriend’s mom.”
Morgan spun around. She was practically shouting. “I can’t believe you just said that. Oh my God! Are you crazy?”
Kira laughed quietly. There was silence on the other end of the phone. “Mom? You still there?”
“Yeah I’m still here.” A sigh. “I figured it was something like that. A girlfriend huh?”
“Yeah mom, a girlfriend.” Kira replied.
“Well when are you coming home?” her mom said quietly. “I think we will need to talk when you get back.”
“What will we need to talk about mom?” Kira asked nervously. Her stomach had started doing flip flops.
“We’ll discuss it when you get home…which is going to be when???”
Morgan heard the tone of Kira’s voice change. Oh oh. There’s gonna be trouble for her when she gets back. Damn! I don’t want to cause her any problems.
Kira‘s temper flared. “Let’s discuss it now Mother. Whatever it is I want to know about it now.”
“It’s not that big of a deal. It can wait until you’re back.”
God damn it! I hate it when she does this!!! “Mother! Why wait? Let’s just get it out of the way now. I’m nuts for coming down here right? I’m not supposed to get in my truck and drive so far from home right? I’m not an adult…at least not in your eyes….so God forbid I should take control of MY life. If you’re gonna bitch I’d rather you do it now and get it over with!”
“I wasn’t going to bitch. I’m just worried about you is all. You’re a long way from home. What if something happens? You don’t really know this woman do you? I mean how long have you two been talking?”
“Long enough for me to have made the decision to come down here mom…..It‘s all good….” Kira replied curtly.
“I’m not mad about her being a woman…I’m just….concerned that’s all.”
Kira sighed as she suddenly realized why her mom sounded so upset. ”You’re worried that I’ll want to move down here aren’t you?”
Silence. Guess I was right on the money with that one.
“Mom…..Her and I just met. I’m not moving anywhere.” Another sigh escaped. “We’ll talk about it more when I get home.”
“Ok….when are you coming home?”
Kira looked at Morgan. Maybe never. “I don’t know. The end of the week more than likely. I’ll call you and let you know ok?”
“Ok. Be careful.” Kira’s mom said sadly.
“Mom, I’ll be fine. It’s ok…really. I’ll talk to you later this week.”
“Ok….I love you.”
“Love you too Mom. Bye.”
“Bye”
Kira sighed again. Am I ever glad that’s over with!
Morgan charged into the room. “I can’t believe you just did that!!!! You just came out to your mother standing in my kitchen!!! Oh my God!!!!”
Kira started laughing. The tension she’d been feeling drained away as she watched Morgan nervously prance around the kitchen.
“C’mere you.”
Morgan wandered over and stood in front of Kira and waited for whatever was coming next.
“I need a hug.” Kira said simply.
“I’d be most happy to oblige.” And with that, she pulled Kira into a tight embrace. “I still can’t believe you did that.” she said with a small amount of wonder in her voice.
Kira wrapped her arms around Morgan’s body. “I can’t believe I did it either, but I’m glad I did. This way I’m not hiding it….and I didn’t have to do it in person.” She laughed again.
Morgan turned serious. “Is….Is she ok with it?”
“What? With my being gay…or being here in Indiana with you?” Kira smiled.
“Either one….both.” Morgan said. “Take your pick.”
“Well let’s just say she’s ok with the whole my being a lesbian thing. Hell, my whole family knew I was before I ever admitted it to myself….so that’s the ok part.” Kira’s look turned sad. “But I think she’s a little worried that I’m down here…..and that…..”
“And what?” Morgan wanted to know.
“Well I think she’s afraid you might steal her little girl away from her.” Kira replied honestly. “And you know something….she’s right to be afraid.”
*******************************
Yup. Mom had every right to be afraid. That’s just what Morgan had done. In such a short time she stole my heart, my mind and my soul. Part of me would give anything to have them back….
Kira stopped typing for a moment to give her fingers…and her heart a break. Gods this is too much for me. How come I can’t stop loving you Morgan? What is this hold you have on me? Let me go…please.
