MY SOUL TO KEEP

My heart in pieces at my feet

I prayed the Lord my soul to keep

The prayer unanswered, I found a way

To keep my lonely heart at bay

By shutting down, I cried no more

I lived my life as I had before

The wishing never seemed to end

But looking out I had no friend

And now you're back with open arms

Beguiling me with all your charms

How can I learn to trust once more

When in the past you closed the door

So much time has come and gone

So much time spent all alone

Am I the friend you come to find

With an open heart and mind

I can only wait and see

If what we want will come to be

And if this hope shall come to pass

I pray dear Lord that it will last
