MORE THAN FRIENDS

Part 1

The day started much like every other day had. It was hot and the road nothing but dust. The cute little blond and her tall dark haired friend were returning home after traveling for what seemed like forever. They had been on the move, had been through tautarus and back and were just plain worn out. It had been quite an adventure for the pair. Both woman were a bit nervous about returning home as they knew they would be getting an earful from their families and friends for being gone so long and for not sending word of their welfare. As they made their way home, each was lost in their own thoughts.

The small blonde broke the silence “Xena?”

“Yeah Gabrielle?”

“How much trouble do you think we’re gonna be in when we get home?” the bard asked with not a small amount of curious fear in her voice.

“If I know my mom, quite a bit...why?” the warrior said with a wry grin.

“Just wondering....” the blonde replied.

“Don’t worry Gabrielle, everything will be fine. They’ll shout and holler for a bit then welcome us home with open arms. It won’t be as bad as you think.” Xena secretly hoped she was right. When her and Gabrielle had left, they had done so without much warning and hadn’t had the time to send word on how they were faring. Not to mention the fact that they’d been gone nearly a year. Cyrene was known for her temper and Xena was hoping she didn’t make use of it when they did make it back to Amphipolis.

Gabrielle’s voice broke into Xena’s thoughts “Xena? Um, how do you think your mom will take the news....you know....about us?”

Xena grinned, “That, my bard, may just be our saving grace.”

Silence fell once again as they plodded along, both of them once again lost inside their thoughts. They were going home and so many changes. Neither of them was the same person they had been when they left. Would they find acceptance when they returned?

A year ago......

Everything was great in Amphipolis. Xena and Gabrielle had been there for about 6 moons, enjoying some time away from the road and from trouble. The little bard had such a knack for getting into just that. From the time Xena had met the young girl it was one thing after another. Xena couldn’t keep track of how many times Gabrielle had been held at knifepoint, kidnapped, or in some other type of dangerous situation. Xena shook her head in disbelief. Why had Gabrielle stayed with her? After all they’d seen, done, and experienced. There had been some pretty rough times in there as well where both of them had come close to giving up on each other, yet there they were in Amphipolis, together and still the best of friends. Xena was troubled though. Her thoughts, when thinking of the bard, had lately been anything but on a ‘friendly’ nature. Xena found herself constantly thinking of the bard as more of a friend. She watched Gabrielle constantly as she moved through the town, running errands, or simply just writing on her scrolls. Her ice blue eyes following every move the bard made. And to make matters worse, the littlest things the bard did lately made her smile. I don’t get goofy smiles Xena thought to herself. I don’t smile much at all, except where Gabrielle is concerned. What in the name of all the Gods is wrong with me?

Little did Xena know that Gabrielle was having the same thoughts run through her mind. Gabrielle would watch as Xena ran through drills, keeping herself in shape for the day they might return to the road. Watching the fluid motions of Xena’s well-defined body move through sword drills or flying through the air doing lazy flips and spins. As Gabrielle watched she realized.....I want more of her.....more?

*************************************************************************************

The messenger rode in hard and fast. He stopped abruptly in front of the inn Cyrene owned and operated. He practically fell off his horse in his haste to find the person he was looking for. Xena’s keen hearing had told her he was coming and as he dismounted she appeared in the doorway, a concerned look on her face.

“Are you Xena? If not, can you please tell me where I can find her? I’ve come a long way and I need to speak with her...it’s URGENT!” the young man rambled.

The warrior replied, “I’m Xena. What do you want?”

“We’ve been attacked,” he gushed. “A warlord going by the name Cycleus invaded our town and is now moving on to the next. He promised to vanquish everything in his path including Amphipolis. I came to warn you. Tell your....”

“Whoa! Slow down!” Xena warned. “Come in and sit down and you can tell me what’s going on.”

Gabrielle’s blonde head peeked out of the doorway. “Did I hear him say something about a warlord attacking...?”

“Gabrielle....Go tell mother that we’ll be having a guest for dinner. He needs to get himself settled and then we’ll both hear what he has to say.”

Gabrielle turned to do as requested as Xena pointed to the stables. “You can put your horse up in there. Come back once you’ve taken care of your animal and we’ll talk.”

The young man shouted, “I don’t have time for that! Others must be warned! I’ve got to......”

Xena cut him off with an icy stare from clear blue eyes, “If you want my help then do what I tell you. Take care of your horse....then we’ll talk. Go!”

Reluctantly, the young man did as he was commanded. When he returned to the inn a short time later he found Xena and Gabrielle sitting at a back table waiting for him. Gabrielle saw him enter and motioned for him to join them. Nudging her friend she grinned, “Now be nice!” Xena rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Gabrielle, this guy rides in here like the Furies are chasing him down, yells something about a warlord coming for Amphipolis, and you want me to be nice? I don’t have the time nor the patience for being nice!”

Gabrielle had no time to reply for the young man was now at their table and sitting himself down. Once he was settled Xena drawled, “OK, now you want to tell me what in Hades is going on? You mentioned a warlord?” She shot Gabrielle a look that said ok is that nice enough for you?

Gabrielle jumped in, “Why don’t you start with your name?”

The young man replied “My name is Dionclyenus. I come from Pheperon. We were attacked about a week ago by the warlord Cycleus. He and his army rode and destroyed everything in their path. Nothing’s left....Nothing! It’s all gone....”

Xena’s neck hairs prickled. Something was not quite right about the man. She couldn’t put her finger on it yet, but she was sure everything would make itself known shortly.

Xena broke out of her reverie in time to hear Gabrielle ask what had happened.

“When they first arrived, they came in small groups. Not more than five or six at a time. Before we knew what had hit us, his entire army was there, setting fires....killing.” The young man laid his weary head in his hands. “I didn’t know what to do, so I ran! Grabbed the first horse I could find and.....:”

Xena interrupted his tale, “Didn’t any of them follow you?”

“I don’t know. I just ran and never looked back.” He looked ashamed. “I don’t even know if any of my family is still alive! Once I calmed down I realized that I had to warn others. I started with the first town and have been traveling ever since.”

Now Xena knew what was bothering her. The man was LYING. How had that escaped her? Maybe she’d been idle for to long .....

“As I traveled, people told me about a warrior who could stop Cycleus.....they told me where I could find you so here I am.”

“I have a question for you Dionclyenus. “ Xena’s voice now dripping with sarcasm “If you ran after the attack started, then how could you possibly know they won’t stop, that they are headed here?”

Dionclyenus swallowed nervously, “um.....”

Xena sprung with cat like quickness out of her chair and before anyone could blink, she had the man by the throat and was holding him tightly against the wall, an evil look on her face. “If you want to live to see the next few minutes...start talking......the truth.”

“ok...ok.....” He couldn’t breathe. Gods this woman was strong. They hadn’t warned him about everything in regards to Xena had they?

Fear ran rampant through the man. He could tell her what he knew and risk death later......or he could tell her nothing and die now. For him the choice was an easy one.

“I’ll tell you everything. Please“ he gasped “please....just let go.”

Xena moved so that her face was just inches away from Dioncylenus’ “I’ll let go when I hear you answer my question. Who are you and who sent you here?”

A few moments passed, Xena‘s grip on Dioncylenus‘ throat tightened. “I‘m waiting“ she sneered. She could tell the man was terrified, she could feel his ragged breathing against her face. She wished he would hurry up and start talking....his breath stank. As if on cue the man began speaking “My name is really Dioncylenus. And I AM from Pheperon” he managed to choke out. Xena’s grip lessened slightly. “My town was attacked..... .” “Keep talking!” Xena demanded. The man looked stricken, “You’re never going to believe me....”

“Try me.” Xena growled.

“We were attacked. I can’t say by what. It was chaos. Things flying, people screaming.....” The man was clearly frightened by something that had happened to him. Xena’s grip loosened a bit more. “Yeah....and?” she asked.

Gabrielle got up from the table and laid a warm hand on Xena’s arm. “Xena......”

Xena’s attention focused on Gabrielle for a moment. Their eyes met and she knew what the bard wanted. She turned her gaze back to Dioncylenus. “I’m going to let you go. You’re going to sit down and tell us what happened from the beginning. One wrong move and you’re a dead man. You got that?!”

Dioncylenus nodded. Xena let the man go and they returned to their places at the table. Gabrielle prompted the man to speak, “Things were flying.......people screaming.....what happened?

“We were working in the fields when the first screams were heard. We had no idea what was happening.”

“We?” Gabrielle asked.

“My friends and I. We heard the screaming and took off for town. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we got there. People were running around....looking like they were being attacked, but there was NOTHING there!!! Nothing! Things moved on their own. A pitchfork was chasing a woman down the road that leads through town.” His eyes dropped. “It got her. There was nothing anyone could do. We couldn’t fight it.” Frustration and desperation crept into his voice, “There was nothing there to fight!!”

Xena shot a glance at Gabrielle. The bard was completely involved in the man’s story. Xena rolled her eyes and turned her attention back to Dioncylenus.

“We didn’t know what to do. Most of my friends ran to find their families.” He hung his head in shame. “I ran.” He looked up at Xena. He could see she wasn’t buying the story. “I told you......you wouldn’t believe me.”

Gabrielle saved the man from the coarse reply she knew would be coming “Well...it is kind of hard to believe. I mean.....a pitchfork.....??”

“I am telling you the truth!!! It happened!!! I haven’t told you the worst of it.” He looked at both of them. “There were voices.”

Xena was getting a bit impatient now. Voices. I think this guy has been out in the sun too long.

“What did the voices say?” Gabrielle wanted to know. The little bard was on the edge of her seat now, listening attentively.

Xena lost herself in thought. He’s not lying anymore. He’s telling the truth. What exactly did he see? She decided to pay closer attention.

“The voices were....Gods I know how this sounds.... but they were looking for you Xena. They kept calling your name. Over and over we heard it. Xena. Xena. Xena. It seemed the longer it took for them to ...look for you I guess is the right word...the more horrific the attacks became. I found a horse, climbed on , and ran for my life.”

Xena leaned forward in her chair, resting her elbows on the table. He’s still leaving something out she thought.

It was as if he could read her mind. “There’s more.” His eyes lowered.

“What? Spit it out.” Xena snarled.

Startled, he looked at Xena, “I was stopped heading out of town.”

“What do you mean stopped? Who stopped you?”

“I don’t know” he wailed. “I was riding all out and suddenly the horse just stopped. I couldn’t get him to move. I even got off and tried to pull him along....he wasn’t moving.”

“Let me guess....you heard a voice?” Xena asked with disdain.

Dioncylenus answered simply “Yes.”

“What did the voice say to you?” Gabrielle asked curiously.

Suddenly, Dioncylenus’ face went blank...his eyes rolling back into his head. He opened his mouth to speak but it wasn’t his voice the two women heard.

Xena and Gabrielle looked at each other in shock. What in Hades was going on here?

“Xena! We have found you at last. You are in great danger. You must leave Amphipolis at once. Do not take time to tell of your leaving. Go! NOW!”

“Where am I supposed to go?” She asked.

She received no answer. Dioncylenus slumped in his chair as if exhausted his eyes closed. He peered up at Xena and Gabrielle. “What just happened?”

“What’s the last thing you remember saying?” Xena demanded.

“I was going to tell you about the voices I heard leaving town.....” he began in bewilderment.

“Finish it up. I haven’t got all day” Xena snapped. Gabrielle had a worried look on her face. She looked over at Xena and what she saw stopped her cold. Xena seemed.....afraid.

“The voices told me to find you and to give you a message. They said that they had waited long enough for you and weren’t going to wait any longer. They said they were coming and would never rest until you became one with them. That’s all I know. They warned me you were very dangerous but to deliver the message. They would kill me if I didn’t.”

Xena scowled. “You’ve delivered your message. Now get out!” Dionclyenus didn’t wait to be told twice. He scrambled out of his chair and ran out the door.

Once outside Dionclyenus stood for a moment, a blank look crossing his hard features. “It is done masters. What else do you require of me?” He cocked his head as if listening to someone speak. He headed toward the stables, retrieved his horse, and rode out of town.

Back inside the inn, Xena sat motionless at the table. Gabrielle reached over and touched Xena’s hand. “Xena? Are you alright?” Xena stared into space a moment longer. Suddenly she jerked upright. “Gabrielle, get our things together. We leave within a candlemark. Tell no one we are leaving.”

“Xena? I don’t understand. What is it?”

Xena took a long hard look at her friend. “I can’t explain right now. You’re just going to have to trust me. Get our things. Be quick.” She reached out and gave Gabrielle’s shoulder a little pat, unsure of who she was trying to make more comfortable, the bard or herself. “Meet me in the stables once you’ve gotten everything ready. I’m going to get some supplies.”

Whatever was bothering Xena, she wasn’t quite ready to share it with the bard. Reluctantly, Gabrielle headed for the door. She cast one more look in Xena’s direction. Xena met her gaze with a heavy sigh. “Gabrielle, please, go do what I asked.” Gabrielle turned and walked out the door.

Xena sat a moment longer. I can’t risk her in this. Not this time.

She rose quickly and headed for the kitchen. Cyrene was busy, leaning over a pot of stew, adding a few tasty bits here and there. Xena stared at her, drinking in the site. Would she ever have this chance again? It seemed a simple moment, but one Xena would remember in the months ahead. Cyrene looked up from her boiling pot. “Don’t tell me. Gabrielle is hungry. How can that girl stay so thin the way she eats,” she stated jokingly. Then she caught the look on Xena’s face. She hurried over to her daughter. “Xena? What is it?”

“I have to leave mother,” Xena stated matter of factly. “and I want Gabrielle to stay here with you.” This wasn’t as easy as it should be. She was doing this for the bard’s own good. If so, then why did she feel so damn guilty about doing it?

“You’re leaving Gabrielle here?” Cyrene asked incredulously . “Maybe you better tell me what’s going on before you drop a line like that.”

“I would like to.....but I can’t. I just can’t. What I’m heading for.....well it won’t be pleasant. I don’t want Gabrielle involved in it. She’s been through enough!”

Cyrene regarded Xena carefully, “You really care for her don’t you Xena?”

“Yes Mother, I do.”

“And you think that by leaving her here you’re saving her from what? Pain? Suffering? Hasn’t she had that from being with you already and yet she’s still here with you! What makes this time any different from any other? If you want my opinion, dear daughter, I think it’s one of the worst decisions you could be making.” She stated vehemently.

Xena sighed. A deep weight settling itself around her heart. Still she had to do it. “I want her safe. Please don’t give me a hard time about this. She can stay here?”

Cyrene gave her daughter a long drawn out look. “Of course she can stay here Xena, but I can’t promise you I’ll keep her here. You know damn well that once she realizes you’ve left her behind, she’s going to be angry with you, but not angry enough not to want to follow you.”

Xena knew her mother was right. Gabrielle would follow her. Damn it! Why can’t things ever be easy?

Cyrene continued, “Which would you be more worried about Xena. Gabrielle with you in whatever it is you are facing, or alone out there looking for you? Think about it!”

Her mother was right again. Whether she liked it or not the bard was in danger regardless of where she was. Why did her mother have to make such good sense? “Ok Mother,” Xena grudgingly admitted. “You made your point. Can you get enough supplies together for two?” Cyrene grinned. “That’s my girl. Now that we’ve gotten that cleared up, you going to tell me what is going on?” It was obvious that something had her daughter caught off guard. Off guard enough to the point she wasn’t thinking clearly. That was DEFINITELY not her daughter.

“Mother, I told you .....” Cyrene waved her off. “I know, I know. You can’t tell me. Go get ready. Your supplies will be ready when you are.”

Xena let a small smile creep onto her face. “Thanks Mom,” she said quietly. She gave her mother a quick hug. Cyrene returned the hug with a bit of wonder. “You’re welcome Xena.” Without another word, Xena turned and quickly left the room. Cyrene was really worried now. Whatever her daughter was going to face must be.......Cyrene didn’t finish the thought. She turned and started getting the supplies that her daughter and best friend would need for their journey.

*************************************************************************************

Xena headed for the stables. She needed to get Argo ready and to find a good horse for Gabrielle. The bard wasn’t going to like it, but she would need to ride this time. Xena knew there would be some arguments......Oh well....wouldn’t be the first time. When she arrived at the stables, Argo tossed her head at her as if greeting the tall warrior. “Hey Argo. Miss me?” the warrior asked the horse. Xena looked over the other horses in the stable. A small yet sturdy brown mare caught her attention. Yeah....that one she thought. She brought the horse over and began to get her and Argo ready for the trip.

Not much time had passed when she heard footsteps approaching the stable doors. Xena didn’t look up. She already knew who it was. Gabrielle entered the stable, her arms full of the gear and weapons they would need. She carefully set her burdens down and surveyed the surroundings. It didn’t take her long to notice there were two horses saddled and ready to ride.

“Um Xena......”

“Yeah?”

“Why do you have TWO horses ready to go? Oh I know...one is for supplies?” the little blonde asked hopefully.

“No, the other one is for you. You need to ride this time Gabrielle. No arguments ok?”

“But Xena.....You know I don’t like to.....”

Xena cut her off. “You need to ride. That’s all there is to it. You have everything ready?” she snapped.

Gabrielle, slightly taken back by Xena’s tone, nodded.

Gabrielle waited while Xena finished making the final adjustments to Argo’s tack. She turned, facing the young girl. She drank in the site......knowing that what she was about to say would hurt the bard, but she had to give it one last shot. “Gabrielle. We need to talk.”

“Ok.....?” The bard was a little unsure of what was coming.

“I don’t know how to say this without hurting you Gabrielle so I’m just going to say it. I would like you to stay here with Mother this time.”

Gabrielle’s face dropped....and then flushed with anger. “WHAT!!! You want to me to do what? Stay here? Are you out of your mind?” she ranted, green eyes flashing. “No way Xena! I’m going with you and that’s all there is to it!”

Xena let the girl vent.

“How can you even think of asking me to stay here? After all we’ve been through together? You know damn well I can handle myself out there and yet you have the nerve.......” As she ranted, she paced in front of the warrior. “Nope, no way you’re going to convince me to hang around here while you’re out there...alone. I’m your friend Xena.” She came to a stop in front of the warrior pointing her finger at her. “Like it or not, you’re stuck with me!!!”

They stood that way for a moment, just staring at each other. Suddenly, Xena reached out, wrapped her arms around the small bard and gave her a hug. Gabrielle was too shocked to say anything else. She simply put her arms around Xena and returned the gesture. They stayed that way for a long time, holding each other, neither of them wanting to break the contact. Xena sighed and reluctantly let the bard go. She put her hands on Gabrielle’s shoulders. “Please listen to me. You don’t want to follow me this time Gabrielle. What I’m headed for.....I may not come back and you‘re too important to me......I couldn‘t live with myself if something happened to you!”

“Might not come back? Gabrielle interrupted. “All the more reason I should go with you Xena. Whatever it is you‘re facing I‘ll face it with you.” she said gently. “You‘re my best friend! I can‘t lose you. I won‘t lose you!”

Xena wasn’t sure if she was relieved or still upset by the fact that the bard insisted on going with her. She came to terms with the fact that this was one argument she just wasn’t going to win. She pulled Gabrielle close for another hug. “Ok Gabrielle.” she whispered. “I’m glad you’re coming with me.” Gabrielle gave the warrior a gentle squeeze. “And I’m glad you’ve come to your senses.”

Xena didn’t want to move, she wanted to freeze this moment and hold it close to her heart forever. Another big sigh left the warrior. They had to get moving. “Alright! Enough of the mushy stuff!” She let the bard go. “We’ve got to get going. Mother should have the supplies ready by now. Let’s get this gear stowed and get out of here.”

“Right!” the bard replied. She eyed the horse she was supposed to ride with a good amount of suspicion. She actually wants me to ride this thing the bard thought to herself. I think I’m already in trouble and we haven’t even left yet.

“C’mon Gabrielle. Let’s go!”

“Right behind you Xena!” She quickly stowed her gear, grabbed the horses reins, and headed out the door.

Xena and Gabrielle headed to the inn to collect their supplies. Cyrene was waiting for them on the porch with a large bundle. “Here you go kids. This should be enough to keep even the bard happy and full for some time” she said focusing on Gabrielle with a large smile. Gabrielle felt the heat rise from her neck all the way to her ears. “All kidding aside.....Xena, I know you’re heading into something pretty serious. I just.....well.....take care of yourself. Drop word now and then and let me know how you two are doing. We’ll see each other again soon.”

Xena didn’t know quite what to say. She wasn’t very good at the emotional stuff and even worse at long drawn out goodbyes. She decided to keep it simple. “Thanks Mom....for everything.”

Xena turned to Gabrielle. “You ready?”

“Yep. Let’s get this show on the road.” Gabrielle responded with a grin.

The pair mounted their horses and with a last look at Cyrene and a wave, they headed for the road that would take them out of Amphipolis.

*************************************************************************************

They were finally on the road. Gabrielle had no idea where they were going. Every time she opened her mouth to ask Xena about what was going on, something about the look on the warrior’s face stopped her. Xena’s eyebrows were burrowed down and the look of concentration on her face was something that Gabrielle didn’t want to interrupt. She hadn’t seen the warrior this into herself for a very long time. What could be bothering her so much that she won’t talk to me about it? And why didn’t she want me to go with her?

After riding in silence for a bit longer, curiosity finally overtook the bard. “Xena......?”

Xena wasn’t really paying attention to the road. Her mind drifted back to a time when she had been alone. Before Hercules had saved her.....before Gabrielle. Her army had turned on her and she was filled with hate. She wanted revenge on all those who had hurt her, betrayed her. She would do anything to make sure each one of them paid.....Anything.......

A voice quietly broke into Xena’s intense thoughts. “Xena.......”

“What Gabrielle?” she responded with a touch of annoyance tinting her voice.

Now that was a surprise. Xena didn’t hear me the first time. What in Hades was happening to her friend? “I was wondering....can you tell me what is going on now? You’ve been pretty mysterious about the whole thing. If it’s as dangerous as you say, shouldn’t I know a little about what might happen?”

“Gabrielle.....I want to tell you......I .....I need some time to think about this.”

Gabrielle knew not to push the issue. “When you’re ready, I’m here.”

That finally drew a small smile from the serious face of her friend. “I know Gabrielle. Thanks.”

They rode in silence the rest of the day, stopping only once at midday to rest the horses and to grab a bite to eat. When the sun had almost set.....Xena finally pulled off the road and found a little, well secluded area for them to spend the night in. Gabrielle gratefully pulled herself out of the saddle, stretching the kinks out of sore leg muscles. “Gods, it feels good to have my feet on the ground” she mumbled as she began getting the things out of her saddlebags she’d need to make camp.

Xena still deep in thought, was wondering how much to tell the bard. She knew she had to tell her something. How will she react when I tell her about this? She knows I’ve got a dark past....but does she realize just how bad it’s been? Doubt crept into Xena’s heart. Will she want to stay when I tell her what I’ve done? Even Gabrielle’s patience with me has to have an end. Doesn’t it? Can I bear to lose her because of it? So many questions with no answers. Xena knew only one thing. She had to tell the bard what she was getting into. It wasn’t fair to keep this from her. She had to give the bard a chance to choose. Leave or stay. Again.

With that decision made, Xena finished taking care of the horses just as Gabrielle finished setting up the camp. Xena surveyed the site. Gabrielle never ceased to amaze her. Everything was done and in place. A fire was already going, their bedrolls neatly laid out. Xena smelled food cooking. She sat down near the fire and stared into the flames. She took a deep breath.

“Gabrielle......C’mere.” Xena patted the ground next to her. “We need to.....I have something I have to tell you.”

Gabrielle sat down next to the warrior. “This has to do with why we left Amphipolis doesn’t it?”

“Yes it does.” Xena stared down at her hands. “I don’t know if you’re going to like what you’re about to hear, but you need to know what you’re in for if you decide to stay.”

Gabrielle stated vehemently, “Xena! We’ve already talked about this. I’m not going....”

Xena interrupted the bard, “Please Gabrielle! Just listen ok?” Gods, this was going to be difficult. “It was a long time ago.....before I met Hercules.” She looked up and smiled at Gabrielle laying a gentle hand on Gabrielle’s cheek, “Before I met you.”

Xena was angry. More angry than she had ever been in her life. She wasn’t thinking clearly and she didn’t care one way or the other. How dare they betray her that way! She wanted revenge and she wanted it now. It was all she thought about...She wandered aimlessly throughout the wilderness with no real goal...no real purpose. The hate grew in her like a cancer day after painful day. It consumed her every waking moment. Her thoughts churning....thinking up ways to kill each and every person who had ever hurt her......or betrayed her. Her dreams were filled with dark visions of the past. Each face taunting her...mocking her. It was driving her mad.

Then one day.....the voices came....

Gabrielle broke in, “You heard voices? What did they say?”

“Just listen Gabrielle and I’ll tell you. It won’t be pleasant. You sure you want to hear this?”

Gabrielle looked at her friend with total trust. “Whatever it was, it’s in the past. I won’t think any less of you regardless of what you’re about to tell me.”

Xena drew in a deep breath letting it out in a huge sigh. She wasn’t so sure about that.

She continued her story.....

They told her they could help her......help her get revenge on those she hated. Xena, in her madness, believed every word. Even in her current state of mind, she knew that they would want something in return. She knew damn well you didn’t get something for nothing. She didn‘t care, she knew what she wanted, so desperately needed. “Give me my vengeance!” she had screamed into the seemingly empty air.

”We will help you gain what you seek. We have no need of you now. Your time will come. Be ready when you are called upon. Do not think you can escape us Xena. We will find you and destroy you if you do not heed our call.. Do you still want our help?” the voices taunted.

Xena didn’t even think twice. “I’m yours! Whenever and however you want.” She replied a determined look on her face.

“Very well. It is done. You can find the people you seek.....” The voices proceeded to give locations for the people Xena believed had betrayed her. She listened carefully, committing each place and name into memory. “When you find them, you will be able to do what you will with them. No one will hinder your progress. Go now and find your vengeance, but remember one thing Xena....You now belong to us.” Then they were gone.

Xena stood alone. She now had a purpose. She knew what had to be done. So she left the woods and went to take care of business.

Gabrielle sat with a thoughtful look on her face. “You went to find them didn’t you Xena? You went and killed them all.” she said with sadness in her voice.

Xena stared long and hard at Gabrielle before she answered quietly, “Yes Gabrielle. I did. What I did to them......It was unspeakable.” She stared back into the fire. “The voices were right. I was able to do what I wanted to them. Not a living soul tried to stop me. I lived out every single nightmarish torture I could conjure up.” Her voice cracked and a tear found it‘s way down Xena‘s cheek.

Gabrielle had to admit what she was hearing shocked her but she could also see this was tearing her friend apart. “Listen to me Xena....” She gently slid an arm around her friend and held her. “You’re not that person anymore. You’ve spent the last few years of your life making up for all the wrong done in your past.”

“Gabrielle, how can I ever make up for what I did to those people?” Xena spat out as she pulled away from Gabrielle. “And now....those voices are back. They are looking for me. They want me to repay the debt I owe them.” Xena looked defeated. She had thought long and hard about what she was about to say next. “That’s why I don’t want you involved Gabrielle. I owe them and I can’t think of a way to get out of it. I have no idea what’s going to happen and I won’t risk you....I can’t....I just can’t.”

Gabrielle saw the emotion practically pouring off her friend. “Xena, how can you be so sure it’s the same voices looking for you when we have no proof?”

“I’m sure Gabrielle. I’m sure. They told me I would know. It’s them alright.”

“So then the voice that came from Dionclyenus was one of them?” the bard asked.

A spark lit Xena’s eyes. That was the strange things about all of this. That voice....It wasn’t one of THEM. “I honestly don’t know what that was Gabrielle.” she admitted.

The pair sat in silence for a few moments each lost in their own thoughts. Well it’s now or never Xena. Ask her.

“Gabrielle I told you all this to give you a choice. You don’t have to stay. I don’t expect you to....”

Gabrielle gave it some thought. Xena was right. It was probably going to be a very dangerous endeavor getting her free and clear of this so called debt. It seemed like it might be an impossible task but I’m her friend. I know she’d do the same for me.....in a heartbeat. She says she can’t lose me. Well Xena I can’t lose you either.

Gabrielle pulled Xena‘s face gently her way once more. “Xena.....I’m not going to let you do this alone. I’m with you all the way, no matter what happens.” Xena opened her mouth and tried to speak. Gabrielle laid her fingers over Xena’s mouth. “No.....” She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. “You can’t talk me out of it. You told me I had a choice. I’ve made it. I’m staying!”

Xena reached up and took Gabrielle’s hand away from her face. “Are you sure....”

“I’ve never been more sure of anything.” Gabrielle suddenly felt brave. “You need me and you know it Xena. I’m not leaving you. Not now....not ever. You got that!” Gabrielle smiled through the tears now streaming down her soft face.

Xena smiled back at her bard through tears of her own. “Yeah I got it.” She looked over at the fire. Her grin widened and she pointed toward the flames. “Um...now what’s for dinner?”

Gabrielle looked at Xena and then at what she was pointing at. What she saw had her scrambling for the now boiling over pot. She scowled when she saw what was left of it’s contents. “Berries and some bread ok for dinner?” She asked sheepishly.

To Xena it sounded like it would be the best dinner, not to mention the sweetest, of her life.

*************************************************************************************

Xena had been setting a harsh pace. They rose before the sun, quickly packed their gear, and headed out. They would stop at midday for a quick meal and to rest the horses, then would head out again, not stopping until near sunset. Xena still had not told Gabrielle where they were going.

After a two weeks on the road, and not much information being given to her by the warrior, Gabrielle’s curiosity finally got the better of her. They were camped, had already eaten and were lying in their bedrolls trying to sleep when Gabrielle’s voice broke the still night air, “We’re going there aren’t we? Where you heard the voices?“

“We’ll be there tomorrow. It’s not too late for you to change your mind Gabrielle. I don’t....” Gabrielle rolled over on her side at looked with at the warrior in annoyance and firmly stated, “We’re not having this discussion again, Xena. I’m not leaving.”

Xena smiled. “Get some sleep. Tomorrow could be a pretty rough day.”

Gabrielle returned Xena’s smile, “’Nite Xena. You should get some sleep too you know.”

“I will Gabrielle....I will.” With that, the worn out bard rolled over and fell immediately to sleep. Xena, however, wasn’t as lucky. She laid on her back thinking about the day to come. She still couldn’t think of a way to get out of the bind she was in. She wasn’t in control and she didn’t like it.

Xena finally dozed off a few hours later only to be awoken abruptly by Gabrielle. The little bard was in the throes of what was obviously a nightmare. She was tossing and turning, mumbling something Xena couldn’t quite make out. Xena debated whether or not to wake her. She didn’t debate long. She didn’t have to for suddenly Gabrielle sat straight up in her bedroll and stared at her.

“Xeeeennnnnaaaaa” a disjointed voice emitted from Gabrielle’s mouth. Xena couldn’t move. She tried to reach Gabrielle’s bedroll, but whatever was currently in control of the bard had a hold of her too. “Our time is short. You must listen and trust in what we are telling you. You MUST NOT go to the glade, under any circumstances, or all will be lost. Please! Heed this warning well.”

“Where am I supposed to go?“ she asked in desperation. Gabrielle eyes closed and she slumped back into her bedroll. Whatever it had been, was gone. Xena hurried over to the bard. She laid the bard’s head in her lap and gently stroked her face. “Gabrielle........Gabrielle?” She wasn’t waking up. Xena felt a tinge of panic rising in her chest. “Gabrielle......wake up.” Oh Gods. Please Gabrielle, please wake up. “Gabrielle!” she practically shouted.

“Huh? Wha....It’s time to geddup already?” the bard asked sleepily. “C’mon Xena, juss a few more minnes k?” Xena’s chest heaved with a sigh of relief and the tension she’d been holding in her body slid free and left her limp. One green orb peered up at her and then both eyes sprung open. Gabrielle was now awake enough to realize that she was staring up into Xena’s face and that her head was in Xena’s lap. Not awake enough, however, to feel like moving.

“Hi there....?” Gabrielle said with a small grin. Xena could only laugh in her relief. Leave it to the bard to immediately make her feel better. When she had settled down a bit, Gabrielle asked, “I was wondering....You going to tell me why I’m lying here, in the middle of the night, with you holding me like this or do I get to guess.” Bad bard Gabrielle thought to herself. Ooooo very bad bard. Something really serious obviously just happened here and you’re making jokes. She just couldn’t help herself. Must be tired she thought...that or I’m dreaming.

The seriousness flowed back into Xena’s face, leaving her eyes dark again with worry. “Something had.....control over you. It spoke through you.”

Whoa! Ok, no more jokes Gabrielle thought. Nope....Not dreaming. She struggled to sit up. “You want to tell me what happened?” she asked gently.

“It was a voice....voices. Like the ones we heard from Dionclyenus. They told me not to go to the glade tomorrow........”

“Did they say anything else?” Gabrielle softly prompted.

“They said if I went to the glade all would be lost.”

“Did they tell us where we’re supposed to go?”

“I asked them but then they let you go. They had a hold of me too...somehow. I couldn’t move....couldn’t get to you.....while they had you......”

Suddenly it made sense Gabrielle thought. She was worried about me and I wake up making wise cracks. Way to go Gabrielle. She looked at Xena. She had never seen the warrior look so.......lost before. It scared her.

“Xena....I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said what I did. I.....”

“It’s ok Gabrielle. It’s ok. As long as I know you’re alright.” She gave Gabrielle a smile and then winked at her. “I have to admit Gabrielle.........that you’re pretty cheeky after you’ve been taken over by unseen forces.” Xena said with a dry tone, trying to relieve the tension she was watching build in the young woman’s body. Gabrielle just stared at her then flung herself at the warrior wrapping her arms around the leather clad body.

Ommph! She hadn’t been ready for THAT reaction. They ended up with Xena flat on her back, the bard half-way sprawled across Xena’s body. They stayed that way for a few moments. Xena’s mind raced. Well this is interesting she thought. I don’t want her to move. Cautiously she slid her arms around Gabrielle and held her gently. Gabrielle relaxed with her head resting on Xena’s chest, and before they knew it, they were both sound asleep.

*************************************************************************************

Xena woke up early the next morning to find Gabrielle still wrapped in her arms. She wasn’t sure what surprised her more, the fact that she still had her arms around the bard, or that Gabrielle still had her arms wrapped in a vice grip around her. She grudgingly admitted to herself that she...she...liked it. Get a grip warrior. What’s wrong with this picture? After some thought, she couldn’t think of one damn thing wrong with it. Hadn’t she been thinking before they left that Gabrielle had grown into quite a beautiful woman. Quite a change from the talkative young girl she had first met. Xena smiled to herself. Yeah, I could get used to this.

She didn’t want to disturb the bard’s rest, especially after the night they had had, so Xena waited patiently for her to awaken. As she waited, she noticed several things about Gabrielle that had somehow before escaped her attention. Little things....like how innocent her face was as she slept. How soft her hair was.....and her skin. Xena was so absorbed in looking at the bard she didn’t even realize she had begun to lightly stroke Gabrielle’s back.

Gabrielle felt the light touch and snuggled in closer, wrapping her arms even tighter around the warrior’s body. Mmmmmm.....she mumbled half asleep. She lazily opened her eyes, looked up and found Xena’s bright blue eyes staring back at her only inches away. What the.....The previous night came rushing back to her. “Oh Gods, Xena.....I’m sorry. I fell asleep on you like this?” Gabrielle knew that the warrior was not comfortable having someone invade her space like this. She struggled to get up. She was blushing...she could feel the heat of it all the way to her toes.

“Gabrielle, it’s ok......” Gabrielle gave her a doubtful look. “Really....it’s....I don’t mind it at all.“ Xena smiled at the obviously flustered bard, not loosening her hold on the smaller woman. “To be honest I rather enjoyed it.”

Gabrielle looked up at Xena. “You feeling ok?” the bard asked wondering if it were possible she was loosing her mind. She had to be dreaming this. Yep. A dream. Ok Gabrielle...you can wake up now.

“I feel pretty damn good if you want to know the truth.” Xena wickedly replied as she watched the blush on Gabrielle’s face deepen to even darker shade of red. “How’d you sleep?”

“Um....I slept fine. Just fine. Thanks. Really good actually.” the bard began to relax a little. Well if it is a dream....I don’t think I want to wake up. Xena’s obviously not bothered by this. She snuggled up tightly against the warrior, draping an arm around her middle. Oooooohhhh yeah. I like this. I’m staying like this for the rest of this dream. Voices and whatever be damned.

Xena knew they should get moving. She just didn’t feel like getting up right at the moment. A few quiet minutes passed. She let loose a sigh. They had things to do. Damn! Xena’s voice broke through Gabrielle’s musings, “You know, I’d love to stay like this all day, but unfortunately we should get up and get moving .....”

The reality of it hit Gabrielle. This wasn’t a dream! Xena really did have her arms around her and was ......Oh Gods! Gabrielle honestly didn’t think she could blush any deeper than she already was. She scrambled up. “Yeah...ok. It is getting late....I’ll get us some breakfast.”

They ate a quick breakfast and packed their gear. Gabrielle wasn’t saying much. She was too lost in her own thoughts. I really liked waking up with her like that. I’d like to do it again but.....What was Xena thinking about the whole thing? Grow up Gabrielle. You had a rough night. Xena was just comforting you. She doesn’t have those kinds of feelings for you. Yeah she’s your friend but anything more than that? Yeah right.

Xena was lost in thoughts of her own. She too had really liked what had happened with Gabrielle last night. Never before had she felt so comfortable with someone in her arms. Strange. She really liked Gabrielle but she was just a kid right? That was no kid you were holding.......

“I’m ready when you are....” Gabrielle said a bit hesitantly.

“I’m ready. Let’s go.” Xena replied.

“Where are we headed? That voice said not to go to the glade. What now?”

Xena’s mind shifted and was totally on the business at hand. “I thought we might pay a little visit to Pheperon and to Dioncylenus.” Gabrielle nodding in understanding. “He knows something about all this Gabrielle and I intend to find out just what that is.”

*************************************************************************************

Xena wanted this whole thing over with. She still had no clue as to what was happening. She hated not having control over the situation. The only thing to do now was to try and get as much information out of Dioncylenus as she could. That and wait. Those damn voices. And now they were using Gabrielle. Not good. Xena could handle anything that was going to be thrown at her, but now the bard was definitely involved. It pissed her off.

“Xena? How long will it take us to get to Pheperon?”

“I don’t know...guess about a week. Why?”

“Just making conversation. You’ve been pretty quiet since we left this morning.” Gabrielle stated with caution.

She had been more quiet than usual...even for her. “I’m sorry Gabrielle. Just thinking. Was there anything in particular you wanted to chat about.” Xena thought for sure she was going to bring up what had happened the night before.

“No, not really. I mean, I guess if you.....maybe.....oh never mind.”

Xena decided to let it rest. It was obviously not something she wanted to discuss right now. She felt a tad guilty. The bard must be having trouble accepting what had happened. Xena’s heart sank. She doesn’t feel that way for you. Let it go.

*************************************************************************************

The rest of the week went by uneventful. They met few people on the road to Pheperon and those they did see passed by without comment. When they reached the outskirts of the town, Xena pulled to a stop.

“When we get into town Gabrielle, let me do all the talking. I want to go in, find this guy, get what I need, and leave.” Her tone a bit short.

Gabrielle didn’t argue with her. She had heard that voice coming from Dionclyenus and didn’t want to hear it again. It was a bit unsettling. “Let’s do it.” Gabrielle responded determinedly, a grim look overtaking her normally soft features.

They took up the trail once again and before long they were in town. What was left of it that is. Dionclyenus had been telling the truth. SOMETHING had attacked the place. The smell was the first thing to hit them. They looked around and soon saw the cause. There were still bodies lying in the street. Gabrielle’s nose wrinkled in disgust. Ugh, it’s a good thing I didn’t eat much for lunch she thought to herself.

Xena was busy surveying the damage. Many of the buildings had been destroyed. What was still left standing was barely worth repairing. She scanned the area. She could feel someone‘s eyes following her movements. Someone or something was there. “I know you’re there so why don’t you come on out!” She shouted. Gabrielle jumped at hearing Xena’s voice crash through the dead silence. “C’mon out. We mean you no harm. We’d like to know what happened here.”

Xena caught a slight movement to her right. She turned. An older woman was creeping out from one of the lesser damaged buildings. “Who are you and what do you want?” the old woman demanded. “We have nothing left as you can see. Just go and leave us in peace.”

“My name is Xena and this is my friend Gabrielle. We’d like to know what happened here. Were you attacked?” Xena asked a bit more gently than she ordinarily would have as she dismounted from Argo. Gabrielle followed her lead and was now standing beside her.

“Well now, that’s pretty obvious isn’t it!?” the old woman snapped. “Why should I tell you and that little friend of yours anything?”

Gabrielle stifled a grin.

Xena kept her now building temper under control. “We’re looking for a friend of ours. Goes by the name Dionclynenus. Is he......?”

“That coward!” the woman spat. “Ran as soon as everything started happening. We haven’t seen him since.”

Gabrielle could tell that the woman‘s abruptness was getting to Xena a bit and decided to jump in “Do you have any idea where he might have gone? Does he have any family close by?”

“Nosy little thing aren’t ya?” the old woman hacked out. “I’ll tell you what you want to know...but it’s going to cost ya! You two do have dinars right?”

Xena had to give the old crone credit. She was a pretty gutsy old thing. “I’ve got money....How much I give you will be determined by the information you have to offer.”

The woman gave Xena a cold look. “Let me see it first.”

Xena dug in her saddlebags, grabbed the bag containing the coins, shook it for the woman and raised an eyebrow as if questioning the woman. This good enough for you?

A glint came into the old woman’s eyes. “Ok, I’ll tell you. He’s got some family down in Tholia. He probably took off for there. Take the west road out of town. Should only take you a couple of days to get there. Now gimme my money! You won’t get no more outta me cause that’s all I know!”

Xena had to hope the woman was telling the truth. She dug a few coins out of the bag and threw them at the old woman’s feet. “Thanks” the warrior said smugly.

The old woman didn’t even look down. An evil grin appeared and suddenly she yelled, “Get ‘em boys.”

Nope. Never easy. Xena thought to herself as she reached behind for her sword. Gabrielle got her staff into position. They were ready.

A group of about 10 men quickly had them surrounded. They were all heavily armed and had obviously done this before.

“Alright boys!” Xena said with a sneer. “Which one of you wants some first?” The battle fire had been lit behind Xena’s eyes and she wanted one of them. Didn’t matter which one. “C’mon......I’m waiting.” she growled.

Two of the closest to her tried their luck first. They rushed at Xena, swords slashing at her. She moved to the right, letting the first one run right by her, aiming a kick to his side and connecting as he rushed passed. He went flying halfway across the road. Her attention was already focused on the other as he aimed his sword right at her head. She easily blocked the swing, taking him out with a vicious swing of her left fist. He went flying. Xena took enough time to glance over at Gabrielle. She seemed to be doing just fine. Xena focused her attention back to the other men waiting for their turn at her.

Gabrielle had her hands full as two of the men came at her. The first swung his sword, almost getting her right arm. She managed to bring her staff up under the blow and deflect it just before it nicked her skin. Guess I’m a little rusty she thought. She spun bringing her staff around, catching the man on the side of the head, sending him tumbling in a somersault onto the ground, out cold. She didn’t wait for the second man to strike. She ducked down slightly, swinging the staff across in front of her, catching the man in the knees, sweeping him to the ground. She jumped up and planted a hard pop with the end of her staff to the man’s temple, taking him out. Ok, guess I’m not as rusty as I thought. Another one headed her direction. Here we go again the bard thought. Don’t they ever learn? She made quick work of getting him out of the way by simply walking up to him and plugging him dead in the face with the end of her staff. Sheesh was all the bard could think. Too easy.

Three more of the men were now trying to take Xena on. They all rushed her at once. “Aiaiaiaiaiai” Xena let loose a wild battle cry. She crouched then sprang into the air, twisting in a midair somersault, and coming to rest behind the surprised attackers. “Looking for me boys?” She asked with a feral grin. “Here I am!” And with that, she quickly kicked the first one square in the butt and sent him sprawling. The second, she took out using the flat edge of her sword to knock him silly, while at the same time, kicking out with her left foot and sending the third flying into the back of a broken wagon some forty paces away. She was playing with them now and the remaining men knew it. “What’s it gonna be? Still wanna play?” Xena asked. The remaining attackers didn’t think twice. They turned tail and ran.

Xena and Gabrielle met up in the middle of the street, looking for the old woman. She had disappeared as quickly as her men had.

“Ok Xena. Now what?” Gabrielle asked with a big grin.

“I guess we head for Tholia. It’s as good as any other place to start. Whadda ya think?” Xena answered.

“You believed that old woman?” Gabrielle asked, a tint of doubt in her voice.

“She was telling the truth Gabrielle. I know that much. Let’s go.”

They gathered the horses, mounted up, and headed out. “You know what really ticks me off about this whole thing today Gabrielle?” Xena asked as they rode out of town.

“What’s that?”

“That old hag actually managed to get away with the money I threw at her!” Xena replied with disgust.

Gabrielle just threw her head back and laughed.

Xena scowled. “That’s not supposed to be funny bard!”

“I know.....but......” she was laughing so hard she couldn’t talk.

“Gabrielle......” Xena’s voice had a tinge of humor in it.

Gabrielle’s giggles continued. She kept picturing the old woman scooping up the coins and heading for the nearest place to hide.

“Gabrielle.....” Oh to Hades with it Xena thought and had a good laugh of her own.

*************************************************************************************

“Oh shit!” Xena awoke with a start that night. Gabrielle was having another nightmare. Xena wondered if the voices were about to make a return. She didn’t have to wait long before her question was answered. As before the bard sat straight up in her bedroll, stared at Xena and said “You must not find Dionclyenus. He is with them.” Xena didn’t wait. She yelled into the still night air, “What am I supposed to do? What do you want from me?” The voices answered her, “You must wait near Carapathanon.” Then they were gone and Gabrielle had once again slumped into her bedroll. Xena scrambled over to Gabrielle to make sure she was alright. She was a bit cautious after what had happened the last time. She remembered the bard’s discomfort at being in such close quarters with her. She reach over and pushed a stray stand of hair from Gabrielle‘s eyes.

“Gabrielle.......“ She said gently. “Wake up!” She placed a hand on Gabrielle’s shoulder giving her a nudge.

Gabrielle began to stir. Tell me it’s not time to get up already she thought groggily. Xena gently nudged her again. “mmmph.....I’m up...I’m up. She sat up and gave Xena a cold stare with sleepy green eyes. Then she realized....not time to get up yet. She saw the look on Xena’s face. Something had happened. She was wide awake now. The voices again. Damn!

“What did they say?” the bard simply asked.

“Not much. Just that we’re supposed go near Carapathanon and wait.” Xena was mad. “I’m not very good at sitting around and waiting Gabrielle.”

“What do you want to do Xena?”

“As much as I hate to say this. We’ll be heading to Carapathanon to wait.” Xena stated flatly.

That didn’t sound like the Xena she knew. Xena? Willing to sit and wait? Gabrielle had to ask. She didn’t want to question the warrior’s judgment but on this.......the whole situation and the way Xena had been acting. It was just too odd. “Xena.....Why are you going to listen to them?” Realizing she sounded a bit harsh, Gabrielle softened her words. “I mean, what’s so different about this problem than a lot of the ones we’ve faced in the past?”

Xena was in no mood to try and explain but she felt she owed the bard something. “Gabrielle, usually when we’re up against something, we know what it is.” She didn’t want to admit this but, “I have no idea this time. I just don’t know what this thing or these voices are capable of and.....” She trailed off. What she had been going to say was she didn’t want to risk Gabrielle. She meant too much to the warrior. Like it or not, Xena had developed some pretty serious feelings for the little bard and was not about to lose her.

Gabrielle knew what Xena had been about to say. She’d been saying it since they left. Gods, when is she going to stop seeing me as some little kid, unable to take care of myself. It’s great that she cares about me. I really like the fact that she does......Dammit Xena. When will you realize.....? Will you ever?

Gabrielle made a snap decision. I guess it’s now or never. Somehow I have to make her understand. These voices want Xena. Doubt was creeping around in Gabrielle’s mind. What if they succeed? No, Xena would never let that happen! Gods, what if does? I can’t......I have to.....This probably isn’t the time or place for this but.......

“Xena....I know....You don’t want anything to happen to me.” Gabrielle’s face was serious . “I don’t want anything to happen to you either. You’re my best friend Xena.” She took a deep breath and looked dead into the warriors eyes as she continued. “I love you Xena.”

Silence. Oh Gods, what did she just say? Xena’s head was swimming, her heart pounding. Did she just tell me that she loved me? It’s just as a friend.....relax warrior and say something.

“I love you too Gabrielle.” Where in Hades had that come from?

She said she loves me too. Gabrielle’s heart skipped a beat. Ok oh wise bard, now what are you going to do with that? She panicked a little. Gods, I don’t know how to do this. Relax Gabrielle. Be honest with her. You may never get another chance to do this. The finality of that thought made up her mind.

“Xena, I don’t think you understand.” Jeez, that sounded terrible. She blushed. “I.....” Spit it out. You’re a bard...you’re supposed to be good with words! “I want.....I mean....I’d like to.....” Why was this so hard?

Xena got it alright, she just couldn’t believe it. Gabrielle had feelings for her. It was more than Xena could’ve hoped for. A sudden thought brought her down a notch. She shouldn’t feel this way. Gabrielle was so.....good. Look at my past.....so many terrible things......

Gabrielle was still stuttering trying to get out what she wanted to say. Ok.....if I can’t say it, I’ll just have to show her. “Xena......”

Something about the bard’s voice stopped Xena cold. It had dropped...sounding a bit....almost like......

Gabrielle moved so that she was kneeling directly in front of the warrior. Their eyes locked. Suddenly the words she was looking for were there. “Xena....I love you. I have for a long time. I don’t know what stopped me from telling you before. I was afraid I guess. I thought you wouldn‘t feel the same way.....” She trailed off unsure again of what to say next.

Xena was dumbfounded. The secret part of her heart, the one she had so carefully guarded for so long, was struggling to make itself heard. Out of nowhere she heard herself saying, “I love you too Gabrielle. I didn’t tell you.....I just didn’t think you could ever.....” She couldn’t say another word. Her tongue was in knots. She knew what she wanted to do. She reached over and laid a gentle hand on the side of Gabrielle’s soft face.

The bard leaned into the touch with quiet abandon. Finally she thought...finally.

Xena brought her other hand up, cupping Gabrielle’s face in her hands. She’s so soft was all Xena could think. Those eyes.......those bright green eyes....so beautiful...so easy to get lost in. She was lost alright and she never wanted to be found.

Gabrielle closed her eyes and was relishing the touch from the warrior. She had been waiting so long for just this moment. She was trembling.

Xena leaned, tipped her head down, and placed her lips gently against Gabrielle’s. She felt the bard respond but reluctantly pulled away. She had to be sure this was really what Gabrielle had in mind. She looked at the bard.

Gabrielle slowly opened her eyes......to see Xena staring at her in wonder. “Gabrielle......Are you sure?”

Gods, Gabrielle lips were still tingling from the contact with the warrior. Am I sure? I’ll show you how sure I am Warrior Princess. She slowly climbed into Xena’s lap, straddling her. Xena’s eyes rounded in surprise. Wrapping her arms around her warrior, she placed a tender kiss on Xena’s waiting lips. The kiss deepened and they spent the next few minutes slowly exploring these new sensations......and then.....

“Gabrielle! GABRIELLE! WAKE UP!” A voice was calling her name and.....Gods be damned. She woke up to a slightly irate Xena standing over her. Gabrielle was really confused. THAT was all a dream!!! It couldn’t be....it had been sooooo real!!! So real in fact, that her body was still tingling in the places that had come into contact with the warrior. “Bout time you got up.” She heard Xena saying, “I was beginning to think you were going to sleep all day! C’mon, we’ve got to get moving.”

“Yeah, Ok....I’m up.” Gabrielle grudgingly pulled herself into a sitting position and rubbed the sleep out of her tired eyes. “Where are we going?” the bard asked.

“Carapathanon.” was Xena’s short reply. She hadn’t slept well. She’d had this dream that was still bothering her. Gabrielle had been taken over by the voices, they had been told to go to Carapathanon, and then.........

Gabrielle looked at the warrior in shock., a complete look of disbelief on her face. “What did you just say?”

“I said we’re going to Carapathanon.” Xena snapped. She looked at the bard and caught the look. “What’s the matter with you?” The bard had paled and was just staring at her.

“Carapathanon?” It couldn’t be....could it? Things were getting stranger by the minute. “It’s just that I....” the bard couldn’t help it, she could feel the heat flooding her face. “I had this dream last night. We were told to go there.”

Now it was Xena’s turn to be shocked. “Tell me what happened.”

“Not much,” Gabrielle replied, “I was taken over by the voices again and they said to go to Carapathanon and wait.” She wasn’t about to admit to the OTHER part of the dream.

Xena couldn’t believe it. They’d had the same dream...or at least part of it. She wasn’t going to ask but before she could stop herself she heard herself saying, “Did......did anything else happen in this dream Gabrielle?” she asked trying to keep the hope from showing in her voice.

Gabrielle blushed an even deeper shade of red as she looked at the ground. She couldn‘t look at the warrior right now. How much should I tell her? I can‘t lie to her. “Um, yeah....I think so. I can’t really say what though.” Boy was that the truth!

Xena didn’t press the bard any further. It was obvious something had happened that she wasn’t ready to share with her. It stung a little but the warrior blew it off. “I see. Well....it looks like we may have had the same dream last night.” Those voices, whoever or whatever they were had played with them both and Xena didn’t like it one bit, but they had told her to go. Something told Xena it was the right thing to do, so like it or not...they were going.

“The same dream? How is that possible?” Gabrielle wondered out loud.

“I don’t know, but it sure sounds that way. In any case, we’ve got to get going. We‘ll try and figure it out on the road. Let‘s go.”

Gabrielle gathered their things and they were off

They had been camped for over a week and Xena was getting restless. Very restless. Gabrielle could see the tension mounting in her friend as each day passed. It was beginning to frighten her. She’d never been afraid of the warrior before. There was a look in Xena’s eyes the bard had never seen before. It was something she just couldn’t explain and didn’t know if she even really wanted to go there. They’d had another encounter with the voices who simply told them they were in the right place and that Xena’s services would be required shortly. Gabrielle knew the whole situation was taking a toll on her friend. It seemed the more Gabrielle tried to get Xena to talk about the problem, the more morose the warrior became.

Xena was spending more and more time out in the empty field not too far from the campsite, working on drills and sword moves. Anything really, just to keep her mind from turning the puzzle over and over in her mind. She was quiet. She knew it was driving her talkative companion insane but she couldn’t help it. She had so much going on in her mind. When? How? What did they want her to do? Who was interfering? Why were they involving Gabrielle? She had no answers. She felt at a loss. This certainly was a new experience for her. I always have the answers don’t I? She was beginning to doubt herself. She didn’t like it. She didn’t like it at all. She chided herself for the look she’d seen creeping into Gabrielle’s face lately. She saw fear. What was putting it there? This whole situation we’re in? Me? No, that can’t be it...she trusts me....doesn’t she? Xena felt like she was losing her mind......again.

*********

Xena returned to the campsite that night in a bad mood.

“Dinner’s ready Xena.”

“Good” was the warriors only reply.

They ate a quiet meal. When they were finished, Gabrielle took a chance and walked over and sat behind the warrior fully intent on working out some of the tension she was seeing in her friends shoulders. As she laid her hands on the warriors shoulders she found them immediately knocked away.

“Don’t!” the warrior snapped.

Gabrielle jerked back as if she’d been slapped. Gabrielle had had enough. “Xena! What is happening to you? You march in here after being gone all day. You eat and don’t say a word. I’m trying to be as understanding as I can, but even I have to draw the line somewhere. I’m your friend...don’t shut me out like this” she pleaded.

Xena was definitely not in the right frame of mind for this. “Gabrielle don’t start with me. Not now. I am not in the mood.”

“Well what do you want me to do?” the bard angrily replied. “You can’t expect me to just sit here and watch you tear yourself apart day after day now can you? What I see happening to you scares me Xena. A lot. I know it bothers you to not know what’s happening but is this any way to deal with it...by shutting out your best friend?”

“I’m warning you Gabrielle. Leave it alone.” Xena growled.

Gabrielle had no idea where all this anger was coming from but she had to get it out. “Leave it alone? You want me to leave it alone? I won’t.“ She got up and started pacing. “You have always been there for me.....Let me be here for you. Tell me what’s going on inside that warrior head of yours? She was shouting now. “Is it so hard for you to admit that you don‘t always have the answers?”

Something in Xena snapped and the bloodthirsty part of her that she kept so deeply buried surfaced. “You might want to watch that tone and who you take it with little girl. Might get you hurt someday.” she said quietly to herself. She quickly advanced towards the bard who in her anger was still pacing.

Gabrielle didn’t hear her coming. As she turned, Xena reached out and grabbed the bard by the throat. “Remember who I am and what I am capable of.”

*************************************************************************************

“Xena?“ Gabrielle choked out. She was so confused. She just couldn’t believe it. Her hands reaching up to grab at the hand so mercilessly at her throat. The reality of it hit her. Oh Gods. What is happening here?

Xena was not focusing. She knew she had someone by the throat and that person had just really pissed her off. They were pleading for their life. She liked it when they did that.

“Xena.....it’s Gabrielle.....Please.....”

Xena thought this is ridiculous and taking far too long.....she squeezed a bit harder.

She knew she wasn’t going to stay conscious much longer. “Xeeeeena......” Gabrielle’s vision swam and finally went dark.

When Xena realized the body she was holding onto had gone limp, she released it and it slumped to the ground. She waved a hand at it. Ehhhh....someone will pick it up later. She looked around the campsite. Where in Hades was she? This wasn’t her camp. She didn’t like this. And who was that she had been holding onto? She decided she needed a closer look at that body.

Whoever it was....they were still breathing. Xena rolled the person over. Xena’s mind snapped again.

******************

“Gabrielle!!!” Xena was frantic. What had happened? “Gabrielle...Please.....” It was almost a whimper. She pulled the limp body of the bard close and scanned the campsite. No signs of a struggle. Odd. No struggle yet she’s been.....The voices? This was getting ugly. “Gabrielle....please....wake up.” You can’t take her from me now you just can’t. Tears formed in the clear blue eyes and one marked its way down Xena’s face. She collected herself. You need to take care of her...get to it. Xena picked up the bard and placed her in the bedroll. She checked to make sure the smaller woman was still breathing and went for her medicine pouch. She extracted what she needed and proceeded to make a salve for the bards throat and set some tea to steep. It would help with the pain when.....and if.....the bard ever woke up. With that done, there was nothing else for the warrior to do but wait. She carefully placed Gabrielle’s head in her lap and gently stroked the bards fair hair. “When I find the bastards who did this to you Gabrielle....I swear.....”

Xena had a new puzzle to work on. How had they gotten past her defenses? She couldn’t remember being attacked. She was sure they hadn’t been. They had finished dinner and Gabrielle had been asking her to talk about what was going on and then everything just sort of......blacked out for awhile. And when everything came back she had been looking down at Gabrielle’s unconscious form......the finger marks still fresh on her throat......it was going to be a long night.

***********

Xena was greeted the next morning by a flash of blue light.

“That was a little harsh don’t you think Xena?”

Ares. Great. Just what she needed right about now. “What do you want Ares?” Xena sneered.

“Was just wondering what your little friend there did to deserve what you did to her?” His tone was doing nothing to help Xena’s mood.

Xena raised an eyebrow.

Ares continued with a smirk, “I think it’s so admirable of you to do the deed and then try to fix it. What’s the matter Xena....you finally get tired of her?”

“I’m in no mood for games Ares....so I’m only gonna say this once and I want an answer...what are you talking about?” Xena’s mind was racing. Just WHAT was he talking about?

“Her, of course.” He pointed at the bard. “I wouldn’t have done it quite the way you did.” He smiled. I....would have done it right. Must be losing your touch Xena. We‘ll fix that. I must admit, it did my heart good Xena.....to see that fire again. Spectacular!” With a laugh and another flash of light...he was gone.
