Cowling, May 11 2004, 1472 hours

Jodie flew out at the end of April from Chapel Hill to help with the cowling. I decided to depart from Van's plans which call for using piano hinge to hold the cowling to the firewall. Instead, I bought a camloc fastner kit from Skybolt in Florida. It was expensive (around $350) but it was much easier to install and it looks like it'll make removing the cowling a lot easier. This is Jodie working on the flanges that mount the fastners to the firewall.

My seats finally came in from ClassicAero in Oregon. The quality is very nice. I'd recommend them but order early. Their stated (and accurate) lead time is 8 weeks.

Got to try out the seat.

My brother bought a new folding bike for his Piper Cherokee. This dog attacked me while I was trying it out.

My wayward parents are in town for a month. My dad has been helping out everyday that I can get away from work. He's been a huge help. He helped me solve my cowling positioning dilemma. Here's the cowling all clecoed up.

I finished running all the wires to the tail for the strobe and elevator trim and then we riveted on the aft skins. To buck some of these, I had to lay inside the tail with my head toward the tailwheel.

Only one more skin to rivet after these.

My dad offered to help on the airplane all week if I took off from work. He didn't have to ask twice. We've already got about 40 hours of work in after 2 1/2 days. Hopefully, we'll have all the major work done before the week is over.
