Finished Baffles, June 16, 2004, 1594 hrs

The engine baffling shown above took much longer than I expected. I was estimating about two days but it ended up to be about 60 hrs spread over three weeks. There aren't many holes in the parts that you start with so all of the rivet holes must be drilled. All ten pieces must be cut to fit under the cowling. Then you install the oil cooler on the back of one of the baffles.

Here's the oil door I installed. Van's gives you the door without hinges or latches and you have to cut the hole in the cowling. I didn't like Van's latches because they stuck up about a 1/2 inch from the cowling. I bought these two Hartzell latches from Spruce instead.

Van's gives you these fiberglass tips to rivet to the ends of the horizontal stabilizer. My dad did a nice job of putting them on. This week I filled in the ends with foam and glassed over it with an epoxy/microballoon mix.

Here's a current shot of the airplane. All of the really major projects are finished. Lots of little details to go - some engine wiring, calibrating the fuel guages, installing the ailerons, elevators, and rudder.
