Opeth/Porcupine Tree
Damnation/In Absentia Tour

This was an amazing show.  Opeth and Porcupine Tree co-headlined, so both bands played full sets.  Opeth went onstage first and played the entire Damnation album from start to finish.  We ended up being very close to the front and had a great view of everything.  There were some technical problems (i.e. some buzzing from one of the guitars I think) but the band played a great set.  After they were finished playing the new album, they went into a few older songs, including "To Bid You Farewell" from Morningrise.  I was a bit bummed that they did not play any of their heavier songs ("Deliverance" is one of my favorites), but it was a great show and I think my friend Ann, who was adventurous enough to accompany me to this death metal show, was impressed.  Even though Opeth played their mellow songs, they still rocked out.  It was great.

Porcupine Tree also played a great set.  I had never heard any of their music before coming to the concert, but I had done a little pre-show research that led me to believe they are a pretty talented band.  I loved every minute of the show.  Ann was hooked from the beginning.  They opened with "Blackest Eyes" and I think the chorus lyric "I've got books I've never read" really did it for her....that and Steven Wilson's glasses.  I was especially into "Russia On Ice."  I'll definitely be in the audience the next time Porcupine Tree comes around.
