| NEGAUNEE - John R. Symons, Sr., 86, 102 W. Peck St. Negaunee died at 4:27 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans where he had been a patient for 2 weeks. John was born Dec. 20, 1913 in Negaunee to Oliver & Celia (Roberts) Symons, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1931 and was a member of the football team. He joined the U.S. Army in 1939 and served in Panama for 4 years. Upon his return to the States he was drafted for active duty. He was sent to Germany, served for 4 more years, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his service to his country he married Mary Lousie Leveille in 1946.His working career included positions with the Employment Office, CCI and he served as the Negaunee Postmaster from 1975 until his retirement. He was a member of the Marquette Figure Skating Club, performed in several ice shows and taught youth figure skating. He was a former member of the Negaunee Moose Lodge. Of his many hobbies which included fishing, hunting, and being in the woods, he most loved his skating. Surviving are 2 sons; John R. Symons, Robert (Bonita) Symons, 4 daughters; Kathleen Symons. Patricia (Howard) Garbett, Sheree (Joe) Pelletier, and Julie (Keith) Heidtman, all of Negaunee, 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary Louise in 1975, a son, Michael in 1993, and infant son, Oliver in 1965, a brother, Oliver and s sister, Dorothy Warner. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. D. Michael Carriere, pastor of Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 10:30 AM until the time of services at noon on Saturday. |
