| MICHIGAMME - Prominent area educator John E. Hicks, 80 of Michigamme died Thursday morning at Bell Memorial Hospital. Born March 16 1907, in Marquette, he graduated from Michigamme High School in 1925, Northern Michigan University in 1947. He had a distinguished career in education as a teacher, coach and administrator for nearly 50 years. His career included years in Michigamme, Brown City, Trenary, Manton, Cheboygan and Dowagiac. He retired in 1969 from NMU, where he was director of public services. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a stall officer on destroyer escorts in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Surviving are his wife, Martha (Simonen); a son, John H.; a daughter, Margaret Rich; a sister, Lorene Cummings; a brother, Earl; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Champion, with the Rev. Daniel Knock officiating. The Harris Funeral Home of Ishpeming is in charge of arrangements. |
