| BARAGA - Selman A Dompier, 87 of Baraga, died Tuesday at the Winkler Nursing Home, following a lengthy illness. She was born October 29, 1909 in Finland, a daughter of Herman and Jennie (Hirvosniemi) Alatalo. She came to the U.S. in 1910, and had lived in Baltic, Mi until moving to Baraga Township in 1917. She graduated from the Baraga High School in 1928. She was married to the late Wilfred Dompier April 17, 1929. He preceded her in death November 23, 1979 Mrs. Dompier was active in church, school and community. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, parish chairperson of the hunters supper, Women's prayer breakfast, and taught CCD. She was an officer and member of the Foucault-Funke Post 444 American Legion Auxiliary, officer and member of the Baraga Fire Department Auxiliary, Baraga Planning Commision, Lumberjack Day Committee, Memorial Day Committee, the 1969 Eagles Mother of the Year, Cub Scout Leader, Baraga Township Centennial Committee, and Baragaland Senior Citizens. She was active as a member of the PTA, a teachers aide, and chaired the All School Reunion, She was a member of UPCAP and served on the Grovernors Senior Power Board. She also did volunteer work for the Cancer Society, and March of Dimes, and the Toastmistress Club. Surviving are 1 daughter, Mrs Mary Jane (Bud) LaJoye of Hastings, Mi, 6 sons; Raymond (Mary Ann), James (Doris), Jerry (Diane), Richard (Bonnie) and Wendell Dompier all of Baraga and Douglas (Irene) Dompier of Vancouver, WA, 1 brother; Arvi (Elizabeth) Alatalo of Baraga Township, 3 sisters; Francis Alatalo of Newberry, Rose Mathes of L'Anse and Mary Ann Keranen of Alston, Mi, 2 daughters-in-law, Margaret Dompier of L'Anse and Phyliss Dompier of Gaylord, Mi. She is also survived by 37 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by 3 sons, a daughter, 1 grandson and 1 great-grandson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga, with Fr. Paul Manderfield officiating. Burial will be in the Baraga Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sirard Funeral Home Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. and a Legion Auxiliary service at 7:30 p.m. |
