| Baraga - Richard "Chip" Dompier, 54, of Baraga, died suddenly Thursday, November 8, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Baraga, Mi on June 1, 1947, the son of the late Wilfred and Selma (Alatalo) Dompier. He attended Baraga Area Schools. Chip married the former Bonnie Koykka on March 17, 1986 in Las Vegas, NV. Richard learned his life skill as butcher at the former Beck's Store in Baraga, and later worked at Larry's Market for over 36 years. Chip was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. He was also a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. He was also a member of the Lion's Club serving as past King Lion and the Americdan Legion Baraga Post 444. He was one of the founders of the Baraga Lumberjack Days and served as chief of the Baraga Fire Department, retiring after 30 years. He started "Chip's Kids" through the Fire Department, a fire safety education program in the schools and for senior citizens. He was a member of the National Guard, retiring after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Baraga County Housing Commission. He was a volunteer ambulance driver and organizer, a coach, and a manager of Baraga Little League. He played on the Baraga fast pitch softball team. Chip was an avid rabbit hunter and ice fisherman. His leisure activities included attending auctions and yard sales. He and his family enjoyed traveling and camping. His passion was food, both butchering and preparing meals. He and his wife Bonnie were widely known for their catering business. He cooked for the National Guard and is remembered as chef of the annual St. Ann's Hunter Supper. The Detroit Lions blue and silver as his other life passion. Chip was the Lions' most loyal UP fan. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; 3 sons, Chad at home, Bill of Grand Rapids and Tom and fiancee Jennifer at MSU in East Lansing; 2 daughters, Jennifer of Grand Rapids and Amy and her special friend Jeff of Chesterfield MI; 5 brothers, Ray (Mary Ann), James (Doris), Jerry (Diane), Wendell and his special friend Judy, all of Baraga and Douglas (Irene) of Spokane, WA; sister, Mary Jane (Melvin) LaJoye of Hastings, Mi; sister-in-law, Phyllis of Gaylord, Mi; mother-in-law, Vi Karvakko of Baraga; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Peggy Danis of Las Vegas, NV. Numerous aunts, nieces and nephews also survive. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Monday, November 12, 2001 from St Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga. Father George Joseph will be the Celebrant and interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. A Military graveside service will be held at the cemetery. The family will recieve friends Sunday, November 11, 2001 from 6 until 9pm at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, and one hour prior to the Mass on Monday at the church. A parish prayer will be held at 7pm in the Chapel. Baraga Area Firemen will conduct a review at 7:30 followed by the American Legion Baraga Post 444. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, is assisting the family with arrangements. |
