Alvern Dishnow
MICHIGAMME - Alvern Dishnow, age 93 of 120 Railroad St., Michigamme passed away on Saturday June 9, 2001 at his home in Michigamme.
Alvern was born December 20, 1907 in Michigamme to the late Moses and Amelia (Hicks) Dishnow.  As a child he lived in Pequaming, moving to Michigamme in his teens with his family, where he has resided since.  He graduated from the Michigamme High School, Class of 1925.  He was a commissioned reserve officer in the United States Coast Guard.  Alvern worked as a Mate and later a Captain for the Reiss Steamship Co. which became the American Steamship Co. on the Great Lakes for 38 years, retiring in 1971.  He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Ouellette Council.  He was a former member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Michigamme Lions Club.
Survivors include a son Michael (Diane) Dishnow of Soldiers Grove, Wi; 2 daughters - Kathleen (Kenneth) Niemi of Port Huron, Mi and Marlene (Morgan) Pierce of Leslie, Mi; a brother Anthony Dishnow of Westland, Mi; 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, special nieces Ruth Smith of Newark, DE and Grace Hammond of Fernandina Beach, FL along with sever other nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife Leah on June 25, 2000 and a grandson Michael Dishnow.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday June 12, 2001 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion with the Rev. Fr. Ben Paris to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Michigamme.
Friends may call from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM on Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Champion.
Pallbearers will be Michael Dishnow, Marcus McGirr, Kenneth and Kellan Niemi, & Morgan & Shannon Pierce.  Honorary Pallbearers will be his dear friends and caregivers - Karen Koski, Larry Paquette and Art Benson.
The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
