Return to Philomen's Family
Mrs. George Dishno, 100, Dies After Week's Illness
ISHPEMING - Marquette County's oldest resident, Mrs George Dishno, who celebrated her 199th birthday earlier this summer, died last night in Bell Memorial Hospital, where she was a patient for one week.
Mrs. Dishno was one of the "real old-timers" of the Champion-Michigamme region, living there for over 36 years.
She lived on a farm about halfway between the two communities.  She resided in the area until 1900, when the family moved to Bessemer to live for 14 years.
In 1914 Mr and Mrs. Dishno returned to the farm and remained there until her husband died in 1934.  She then left to reside with a foster daughter, Mrs. Charles Richards of Snell Plat, Ishpeming.
Mrs. Dishno was born June 18, 1864, in Sable Forks, N.Y.
Many of her friends remember her secret to a long life in which she related, "Hard work, clean living and an appreciation of what nature has to offer, are the ingredients of a long life."
This past summer when she celebrated her 100th birthday, Mrs. Dishno recalled vividly the "good old days" of her life in which she thought nothing of working 18 hours a day.
During her last few years of active life, Mrs. Dishno enjoyed a rich and interesting schedule which included playing cards, knitting, making carpets and helping with the household chores.
"Hard work never hurts anyone," she said, in an interview with a Mining Journal reporter last June.
Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Richards; four grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.
The body is at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday.
Services will be held in St Pius X Church at 9 a.m. Saturday.
