Nothing defines Cebus history or in fact the Philippines is the arrival of the Spanish in 1521 with the religion of Christianity. The first Catholic Mass was held in Cebu and was marked by a wooden cross Magellan brought with him. Thousands of tourists come to Cebu to see Magellans Cross in downtown Cebu. The cross is still in place. Magellan's Cross was originally planted by Ferdinand Magellan on 21st April 1521.Because of its age and now-delicate state, the cross is encased in tindalo wood. If you look overhead in the building sheltering the cross, you will see a painted mural that depicts the cross' planting. Look at the painting carefully and you will see that the cross is lashed together; a Fort San Pedro painting shows the same scene, but the cross is nailed together.
