Since this article is about hares I will do it in
Hare-speak
Hares are jolly good chaps Wot wot!
They are mostly Feared warriors and Praised Colonel

I don't know why but most have Really Bally-Flippin'

He ran away from his Patter and joined the Flippin' Long Patrol wot! and Scarum or Bescarum

Sackfirth Toxophola Fedlric Fritillary Wilfrand Hurdlerrame Longarrow Leaweelt Pugnacio Cinnabar
Hillwether Joddtrellio Now theres a bally name Wot wot!!!! and Jodd wanted to be a Squirrel! He would
tie his Tail to his ears in hope of his tail growing like a
squirrels!
Then theres the Brainy Types like Martha Braebuck She
was a good gel. Could not walk and in a blinkin' Wheelchair. But she
looked on the bright side and turned her skills to reading and learning Wot! But all Hares have a Tum
Wot! And most need eight square Meals a day! Look at Scarum He Got in trouble for eating all the food..
Two times! But Where would you go if you wanted to find a Hare?
I would say Salamandastron, Home of the Badger lords
and there are Always Hares there.
(Must Be all the Bally food Wot wot!)
So there you have it...
A Good Report on Hares and there life.

..::Badger Lords::..

By Sunfur Zion Rosestripe

Badgerlords. We all know them. Rulers of their great mountain of Salamandastron. This strange place has existed ever since the dawn of time. Badgers have been called there by the spirit inside them.
The first badger Lord that we know of Is Stonepaw (From the book Lord Brocktree). He was the Father of
Brocktree of Brockhall. He ruled the mountain longer that any other Badger Lord. After him came Lord
Brocktree. He organized the Long Patrol, the Levirate School and the mountain became stronger since he
ruled. His son, Boar the Fighter, Ruled after him. Boar was Friend to Martin the Warrior (Mossflower). He
re-forged the Warriors sword after Tsarimina destroyed it.
Boar had no son. Only a daughter, Bella of Brocktree (Brock means Badger So in other sense, she was
called Bella of Badger tree, badger tree, brockhall, get it?) She met and married Barkstripe. They had a
son, Sunflash the Mace. It is not known how, but he was kidnapped by Swartt Sixclaw and used as a slave to
the evil ferret. Rawhide straps were used as hobbles, and Swartt called his catch Scumtripe. Sunflash
was young, maybe only a teenager to us, but he, with the help of a Kestrel (a type of bird) Escaped Swartts
clutches. Ruining the Ferrets six clawed paw in the process
Later, Sunflash was called by his spirit to Salamandastron. There he ruled wisely. We know not who his
son was, but we do know that his Great (great) Grandson was Rawnblade Whidestripe. He was strongest of
badger Lords. He ruled with a mighty paw. He, with the Help of Meriel the mousemaid, and Dandin
Swordcarrier, fought against Gabool the Wild, King of all searats!
The next badger Lord was Lord Urthstripe. He and his twin brother, an albino badger, were orphaned

because of Ferhago the Assassin. Both were separated, and Urthstripe found his way to
Salamandastron.
But Urthwyte (the albino) was taken by his grandmother, Loambudd, to an island. Urthstripes mountain
was attacked seasons later by the same creature that killed his parents. Ferhago! A mighty battle took
place.
After Urthstripe, Urthwyte ruled the mountain.
Soon Orlando the Axe journeyed to the mountain to die after his many seasons of living at Redwall
Abbey. He left his daughter, Auma, to rule the Abbey as the badger mother, after Contance, whom he was
great friends with.
After Orlando died a strange thing happened. A female badger took over the grand mountain! Her
name; Lady Cregga Rose Eyes. A beautiful name. She had the Bloodrath more that any other badger in
recording. She had a grand old temper, but ruled her mountain wisely. Then, the Rapscallion army came!
Lady Cregga took half her hares from Salamandastron (One thousand) and tracked them. Together, her,
the Redwallers and woodlanders of all Mossflower fought the bravest and grandest fight of all time, The battle of the Ridge.
After the battle Cregga came to Redwall Abbey. She never returned to Salamandastron. She became
Cregga Badgermum. The bloodrath gone from her vains, she helped to raise Russano. A young badger cub
found during the war. He was the wisest of all badgers known. He, after he had been raised and educated
by Cregga, came to the mountain of Salamandastron. He ruled there greatly. His wife, Lady Rosalin, had
two cubs, Snowstripe and Melanes. He later returned to Redwall Abbey after having a dream, were Cregga
returned to him, telling him of her death. He came, with one thousand Long Patrol hares, only to find a
band of Juska vermin at their gates. He outnumbered the Juska vermin about three to one. The Vermin
left after a sound convincing. Russano found the Grave of the only mother he had ever known, and
honored her there.
After Russano, came five badger Lords. The next one we know by name is Lord Hightor. Lord Hightors
Wife, Lady Merola, was Russanos fifth great grandchild. They had a son, Sagaxus. He wandered away from
the mountain to have adventures with his friends, and otter, Kroova, and a hare, Bescarum (Scarum).
They later met up with Triss, the next warrior maid of Redwall Abbey. After their adventures, they
stayed at Redwall. It is not written if the young badger ever returned to the Mountain, although I think
that he did. The mountain must have called him at sometime. The last Badger Lord known so far is Lonna
Bowstripe.
After the badger that raised Lonna was slain by vermin, Lonna journeyed on a quest to slay his friends
murders. He finally fulfilled his quest, and becames Badger Lord of all Salamandastron.
Now we wait for the next Badgerlord to come forth in Brian's next Book "Rakkety Tam" Who do you think it will be?

The abbey was the center of the community as well as the castle or nearby fortress. If the Castle had enough room it was often attached to the castle itself.
This was a time of great secrecy. The greatest writers and philosophers teachings were kept far away from the hands of the people. Even the Abbess or Abbot often was kept in the dark. They were taught to read and write, so that records and other important documents could be kept, but they were too far removed from the great library of the day, the Vatican, to continue their own education.
Most of them had access to the Bible or a copy of it. Although it was very often an incomplete copy. So their little flocks often had to be content with passages from each book rather than understanding the whole.
The average man didn't have much time for reading anyway. He arose early to milk the family cow if he was lucky enough to afford one. If not he had to barter and trade for a little cream once in a while to make butter for special occasions. Most concoctions were made with lard, or pig fat. Often lard was spread on a piece of bread and thought to be heavenly! They used it just like butter.
After he milked the cow, and fed the animals, the father of the family would spend the better part of the first two days of the week taking care of his families crops. Any repairs had to be done also. Maybe the grass on the roof needed to be mended (we know it as thatching) or new muddy clay used to fix a storm runnoff leak on the side of the cottage. He needed to harvest, water, and provide for his own family during those two days, because on the next three, he would be working for the laird or Lord of the Castle in return for keeping the village and people safe. He also was trading for the property he used to support his family. Furing the middle ages, very few people owned their own property.
In fact, just after the year 1000, a doomsday document tells of the the richest man in England at the time. His name was Richard Venebles. He owned 2 hides of land (a hide of land is enough land to provide for one family for one year-maybe eight to ten acres today), a plow. A cottage and servants cottage, and two oxen. Last of all he had a servant. Ooooh! What wealth...!
Of course, a man was always allowed half of every Sunday for worship, but the other hald of the day, was spent helping others with their needs, such as helping build an animal shelter or fixing a crumbling wall. Ah! Then came Sunday evenings. Finally t
ime to relax and put his feet up before the fire...ooops! Did he remember to chop wood? No, thats his sons job. Since it was the only source of heat and cooking fuel in the house, most children spent a goodly portion of each day gathering sticks and cutting firewood. Often they might trade some of it for a little cream or a few eggs.
The girls were lucky enough to clean the house. Since there were no carpets, they worked at packing the dirt floors very tightly so that it wouldn't be dusty. If someone had a dusty house, it was a sure sign that their girls weren't doing their chores, and they might be scorned by their friends and others who came by.

They spent a chunk of the day heating water for cooking, heating water for cleaning, heating water for dishes...well you get the idea. Oh and don't forget that they first had to get the water from the same creek eveyone else had to draw from. Sometimes that walk might be a mile or better.
Then they washed the dishes from breakfast, before they made bread for the day.
Lucky for them Mother would make and bake the bread, but those dishes were always waiting for them! Mother would often have the kitchen so heated with a piece of meat she was cooking for the evening meal that during the summer days, the kitchen was a miserable place to be. She baked bread every day, and just as she finished that it was time to make lunch. Since there were no lunchables, she had to cook real food like steaks or potato stews or even carrot and barley chowders. That filled the kitchen with dishes again, and then it was time to begin preparing the evening meal. That usually took two to three hours, and of course the ever faithful dishes that waited for the girls.
Mother kept her own herb garden, and it too was a sign of what kind of woman she was. A tidy garden, weed free, and thriving was the envy of all her neighbors. They gossiped about the woman down the lane who had weeds and dying veggies. That was a sign of laziness, and that was a trait not tolerated in these hard times.
If everyone wasn't pulling his share of the load, food wasn't saved and ready for the long cold winters of the English and Scottish Highlands. It was the boys who hunted and made sure that meat in abundance was salted and preserved for the winter ahead. Tanning hides for blankets and coats and even decorative elements took a great deal of time. That was something they worked on more during the winter months when there was little else to do.
So next time you have running water or a warm bed without coals to itch your toes, just remember the poor slobs who thought coals were the height of luxury, and cabbage soup was manna from heaven!

..::Dear Abbey, By Sunfur Zion Rosestripe and You!::..

Dear Abbey
I have a problem here. Three days ago a tree fell on the
went wall, knocking off a lot of stone. Two dibbuns ran away, and a rat
came in. He has a poisoned blade and is hiding somewhere. we don't know
what he is after, but he has been here three days but still hasn't
attacked. What should I do? the Abbey warrior is away fighting against
robber stoats.
Signed Desperateandfrightened

Dear Desperateandfrightened
There is little I can say but, take up the blade! You must defend the Abbey and the dibbuns! Send all the
young and old inside to a safe place, then start a serch party looking for the Rat. Also, have the
moles begin reparing the wall so that no more Vermin can enter. I hope that helps! GBWY
Signed affectionately, Abbey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Abbey I gained some special powers from my father. unfortunately many people don't like me using them, I can't use them in games and if I use them in war then they try and throw me out of the army. I can't help having these powers, I was born with them, my father, grandfather, great grandfather, right back to Greenleaf Moonshadow who was the first squ... to have them. I feel sometimes that I should try and return to where I came from but I know that I belong here because Greenleaf Moonshadow's great grandfather came from Mossflower. What do I do? I can't exactly hide my powers.
Dear Powered up ad confused.
Be yourself. That is all I can say. No matter what, there will be creatures who do not like you. But needless to say, you have friends who love you. And who won't care at all. They will just like you for YOU! Use the powers you have been given for good. And the rest will come as it should. GBWY GBWY
