6 Players for each team, 12 overall start an NHL game, 1 Goalie, 2 Defence and 3 forwards.  There are 4 officals for every game, 2 linesman, and 2 referee's.

Face-off

A face off occurs at the beginning of the game and after every whisle.
Icing
When an opponent shoots the puck down the ice from his/her teams side of the red line (Center Line)
Off Side
When an opponent enters his/her offensive blue line before the puck enters.
Two Line Pass
When a player passes the puck across two lines (Blue lines or red line) to a teammate.
High Stick
When a player knocks the puck down with his/her stick over the shoulders.
Penalties
Boarding/Hitting from Behind:
When a player hits an opponent from behind, 2 or 5 minute penalty.
High Sticking:
(Minor) When a player hits an opponent with the stick above the shoulders, 2 minute penalty
(Double Minor) When a player hits an opponent with the stick above the shoulders and draws blood, 4 or 5 minute penalty.
Slashing:
Slashing an opponent with the stick, 2 or 5 minute penalty.
Tripping:
When a player trips an opponent, 2 minute penalty.
Cross-Checking:
When a player checks an opponent with the stick, 2 or 5 minute penalty.
Spearing:
When a player uses spear like motion to injure an opponent with the stick, 2 or 5 minute penalty.
Goalie Interference:
When a player interferes with the opponent goalie, 2 minute penalty.
Butt-Ending:
Using the Butt end of the stick to hit a player, 2 minute penalty.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct:
"Diving" to draw a penalty, or showing unsportmanlike conduct towards a game offical, or playing with a broken stick, 2 minute penalty.

Kneeing:
Sticking out the knee to trip an opponent, 2, 4 or 5 minute penalty.
10-minute Misconduct:
Game officals decision, mant reasons, 10 minute penalty.
Game Misconduct:
Game officals decision, many reasons, 10 minute penalty plus kicked out of the game.
Fighting:
When an player fights with an opponent, 5 minute penalty.
Instigator:
When a player instigates a fight with an opponent, 2 minute penalty.
Bench Minor:
When a team has to many players on the ice or delaying the game, 2 minute penalty.
Delay of game:
When a goalie shoots the puck over the glass, or when a team is delaying a faceoff.
Attempt to Injure:
When a player attempts to injure an opponent on purpose, 5 minute penalty and a game misconduct.
