Archimedes Becomes A Hero
Once upon a time a king gave his crownmaker some
gold to make a new crown. The new crown weighed
as much as the gold but the king suspected that
the crownmaker had mixed something else into the
gold meant for the crown and had kept some of the gold
for himself. The king asked Archimedes to figure
out how to tell if he'd been cheated without messing
up the crown. Archimedes was trying to figure it
out while taking a bath. As he floated in his bathtub,
he realized that everything loses some weight in
water so the weight of the crown and its loss of
weight in water would show if it were made of pure
gold. He figured out that he could put the crown in
a jar of water, catch the water that overflowed into
a bowl, weigh the same amount of gold as the overflowed
water, and see if that gold weighed the same as the crown.
Archimedes shouted 'Eureka!' (which means 'I found it!'
in Greek) and ran right out into the street yelling that
he solved the problem. So now what he figured out is called
the Archimedes' Principle. Oh yea, it turned
out that the crownmaker had cheated the king... which was not
a good thing to do.
