A Love Story

CHAPTER THREE

What was that, if I may ask? said Remus.

Oh, replied Michelle, thats a little protean charm I put on the sign. That way I can change it in here and not have to walk all the way to the front gate. Whatever this little sign here says, thats what the big one outside says. You know us Americans, were all lazy!

Remus laughed. I highly doubt someone who runs a successful shop could be called lazy.

You never know, said Michelle Now, why dont we get down to business, shall we? Michelle took Remus by the hand and led him back behind her shop counter, where she had a couple of stools. Now how this works is- but she was broken off by James coming into the room.

Mommy, is it time for lunch yet? Oh, said James, seeing his mother holding Remus hand. Are you going to do a reading on him, Mommy?

Remus and Michelle laughed and Michelle said, Yes I am, honey. James, this is Remus. Remus, this is my son James.

Remus dropped Michelles hand and shook James in return. Very nice to meet you Remus, said James politely. Mommy, can I tell him the rules of readings, pleeeeese?

Remus again laughed and asked Michelle if he was always this adult and she told him that yes, he was, but only when he really wanted something, which made Remus laugh again. A thought struck Michelle that she liked hearing this man laugh. It positively made his whole face light up with happiness. She turned to James and said, Yes, honey, you can tell him.

James began his speech almost from memory. He told Remus about how he needed to keep quiet and still, and about how he should not break the connection and that he should let his mommy break it first.

You forgot to tell him about the burning sensation, James, said his mother.

Burning sensation? Is this going to hurt? said Remus a little warily.

Michelle laughed and said, No silly, it just means that while I am inside your head, youll feel a slight warmth in your hands at the point of our contact. It doesnt hurt and it goes away once I break the connection.

Remus smiled and nodded his head as if to say he was ready. Michelle took his hands into hers and was struck with a sudden urge to lightly and lovingly play her fingers over them. Blushing slightly, she looked up into his eyes and was mesmerized by the clear true blue color. She didnt realize she was staring until Remus said, Are you going to start?

Oh, right, sorry, said Michelle. Well, here we go then. Michelle closed her eyes and began the process. She let her mind grow blank. It was as if she were a small child again watching TV. Only instead of watching a different channel, she was watching someone elses memories. Remus memories. She saw him walking in the twilight. She saw him looking up at the moon. Then she almost broke the connection when she witnessed his horrible and painful transformation from man to beast. He looked so helpless and in so much pain. Her heart broke for this man. She then watched as he set off into the woods in a gallop. After roaming around for awhile, he stopped and sniffed at the air. Suddenly, he stopped, and as he looked through the trees, Michelle saw herself walking out into the night from the back of her house. She watched the whole scene unfold as she had witnessed herself last night.

However, her resolve to not break the connection was tested sorely when she witnessed the next moment. Remus, as the werewolf, dropped down to the ground and began to eat the scraps she had tossed so carelessly only moments before. As he ate, another werewolf came upon him and began to attack him. The fight ensued into the dark recesses of the forest, and the connection to Remus memories was permanently broken with the sob of terror at seeing the other werewolf take an angry swipe at Remus face.
