We do not have a kennel outside. Our dogs are with us
on the front lawn in the back yard on holidays and also in the house. We keep
them clean and well mannered. We want them to be very social dogs. But a Jack
Russell is always a terrier so they need discipline.
There are tricks for raising these dogs. I've listed a few from
our OWN experience and they are as follows.
- The first year is the most important for teaching them commands. The
more time you spend with them the smarter they will be.
- Never teach them to speak or bark
they do this well enough on their own.
- A very important thing to teach them,
when they are a pup is to Stay on command.
- Rub their teeth, belly, pull their tail softly, hug them, they love every
bit of affection you give them.
- To house train a pup, send them outside. Now when they go outside,
they go to play and forget to go. When you bring them in wait about 5
minutes watching them all the while because now that pup remembers why it
wanted outside. Send them outside and tell them to go pee and wait till they
go. Remember to reward them when they have completed their mission.
- Don't
give them water late in the evening.
- Only feed them high quality dog food.
- We found, to save a few shoes give them
lots of rawhide bones to chew, it
helps.
- If you give the dog verbal discipline don't use their
name. Examples to use, "bad dog", "what's this",
"boy-o-boy". Their name should mean "good" and when you
call them they we retrieve more readily.
- Use their name in commands like "go get it dixie",
"sit dixie", "listen dixie" etc and do not forget to
reward them with treats. They will do most anything for a treat.
- We sell our to approved homes only. We do believe that if a person knows what Jack Russell
Terriers are all about and their characteristics. They should be able to
enjoy the love and companionship that we also enjoy from our dogs. To us, these
are one of the greatest dogs put on this earth.
- We do not have a kennel outside at present, we believe in proper discipline
and care. Our dogs have their personal couch (which they have ripped) and
dog toys though out the house. ;-)
- Our pups are kitchen raised because we
could never leave them outside.
