Tips and Tricks to raising your
Jack Russell Terror successfully, we'll maybe.
(Remember
these are only suggestions, they have worked with our terriers but every
terrier is different and have their own distinct personality.)
- You must prove to them daily that you are the
boss, master, leader of the house, top commander this will help
control aggression toward you or others in your family because when
you get after him/her they know they're in trouble from the top
commander.
- The first year is the most important for teaching
them commands. The more time you spend with them the smarter
they will be.
- Never teach them to speak or bark they do
this well enough on their own.
- A very important thing to teach them as a pup, is
to Stay on command.
- Rub their teeth, belly, play with their feet, pull
their tail softly, hug them, they love every bit of affection
you give them. When they grow older they won't mind if a child pulls
their tail or plays with his/her feet if you have done it all the
terrier's days.
- To house train a pup, send them outside. Now
when they go outside, they go to play and forget to go. When you
bring them in wait about 5 minutes watching them all the while
because now that pup remembers why it wanted outside. Send them
outside and tell them to go pee and wait till they go. Remember to
reward them when they have completed their mission.
- Don't give them water late in the evening.
- Only feed them high quality dog food.
- We found, to save a few shoes give them lots
of rawhide bones to chew, it helps.
- If you give the dog verbal discipline don't
use their name. Examples to use, "bad dog", "what's
this", "boy-o-boy". Their name should mean
"good" and when you call them they we retrieve more
readily.
- Use their name in commands like "go get
it dixie", "sit dixie", "listen dixie" etc
and do not forget to reward them with treats. They will do most
anything for a treat.

I liked your
site. The tips you offered for raising a pup were good ones. I
am a past breeder and current owner of two labs and have found these
tips useful in raising a pup of any breed. Carry on...Heidi in
