Amanda's Story    By Amanda's mom

After two miscarriages I got pregnant in Spring 2002 and I felt both happy and anxious. But to our surprise everything went as planned.Doctor's appointments came and went, and we were assured that everything was fine. With a scan we found out we were going to have a girl and from then on all we saw were pink dresses.
We picked names, all the while still wondering whether it would really be a girl.

Up until the 17th of December my pregnancy went perfect. That day i went to the doctors with my sister in law. The nurse took the doppler to check for the heartbeat. It took a bit longer I thought, I heard nothing. The nurse thought the batteries in the doppler might have run out and went to get another. Again nothing. She went to get a doctor and I was send for another ultrasound. During the ultrasound nothing was said. Once back in the examining room I was told they failed to find a heartbeat. My baby had died. they told me they'd ring the hospital and have my labour induced.
My sister in law rang my husband, who came over instantly and we all set off to the hospital.

After being induced I delivered a perfect little girl, who weighed 5lb 6oz and was 19 inches long. We named her Amanda. The umbilical cord had become wrapped around her neck which caused her to be stillborn.
My husband and I with some close family spent a lot of hours being with her. Cherishing whatever time we had with her and trying to remember every detail of her existence. The hospital helped by taking pictures, giving us a gown and hat, a cloth bear and a blanket, and a memory box. They treated us as well as you would have expected after having had a 'normal' delivery. We also recieved a plaster mould of Amanda's foot.

I am just going back to work and am trying to live my life as before. Maybe in the future I will try for another baby again, but for now I will try and sort out my feelings about all that has happened.
If anyone else has experiences like me I would be interested in hearing how you coped. Or if you have any questions about my story, you can mail me at:
