Have fewer dust-catching ledges. The fewer surfaces, the less dust!

Common surfaces. It's easier to clean everything if it's all plastic or
linoleum rather than having wood here, linoleum there, carpet there...

Easy-to-clean surfaces. This is best for counter-tops. You can get these
when you are building or considering a new place or want to replace
your old counter. You can also put cloth or plastic covers on your tv,
sofas, tables, etc. which can be easily removes and thrown in the
washer.

Stain preventers. Many stain-preventing materials are available to
spray on furniture and carpets, or get the stain-resistant kind of carpet.
Make sure that you buy a good professional preventer to save you in
the long run.

Leave the dust out - one of the main problems for floors is the mud and
dust and junk that's tracked in. Put a really good doormat at your door -
ones made of Indian coir are excellent or you can buy a heavy duty one
that will do the job right. Avoid those silly plastic ones or the bright
carpeted Welcome mats.

Get rid of the clutter. The less clutter you have around, the less there
will be to collect dust and dirt and the less you will have to clean later.
