| This is Wotan, and he is coming. The Lion of Israel (not the political State Israel) has spread his meteoric wings in the heavens. The archangel prepares to meet the sol niger in the center of the Earth, to make of the masculine portion of the dyas a unity. Genderwar is upon us. The Toxic Twins must be thrown down and mulched. If not, beloved America and this jewel of a planet will enter yet another Dark Age of unknown duration. That means terrible, terrible suffering for all peoples, and all Creation. The nightmare of history from which James Joyce was trying to awaken us is a byproduct of the clash of the opposites. Duality including all manifestations of warfare -- is an indispensable evil, breeding creativity and material creation, ratcheting technology forward exponentially. Strife and antagonism are the very means of progress. Human social and psychological development derive from the opposites of gender, and gender is the prime mover and shaker of the human experiment, the Great Work. But at some point -- and I think we have already reached it -- the creative returns from duality diminish. Joseph Campbell notes, "The unlike is joined together, and from differences results the most beautiful harmony, and all things take place by strife." (Campbell, page 44.) Plato's Symposium and the Hebrew Zohar, to cite only two sources, also trace duality's origin to a primal split between male and female. This shattering of the world into two seems to us the essence of normalcy. In fact, however, its a relatively recent phenomenon, not fully explicated philosophically until three thousand years ago. "Early in the first millennium B.C., Persian belief was reorganized by the prophet Zarathrustra (Zoroaster) according to a strict dualism of good and evil principles, light and dark, angels and devils, and so forth. This crisis profoundly affected not only the Persians, but also the subject Hebrew beliefs, and thereby (centuries later) Christianity. It represents a radical departure from the more usual mythological interpretation of good and evil as effects proceeding from a unique source of being that transcends and reconciles all polarity." (Campbell, p. 348, footnote) Here we see philosophy, cosmology, and social structure following the development of both patriarchy and consciousness, for we are here at the incipience of the break from what Julian Jaynes calls the bicameral mind, with ego-consciousness just beginning to ground itself in the world, and personality starting to emerge from assumptive, group-think maternalism. Here we discover the underpinnings of Judaism, Christianity and Islam -- the emphasis on dualism and on the strictures of paternal systems designed to keep consciousness from falling back into unconsciousness, of infant masculinity from being devoured by the old matriarchal maw. The dualistic world of the past few millennia -- the world of war and novelty, of reaction and contention -- is almost exhausted, materially and psycho-spiritually. Another world waits for rebirth it groans, as St. Paul noted. Our long eons trapped between the hammer and anvil of the opposites have distilled our differences and rocketed us into the hyper-evolution of culture, expanding our intellects, driving our technologies, diversifying our possibilities, opening the cosmos, shattering our hearts, and despoiling the planet in the process. As duality breeds strife and creation, the integration of duality brings wholeness and peace. The current intensity of American Genderwar is a marker pointing toward a final healing of the crack in the cosmic egg. It is prelude to a mass recollectivization in which our hard-won individuality and ego-consciousness operate co-existent, and in harmony, with collective energies and awareness. It is important to note that conuinctio does not dictate a condition of absolute moral relativism. Although human constructs of good and evil will indeed by broken and joined, this does not mean that anything goes. Indeed, human responsibility under conuinctio is increased, not lessened. In earnest, we take up the staff of shepherds, not rulers, of Creation. Good does not disappear, but much that is now sold to us as good under guise of power will be revealed in its true shape. What is transcended is reliance on coercion to enforce good. The abdication of vengeance, and the release of the Scapegoat from his shackles, is the key element here. Thats why the Day of Atonement ritual is central to Judaism, the first major patriarchal culture/cosmology. In its inner heart, the ritual is not about out-casting the scapegoat into the wilderness its about releasing the scapegoat from human psycho-social bondage, about embracing the prodigal, despite our hatred of him. Its about freeing the fallen Host from beneath the mountain of Dudael, where they are barraged and buried by the stones we cast daily upon them. Thus Michael journeys to Hell to meet with his brothers and the inner black sun. The Gnostics, forerunners of alchemy, posited that material Nature occults and imprisons scintillae -- sparks of eternal spirit. These scintillae, masculine essences, are liberated when the opposites conjoin, and are married to matter in the alchemical wedding. But Nature has no medium for joining the opposites, and such a medium is crucial: all dualities must have a crux where the spirals merge before continuing on, to prevent the tearing of the fabric of Creation that results when dualities fly apart and polarize irreconcilably. This state of mass alienation must not continue too long, lest the pole of attraction weaken irreversibly, and love itself die. Nature needed an avatar to stand for, carry, and incorporate, all duality in the animal, vegetal, mineral, and spiritual worlds. It also intuited that one day it would require a means of re-unifying the opposites. What Nature, or God, or Cosmos came up with, after a number of tries, was sentient human beings. (And let us not quibble about names -- its the process that counts, and we, after all, are only ignorant children.) |
