In the Jewish �Day of Atonement� ritual tradition, an offering of a scapegoat is made to Azazel, leader of the fallen Host held in prison under the desert, buried beneath a mountain of stones � reminiscent of the Hebrew tradition of stoning to death offenders of the social order.  In the Gnostic/apocryphal texts, the figure is Sammael, Satanael, or otherwise.  But his representation as the excluded masculine, and his elimination from the social order, is equivalent to the Hebrew Azazel.  In certain alchemical texts, including Gerhard Dorn's, the excluded masculine is the missing "fourth" whose inclusion completes the Stone.

In the Western tradition, Azazel � or the devil � is that aspect of the masculine which the social and political order refuses to integrate.  Thus, he must be suppressed, denied and scapegoated.  This is the inner meaning of the Hebrew �Day of Atonement� ritual.  The masculine must be entombed underground, held in iron bars, with a mountain of thrown stones upon it, lest the male escape and offend the machinery of money, power, vanity and artificial hierarchy.  The ritual is performed precisely because �atonement� never takes place � the masculine is never brought back into the fold.  The prodigal is never allowed to return, for on the day he does, the Temple of false power falls. Judaism then, like all Western cultures, remains a house divided.

It is helpful in this context to recall that both the Biblical and apocryphal reasons for the imprisonment of the masculine exactly match the central gender conundrums of both ancient and modern civilization: How to integrate sexuality and skyrocketing, dangerous technology into culture.  The fallen Host was imprisoned for two reasons: first, they had sexual contact with �the daughters of men,� meaning not only females, but young females.

Second, the "fallen Host"  introduced a cornucopia of technology to evolutionarily primitive human beings, which proved a double-edged sword.  Technology and active sexuality are manifestations of male libido, and in both instances the reigning social order wishes to use this libido for its own purposes, often in contradiction to, or indeed in blatant destruction of, males and masculinity itself.

Imprisoning masculine energy in hell � keeping Azazel, Sammael, or Satan chained -- serves a number of simultaneous purposes and meanings.   The sexuality and genius of the male can then be utilized by the �good folk� of the social order at will, advancing civilization according to their interests.  However, the burying indicates this is done in a state of unconsciousness, or denial.  This portion of the masculine can also be exploited as the whipping boy, the Scapegoat, for expiation of collective sin.

A pit in the earth is dug out, and all the �evil� in the culture is chucked into the hole and, literally, covered up.  Think that�s mere mytho-babble?  Look around you.  American men have been enduring this process for almost four decades.  The creation of a masculine �devil,� provides the culture with a handy container for its free-floating rage, frustration, malice, greed and guilt.  Paradoxically, it is this excluded, imprisoned, and scapegoated element of the masculine which brings the most benefit to civilization.  In modern American culture, white males are the demon-scum of the universe, the sole �class� denied cultural �protection.�  Yet they are also the core of genius that imagined, created, and maintains modern civilization.  Rather than afford them credit and gratitude, they are instead pilloried.

Modern Western cultures do not wish to atone with the masculine, nor liberate men, for this means the end of the old social order, the rule of the matriarchies and patriarchies.  Rule by power and coercion depend upon the exclusion of a Scapegoat.  All modern � and most ancient � cultures depend psychologically and materially upon this figure.  Croats, Jews, Gypsies, males � the hits just keep on coming.  It is also relevant that the central event of the Last Days described in the Book of Revelations is the freeing of the fallen Host � the imprisoned, scapegoated masculine element.  This incident releases the plagues of angelic justice which then cleanse the world (read: the old social order of the Toxic King and Empowered Witch) and clear the ground for the new millennium.

past the fountain The fountain is the revivifying, central point of convergence in traditional communities, and likewise the transforming Fountain of Youth at the center of hell � what depth psychology would call the mid-point of the unconscious aspect of the Self.

where they lifted her veil The lifting of the veil returns us to the hierodule, the sacred singing whore of the "Song of Songs":  "By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him but I found him not.... I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him.  I called him but he gave me no answer.  The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me and they wounded me, the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.  I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love."

To "lift the Lady's veil," without leave represents the intrusion of social and institutional repression into sacred marriage -- the trespass of law, commerce, and power into divine eroticism, a state that inspires her to projectile vomiting, literally making her �sick of love.�  Only the Captain, the Groom, may lift the Lady's veil.  Instead, the hypocritical guardians of society in sacrilege raise her shroud.
