Entheogen [god within; god- or spirit-facilitating] a psychoactive sacramental; a plant or chemical substance taken to occasion primary religious experience. Example: peyote cactus as used in the Native American Church.

Why not say hallucinogen?

Fri. 19: Religious Freedom discussion questions:

In a country that is dedicated to freedom of conscience and in the separation of church and state, what policy and legal hurdles do entheogens present?  Who has the right to determine what is or is not a legitimate religion or religious practice?  How might current laws accommodate entheogens?

What effects have entheogens already had on current religious practice, ritual, ethics, and the religious community?  Consider:

A recent poll of over 1,300 Americans engaged in Buddhist practice showed that 83 percent had taken psychedelics ? and 71 percent believed that psychedelics can provide a glimpse of the reality to which Buddhist practice points. Tricycle: The Buddhist Review (1996) (pp. 86-87).
