| .::An Overview::. | ||||||||
| It has already been mentioned in the introduction that this website attempts to uncover some of the spiritual and religious ideals that are found in Grey's Anatomy. This particular television show finds a balance in expressing both the spiritual and the scientific. Though it would first be assumed that a show set at a hospital would come from a scientific standpoint, Grey's Anatomy uses various points of view and beliefs to intensify the storylines of its characters. .::First, a doctor's position in the hospital must be discussed. There is a heirarchy between the residents and the interns on Grey's and this leads to a God-like mentality for some residents..and even in some interns. As a doctor, the ability to hold someone's life in your hands can be a very powerful thing. The residents, as well as interns can give life and also take it away...sound familiar? .::Next is the theme of death. From the death of Izzie's fiance Denny to Meredith's brief experience in an after-life, Grey's looks at the idea of dying from different angles. There is the cut and dry view that someone no longer is alive and the idea that when someone dies they move on to another life. As well, the grieving process can be discussed in terms of how the characters deal with the deaths of loved ones versus how they deal with deaths of patients. .::There is no definite line drawn between what is scientific and what can be explained spiritually on this television show. The interns belief in their work and in scientific theory overlap with their spiritual beliefs. .::Finally, there are moral lessons that can be drawn from Grey's. From being unfaithful to one's spouse, to the institution of marriage, to the power of prayer to help aid in a patient's recovery. Many of these ideas are reflected in the scripture of a number of modern day religions. .::Overall, it can be determined that Grey's Anatomy embraces both a scientific as well as religious perspective on medicine and health. |
