On a visit to the Karachi Museum which is a repository of the priceless
artifacts of the Indus Valley Civilization you come across a beautiful
piece of sculpture of Lord Brahma. It has four faces on all four sides.
Front, back and the two sides.
Looking at Lord Brahma's statue you wonder. Why FOUR faces? Suddenly Rudyard
Kipling comes to mind who once said:-
" I kept six honest serving men,
They taught me all I knew,
Their names are What and Why and When,
And How and Where and Who.
In Hindu Mythology there are several gods. A god for each and every
thing under the sun. Like a god for good fortune, of good agricultural
crop and rain, of education, of fertility etc. etc. Over the millennium
these gods have acquired different shapes and forms. Like Agni the god
of fire is two-headed. Asvinsis a twin god. Bana has 1000 arms.
Brihaspati is seven-mouthed, hundred- winged, sharp horned, blue-backed
and golden coloured. Hanuman is monkey-faced while Ganesh is
elephant-trunked. Rama is princely with fine livery. Shiva is
four-armed. Kali is threatening with a red hot lolling tongue.
Our search for the cause of the four-faced Lord Brahma continuing, we
look here and we look there. We finally learn from bits and pieces that
there was a king ages ago who commissioned an artist to make a picture
of Brahma with four faces. As the picture could not be 3-dimensional he got hold
of an sculptor. Hence the statue has come down to us. But why
four faces for Brahma only and not for other gods?
Our search finally leads us to the Mother of all Books, known to all
humanity as the Quran. This is a Book given by the Creator of the
universe to ALL humanity. This Book is NOT the property of any
particular religion, caste, sect or race. Anybody is welcome to read
it, study it and follow it to his or her own benefit ("Then whither go
ye? Verily this is no less than a message to (all) the worlds. (With
profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight".
Quran LXXXI: 25 to 27).
Mahatma Gandhi and Chairman Mao made extensive use of this Book and
both of them changed the course of history and destiny of the two
largest nations in the world. They would not start the day without
reading a couple of paragraphs (translations in their own language) for
their thought of the day.
In one of my previous articles: "WHO IS UNTOUCHABLE AND WHY" it has been
conclusively proved that Lord Brahma and his wife Sarah-Swati are none other but
Prophet Abraham (May peace be upon him) and his wife Sarah. So we looked for the
reason of the FOUR FACES again in the Quran >and look at what we found:-
Lo! Abraham said to his father Azar: "Takest thou idols for gods? For I
see thee and thy people in manifest error. So also did We show Abraham
the power and the laws of the heavens and the earth, that he might
(with understanding) have certitude. When the night covered him over,
he saw a planet: he said: "This is my Lord." But when it set, he said:
"I love not those that set." When he saw the moon rising in splendour,
he said: "This is my Lord." But when the moon set, he said: " Unless my
Lord guide me, I shall surely be among those who go astray."
When he saw the sun rising in splendour, he said: "This is my Lord;
This is the greatest (of all)." But when the sun set, he said: "O
my people! I am indeed free from your (guilt) of giving partners to
God."
"For me, I have set my "F A C E", firmly and truly, towards Him Who
created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners
to God."
(Quran, Chapter No:6, ANAM; Paragraph No:9; Sentences:74-79).
So this was the experience of Prophet Abraham's which inspired the king
of old to make a sculptor with four faces.
With these words, dear reader, I leave you to draw your own
conclusions.
