9.04.02:

let's play catch-up, shall we?

with school firmly underway, i've had less time to devote to the things i enjoy doing most; that is, watching movies, reading, and listening to music. however, i did find time to update my film, books, and audio sections of the site, so feel free to browse those at your leisure. i finally got my massive list of compilations into the audio section, but i've got approximately thirty old vinyl issues to weed through from my latest goodwill excursion. so enjoy those, and i'll have the old records in there sometime soon.

also, the whole thing about not being able to watch movies. well, it's a lie. labor day weekend i had the chance to check out my big fat greek wedding and the good girl in theatres, and in the bedroom on video. i've also got hedgewig and the angry inch on video to watch sometime betwixt now and sunday when it has to be returned.

greek wedding was on thursday night, and was really good, really funny. lindsay and i drove out to the kutztown strand, a very cool older theatre out in, yeah, kutztown. it's right off the main street, and we basically drove through the campus to get there. we thought we might see jason or hannah or audrey or maybe, god willing, kim, but we saw no one. so we went to the movie alone then. and really liked it.

friday night we took in the good girl, this time out at the manor, and i really liked it too. be forewarned: if you're expecting jennifer aniston's usual crap, along the lines of office space or picture-perfect or whatever, think twice. the movie is really dark, truly sort of depressing. it's sort of the female version of american beauty, i guess, in that it involves aniston's painfully lost justine looking back over her choices and realizing that somewhere along the way, she messed up. like lester, she tries to fix her mistakes before it's too late. mortality plays a large role in both movies, however, the good girl offers none of beauty's "happy" ending. it leaves you hanging, merely giving you a glimpse into what might be, and leaving you to form your own opinions.

i watched in the bedroom monday night, and it was incredible. a lot of the time, you simply hear so much about a movie and it's built up so much and you go into it with the highest of expectations, all these people being like "oh, this movie changed my life," and then you leave, and you're thinking well, it wasn't that great. however, this movie truly was. much of the action occurs within the first hour or so, with the murder of one of the main characters. the majority of the second act is merely the father and mother of the deceased coming to grips with the death. a lot of this section is in total silence and relies upon the actions, nuances and mannerisms of tom wilkinson and sissy spacek to convey their emotions. the third act ends with a shotgun blast, and then everything winds down, oh so slowly, to the bitter end. the movie is predictable, but it still holds you in suspense, in that you know how everything is going to end up, yet you're unable to look away, you're unable to tell just WHEN everything will come together.

so, yeah, i enjoyed all of them. check them out if you're so inclined. i'll let you know how hedgewig is once i get through it, but i've yet to begin it, and i have to work tonight, so, yeah.

other than that, things are well. i enjoy school. spanish is a little tough, but other than that, almost everything i've got is right along my lines of knowledge and interests. intro to psych, process of aging, they both fit right into my intended field of study, and the english courses and my college success skills class both help me to learn how to function at school, something i'm finding invaluable. there's a bit too much emphasis being placed on college skills, something i think should just be an easy, breezy class, but i guess they're going to try and make us actually work. oh well.

several people will be getting mixtapes from me before they go away. i've gotta start on one for fal and one for rachel, and i'm probably going to also send one to amber who's off at bloomsburg. of course, i'll first have to come up with the funds to procure these blank tapes, but hey. once i've got that, you can be on the lookout for some music from me, and also probably letters.

i can hear the elementary school buses pulling up to the stop outside my house. i can hear kids laughing and yelling. was that really seven years ago?
