False Light of the Four Gods
Chapter 16- To Seek the Truth, or Seek the Illusion
by: Asurahime
Azeruse's vision getting blurry and she was trembling with rage; it was taking all of her trained self-control to keep herself from completely losing her temper. Instead, she brought Asura down, under, and up to catch the hilt of Renhou's blade; this caused the blue weapon to fly out of his hand and down the bridge-- behind the seishi. Growling with anger, the demon charged the silent girl as to tackle her to the ground. He almost succeeded, but Azeruse's anger supported the little bit of strength she kept back. Acting with all the speed she had in reserve for dire times, the Light slapped Renhou as he came near her; then she stepped aside and slammed Asura's hilt to his temple, knocking him unconscious.
"Maybe this has taught you not attack our guide and destroy my friends' keepsakes any longer." Azeruse walked away from her enemy's unconscious figure and didn't look back as Renhou's body disappeared in a violet mist. Picking up the pieces of the shredded ribbon, the girl sheathed her weapon and walked back to her companions who have witnessed the entire thing.
Tasuki looked up at the younger girl anxiety in his eyes. "Aze, are you okay?"
Nodding, Azeruse replied, "I'm fine Tasuki.... but I'm afraid that the ribbon of Amiboshi's flute and Shosei aren't. Tenkou's messenger ruined it during our combat." All of a sudden, her attention was caught by the darkening red light of the midnight sun shining off strands of silver-white hair. "Oh yeah!! Tasuki, how is the Star?!"
"Not too good, Aze-chan. That blow he received from that bastard you fought was not one that a normal person can live through. Che, who would have known that Shosei really is one of those 'guardians'?!" Suzaku's seishi quickly went over to his newest companion and shook his shoulder. "Oiy, Shosei. Me o akete!! Wake the hell up already!!"
"Tasuki!! Let him rest. I'll take care of the stone."
Tasuki's amber eyes became filled with disbelief. How in the heck can this girl get rid of something which is more than ten times her size? Yet he has seen her perform every sort of miracle-- so it may just be that she has another surprise which can help them pass. "Azeruse, what are you going to do now?"
Smiling secretively, Azeruse thrust Asura's blade underneath the stone and tossed the entire formation high into the air with a brilliant column of flames to land twenty feet away from them. Looking back at Tasuki, Azeruse couldn't help but smirk at the expression painted on his face. "You were saying, Tasu-chan?"
"Dammit!! Why is it that ya never fail to surprise me, Aze!!" screamed Tasuki as he stood up, slightly shaken by what he had seen. Looking at other, silver-haired companion, the amber-eyed seishi detected slight movement. "Oiy, Aze-chan!! The baka of a fortune-teller is waking up! Me o akete, Shosei-kun~!! Open your eyes already!! Yer way past the beauty sleep range 'cause ya already look like a girl!!"
"Kore wa.... nani...." The Star began to open his eyes and sit up for himself. "What is this? Azeruse-san, Tasuki-san??" asked Shosei. Looking up, he saw Tasuki standing before him and Azeruse running towards both of them. What has happened to the demon who attacked us? The demon's ki had been extremely powerful, almost god-like... yet this corrupt blue-haired girl has managed to defeat it? ....... Maybe I underestimated the strength of these two...
A sudden icy wind began to blow around the three companions, yet it brought only pain in its wake. A locating spell has found its targets, and will now return to its caster to bring news of Renhou's defeat.
~*~*~*~*~
A cerulean-haired seishi now paces around an empty throne room, but the menacing aura which followed the Majin's presence still remained. A spell fixed on a frigid stream of air has returned, with a blast of light emanating from a glass surface as a reply.
"Miaka.... what have I done to make you treat me like this? I love you.... yet I hate you..." Tamahome looked at the crystal ball in the center of the room and viewed the face of a blue-haired girl. Suddenly, Azeruse was shielded from his vision by two figures: boy with silvery hair and blue-violet eyes and another boy with red-hair and amber eyes. "Move out of the way you cretins or I will destroy you!!"
Moving back, Tamahome lost his composure as his character appeared on his forehead with a dark violet light. He extended a hand before him and out of it, a ki-ball shot out and shattered the crystal sphere into sparkling motes of dust.
"Tamahome... you should really learn to control your temper. What would Tenkou-sama say if he saw what you did just now?" A tall, blue-haired man stepped forward and gestured to the corrupt seishi. "Your version of revenge is nothing compared to mine, so deal with what you have."
"Shut the hell up Hikou!! I don't need up preaching your crap at me today, or ever!!!" The violet-eyed boy stood up and faced his companion.
Hikou's gaze narrowed as he glared at Tamahome. "Don't try my patience, Tamahome. My power is beyond your imagination and you would not stand a chance against the illusions and phantasms which I can summon to destroy whatever soul you have left. I would hate to use my dominion over the potency of water just so that Tenkou-sama could reprimand me for killing one of his dogs."
"Ha! Do you actually think your little blasts of water can hurt me or them? If you notice, the girl has just beaten Renhou close to death, and only using her fencing skills. She had not shown any sort of special sword techniques during the spar. You have no idea how capable she is of beating a goddamn prick like you." sneered the seishi, hoping to strike a nerve.
Hikou's eyes widened and he raised a hand. A snake made out of pure water appeared in front of him and raced towards Tamahome at an impossible speed, trapping the seishi in a grip which ordinary water cannot do. Struggle as he may, he could not get free as the mage floated towards him and pulled viciously at the hair on the nape of his neck. "I know about your sharp tongue, Tamahome. I should cut it out." Hikou smiled calmly; that frightened Tamahome. No one as angry as Hikou is smiled, unless they are insane.
"Hikou!! I command you to let him be!" The figure of the Majin appeared behind of the shattered crystal orb. "Renhou is not available, and his sister is tending to his wounds. Tamahome, I want you to survey our opponent's progress. I trust that they will get the Shinzaho, but do nothing to them."
Hikou stared. "But my lord, I thought we were supposed to prevent them for ever laying hands on the treasures of two kingdoms... You will allow them to have that advantage!?"
"Shut up Hikou!! Tenkou-sama knows what he's doing. I don't like it either, but consider the fact that neither of us have a choice." spat Tamahome before he stalked away like an offended cat.
"I do not know why you trust him, Tenkou-sama. He may not be a seishi any longer, but he remains unreliable and obstinate. How can we comprehend that his motives are to serve you and not to help that blue-haired girl?" asked Hikou, his eyes in thin slits.
Tenkou faced the crystal sphere and raised a hand. Before him, the shattered glass infused itself back together into its former flawless state of being. "Of course I do not trust the boy... he has brought this upon himself. His pain, anguish, guilt, and hatred are what fuels his dark side.... Very soon, the shedding of blood and tears---the most ambrosial elixirs will flow and revive my power." The Majin stared at a blue-haired, violet-eyed figure who appeared on the orb. "And this girl shall be my means of resurrection."
~*~*~*~*~
Past the Gate of Genbu was a dark, frigid cavern seemingly without an end. Not only was it cold and dim, but even breathing was a task from the lack of human contact and the air filled with the smells of deterioration. It is apparent that it has been ages since any creature has ventured beyond the great doors... and from the numerous skeletons present on the ground, no one has ever been able to leave.
A group of three now treks the outer sanctum of the cave. Their hair tousled with weariness from battles and walking, and their spirits lower than they used to be. With nothing but the flame of Tasuki's tessen to shed light against the darkness which surrounds the trio, the cavern was more menacing that it normally would be.
"Shosei-san... is this the place? It is so dark... but I can feel a certain vibration which is filled with a power which isn't familiar to me..." said Azeruse, all of her senses on the alert, and Asura ready in her right hand. "A vibration of extreme cold... but it is not threatening either..."
The Star focused his violet gaze on the blue-haired girl before him. "What you are feeling is emanating from the Shinzaho of Genbu... the necklace the Miko wore during the summoning ceremony. You," he pointed a finger towards Tasuki. "will undergo a trial. And it begins as soon as the two who control the power of ice confront you."
Tasuki glanced at Shosei, wondering if their guide has gone of his rocker from the blow he received from before. However, the silver-haired man's face was completely serious without a trace of insanity. "What in the hell are you talkin' about?"
"Hikitsu.... and.... Tomite....." trailed Shosei, just before a sharp, pained cry sounded from behind him.
A glistening ice arrow has found its target....
"Azeruse!!! What's wrong?!" cried Tasuki, quickly handing his tessen/torch to Shosei. He quickly ran to his love and tried to see what was wrong. "What happened?"
Azeruse was on the floor, holding her right shoulder, where a diamond-blue colored arrow protruded from. "I-it's nothing, Tasuki. I shouldn't have dropped my guard!" whispered the girl as she threw her crimson sword on the ground, snapped the end of the arrow, tore the hem of her dress, and quickly bandaged the wound.
"What in the hell do you think you mean by 'it's nothing'!!? If ya notice, ye're bleedin' in a place of freezing cold temperature!!" cried Tasuki, his voice fervent with fear and worry. However, before he could start worrying about his friend even more, the light present in the room was extinguished. "Shosei! Why in the fu--"
"Hold your tongue, seishi!!", said a voice edged with steel. Shosei tossed the diamond weapon back towards Tasuki and quickly kneeled before the wounded girl. "What a protector you are, Tasuki. You can't even prevent an arrow from harming this girl. You are pathetic and insignificant. Azeruse deserves much better than you."
The red-haired seishi looked up in surprise, but remained speechless when he heard his companion say such a terrible thing. Unfortunately, what hurt the most was that he was starting to believe what Shosei was saying. Tasuki did not move an inch as the Star picked up his beloved and tended gently to her wound. "........... Miaka..."
Azeruse's stare was indifferent as she calmed herself and let Shosei put a tourniquet to stop her shoulder from bleeding. Holding up her hand, a brilliant sphere of light appeared and turned the darkness into light. Looking at Tasuki as if she was under a spell, she opened her mouth to speak. "Give me up, Tasuki. I feel safer with Shosei, and no matter how much you try to change yourself, you will always be a good-for-nothing."
That stabbed Tasuki through his heart worse than anything. With his heart breaking into a million pieces, the seishi didn't even notice that the light from the globe of Azeruse's hand has disappeared, leaving him in total darkness once again. "Why, Aze?! Everything that I have done, I've done for you!! Is it too much to ask for someone as insignificant as I am!? Too much to ask that you allow me to love you!?"
-You don't deserve my love....-
"I know that better than anyone!!" cried the red-haired boy as he dropped to his knees in grief.
-She deserves better than someone like you.... just look at yourself.... worth nothing...-
"I am worth nothing.... I could not even protect the only one I have ever loved from an arrow..."
_It was but a mere arrow... you could not have done anything to stop it from happening._
"Yes I could have!!"
-Give it up...-
-Azeruse will be much better off without someone like you...-
_Seek the truth.... or seek the illusion..._
Tasuki looked up and saw the black of night being pierced by a ray of crimson and silver. "What do you mean?"
_Pick me up, Illusion-Wolf._
Suzaku's Seishi dragged himself to where a vermilion sword was lying forgotten but shedding much-needed light to the obscurity of the sanctuary. Upon touching the sword, Tasuki noticed that it was Asura.... but what's more... Azeruse would never go anywhere willingly without her sentient weapon. "Asura, where are they?"
_Somewhere you cannot follow because you lack the light which is present in them._
"A light that is within them?"
_Yes, a virtue which gives one the power to protect, not destroy. You have this power, but you are oblivious of what it is. Fire is a power which cuts both ways. It can warm or it can burn, depending on the wielder._
"What in the hell? I don't understand you."
_What do feel now?_ asked Asura.
"I have never been more confused in my life... nor have I ever been so terrified."
_Fear means you have a lack of control... then it can give way to anger. You should know by now that the Shosei and Azeruse who have recently slighted you are just mere illusions. They would never say such falsehoods._
"Who said that what they were saying weren't true?" cried Tasuki, his mind whirling about him like the clouds in the sky which have just broken their calm as if before a storm. "I am a damn fool!!"
_TASUKI!!_ screamed a voice which cut through all his senses, the bitterness, anguish, and pain welling up inside the seishi diminished in a quick haze of crimson. A red weapon, now shining whiter than the sun has been embedded in the snow at his feet, but along with the crystalline glow of the blade, streaks of the darkest red were visible.
"You lack the power to protect.... you can only destroy what is before you.... burn... pillage... murder. That is the gift that fire can bestow upon another.... the gift of eternal torment... and the offering of painful death..." A man with long hair and a patch over one of his eyes appeared towering before the fallen seishi, his one good eye shining fiercely with annoyance.
"How weak can you of the Suzaku and Seiryuu Shichiseishi be? You already have the help of each other, and the help of one of the Guardians, but you remain deficient of the power to see through the illusions of the Genbu Seishi? Pathetic...." Another young boy with dark hair emerged from the darkness, with a bow and a quiver full of arrows across his shoulders. Both men were as implacable as a blizzard, and that blizzard was about to test the spent seishi before them. "Illusions..... are nothing more than mirages... images created by one's imagination and will. Nothing can break them..... except for one thing..."
The taller man walked forward, holding out his right hand before him and closing his eye in concentration. "I am Hikitsu of the Genbu Shichiseishi..... your two companions have already fallen, and it is your turn to join them in their misery. None of you are fit to bear the Shinzaho of Genbu..."
The other boy stepped forward, ice arrow on string and ready to be released at the slightest motion from Tasuki. "People call me Tomite... and I shall silence your fears forever. Until a name can be given to the power of protection, the lives of many shall be extinguished..."
_.............. Raise your weapon, Tasuki._
The red-haired boy looked at the brilliant weapon before him and looked down at the diamond fan on his lap. "Why? There is no damn reason why I should fuckin' stand up. My dominion is fire remember, and I can only destroy...." said Tasuki lifelessly as an arrow of ice tore through his shoulder, striking a stream of blood and drawing a pained cry from him.
_Are you willing to just throw away your life!? The entire world is counting on you and are you just going to throw it all away!? Then you really are a fool! You promised Azeruse!! No, you promised Miaka! You promised that you would protect her... you have been ready to die for her.... this time, you should be ready to live for her. She has spared your life; and instead of submitting to the power of two Gods, she broke the spell to spare you from any more harm!! Remember!!_ cried Asura in great anguish, quickly forcing raw energy into Tasuki's mind. Another spell..... of a different kind of illusion...
A silver barrier of physical energy fended off the ice-based spells and attacks of the two Genbu Seishi, making Tasuki impervious to their attacks; but he himself went into a type of coma. Shutting his eyes, the amber-eyed seishi felt the cloud in his mind dissipate into another time and another place.........
~*~*~*~*~
Tasuki fell to the floor with a strangled cry of pain, but he still managed to look up. Although, as soon as he did, he wished he could have been blind for the person who he loved most is the one who tore him apart....
"Foolish, that was a foolish move by you.... I warned you again and again, but you just didn't listen..." hissed Azeruse.
Tasuki's face was pale with grief and bloodloss. "Why.... Azeruse, why!!!??? What have I done, and what have they done to you? What has happened to my little sister with the clear, calm, and beautiful eyes the color of the night sky who told me all her fears and insecurities just last night?!! You aren't her! You may look like her, but you'll never replace Miaka!"
Azeruse raised her sword above her head, about to deal the final blow. Although, the sword was pulsating with a steady white light... something it has never done before. "As I have told you before, I am not here to answer your questions, but only to accomplish my mission. Goodbye, Suzaku Shichiseishi..."
The red-haired seishi closed his eyes as the sword quickly descended. Seconds passed, but he had not felt the cold blade even pierce through him. Instead, he saw a radiant silver light burst into life even though his eyes were tightly closed.
"I.... I.... can't do it..... Not to my... Aniki...."
Opening his eyes, he saw that Azeruse was still poised over him, with Asura still above her head. Despite the icy rain which was falling, he felt a single drop of warm water drop on his cheek. Looking up, he saw that the girl's sword had white flashed of light running along its surface, reviving everyone around him, including himself. More so, he examined his beloved and saw that no longer were her eyes the scarlet color of a dying star, but has been restored to the color of the ocean at dusk.
"Tasuki... I can't... I can't kill you. I'm sorry..." Azeruse let go of Asura, but the sword remained suspended on the air. "I'd never kill you... I can never kill anyone as important to me as you!!"
Tasuki wrapped his arms around the girl as she buried her face in his coat, muffling the cries and shedding the tears which broke even the spell of two gods. "Shh.... it's okay.... I know that it wasn't you... so don't cry... you know that I don't like to see you cry..."
~*~*~*~*~
"AsuraRevenge!!"
A familiar incantation..... by an even more familiar voice. Tasuki felt himself being shaken and began swimming back from the darkest depths of his mind, back to the guiding light of reality. Opening his eyes, he saw a silver blur immediately be replaced by a flashes of ice-white and blue. "..... Da...re..." His body was threatening to return to its state of half-waking when he was suddenly shaken more feverishly than before.
"Tasuki-san!! Me o akete! Azeruse-san won't be able to survive if you don't help her now!!", yelled a boy's voice that was high with panic and worry.
Tasuki forced himself awake and looked at the scene before him. Sure enough, his Azeruse was desperately trying to hold off the onslaught of Hikitsu and Tomite..... and was losing. Her blue hair was in complete disarray, her breathing fast and irregular, and her body was shaking from the cold and covered with cuts and bruises. Quickly throwing off the vermilion cloth which covered him, realizing that it was Azeruse's cape. Holding on to an edge of the material, Tasuki realized that she has given it to Shosei so that Shosei might be able to keep him from freezing during his time of unconsciousness. Enough was enough, he didn't give a damn about saving the world; now that he knows that the Azeruse and Shosei from before truly were nothing but phantasms, Tasuki was ready to do whatever it takes to get them out of the darkness and back into the light.
"Aze-chan! Get down and support my spell!!" yelled Tasuki as he jumped up and waved his tessen into two perpendicular arcs. "Rekka Shinen!!"
Glancing up in surprise, Azeruse immediately caught on to what her friend was saying and dropped to the sidestepped two arrows which flew past her at an incredibly dangerous speed. Slightly smiling in relief that Tasuki was all right, the blue-haired girl raised Asura and quickly slashed upwards, creating a huge fire vortex which tore through Hikitsu's concentration and fueled Tasuki's spell to greater heights.
"Foolish mortals!! Do you think that this power of yours will destroy us?" said Tomite, forming an ice-wheel on his right hand and throwing it like a discus at Tasuki's direction. However, before coming within a few feet from its target, it was struck by a white staff, shattering the disk upon contact and sending the sharp edged shards of crystal back to its caster.
Azeruse and Tasuki looked back at Shosei, who held up the white staff before him on a guard position with a shy smile on his face. Smiling wider, the Star nodded his head before his face twisted back into a fierce mask of deep concentration. The image of a star once again graced his forehead as the three companions turned to face their judges together.
Hikitsu and Tomite exchanged glances before focusing their attention back to the three teenagers. Sighing in assent, Hikitsu raised a hand, and globes of light brightened their surroundings. However, the two seishi of Genbu were surprised at one thing: the snow which had been on the ground is now gone, and in between the two groups, a single blade of green poked out from out of the surface of the earth. "How could this happen? The snow which was here was supposed to be eternal.... yet that fire...."
Tasuki and Azeruse sheathed their weapons as Shosei's staff disappeared. The red-haired boy stepped forward and confronted the two men alone, silently begging Shosei and Azeruse not to interfere. "Now you see. I don't only have the power to destroy. Fire is a weapon which can give life as well as take it... it depends on the person who wields it. The power I have inside me is only enough to protect myself... but I am willing to risk my life to take care of those important to me. Just as my 'sister' offered me back my life, so I now use it to keep her from harm."
Without another word, the cavern before them vanished and the three companions were now in a beautiful room which resembles a throne room. However, instead of a throne, a necklace of amethysts and gold lay peacefully on the far side.
"You have passed the test.... the Shinzaho of Genbu is yours to take, but be careful on how you use it. It is a tool, and tools can be used for good or for evil.... depending on the wielder." smiled Tomite as he took off his hat and gestured to the necklace.
Hikitsu nodded to Tasuki and Shosei before bowing before Azeruse and kissing her hand. "You all have a long way to go.... take care of each other, and guard each other from harm, just like what you represented today. One of the three virtues has been remembered.... one shall be gained..."
Tasuki walked up to the Shinzaho and hesitantly picked it up, afraid that something will happen once he touched it. When he realized nothing was happening to him, he turned back to his companions and grinned with triumph. They have reached their next goal.... and the Shinzaho in Sailo is what remains. Looking at Azeruse, Tasuki's heart grew tight with anxiety... does she love him or does she not?! Yet he has changed from what he was... he will not force her to love him.... he loves her too much to do so.... besides, there is always the future.
"Azeruse, Tasuki... it's time we headed for Sailo..." said Shosei quietly, brushing his hair from his face.
Azeruse nodded and smiled back at Tasuki, holding out her hand towards him. "Let's go, Tasuki.... We'll have nothing more to fear as long as we all stay together."
Tasuki smiled back in assent and took her hand in his, intertwining their fingers and holding tightly to the Shinzaho. He didn't mind when he saw that Azeruse also held out her other hand to Shosei, for he knew that their friendship was something which will last forever. However, when they reached the gates, he suddenly stopped on his tracks and turned back to ask the two Genbu Seishi one last question. "Hikitsu, Tomite!!"
....... But the gates have already closed, showing one last true vision of the two men waving them farewell and good luck on their journey...
Looking up at her companion, Azeruse blinked in confusion and called out his name. "What's wrong?"
"I just wanted to know what is the virtue which is the 'power to protect what is important'.... but I guess I'll never know..." sighed Tasuki mournfully.
Shosei burst out into full laughter at his sorrowful tone, then stopped himself when he saw Azeruse and Tasuki staring strangely at him. "Tasuki-san... the power to protect what is important has been within you all along. It is a strength which fills you completely and makes you who you are. You say that you lack it, but I have seen enough today to know that it is a virtue to be remembered for all time."
Tasuki looked back at his silver-haired friend. "Then what is it?"
Azeruse smiled and tightened her grip on their fingers, not wanting to let go of her companions. Then, she answered her best friend's question.
"Courage."

Three Virtues Remembered, One Virtue Gained
"What do you want me to do? I can't do anything right!! I'm only your guardian, but I can't help the way I feel... I am useless and you are both better off without me." cried Shosei, trying to hide the tears which streamed fiercely down his face.
Azeruse was completely taken aback by the strength of his words. "Shosei... don't think like this! You know that you are not without a purpose, just like everybody else in this world... Me, Tasuki, Hikitsu, Tomite, even Asura!"
The silver-haired boy looked out of the window of the house and focused his attention on the distant horizon. "Ever since I was young, I knew that I was different from other people.... but until now, I never worried about it so much. You and Tasuki now seem to just compel me to come with you on your journey."
"It's it because you're the 'Star'... one of our guides?" asked Azeruse, moving to stand next to him. "You shouldn't think so little of yourself."
"No Azeruse... don't you understand?" whispered Shosei, turning to face her. "Since the beginning, I didn't care whether or not I had to come with you.... by force or by my own will. I wasn't even going to show myself until I saw something which caught my attention like a stab through my heart."
Azeruse remained looking out of her window as she sensed Shosei make his way towards the door. "Is that why you tried to take Asura?"
"Yes, but not in the way you mean." The platinum-haired boy gazed back towards the blue-haired seishi as blue-violet eyes met blue-violet. "From the very start, you were the reason why I took it upon myself to make this trip along with you and Tasuki..... I am making it because I believe I have fallen in love with you."
