| The small village of Wollmesheim, home to the Reis family, was at different times part of both France (20km away) and Germany. For further information look for the hisory of nearby Landau at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landau . The Australian War Memorial has listed its extensive photo library on the web. Go to www.awm.gov.au then search 'Reis' for photos of family members. On 28 October 2002, the Albury Border Mail featured the Reis family's 150th anniversary and unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Dr Klaus-Peter Klaiber, Ambassador for Germany. Go to www.bordermail.com.au and search for Reis to see articles online. Please note that this website has recently removed most of its archives, which is unfortunate. Search the Australian National Maritime Museum 'Welcome Wall' database in Sydney to find the earliest record of the Reis family's arrival. Go to www.anmm.gov.au and search for 'Reis' in the database. Several books have been written about early German immigrants to New South Wales. See Greetings from the Land where Milk and Honey flows by Patricia Cloos for further reference to the Reis family. Also, contains histories of other families and Albury. The author lives in Canberra however the book is now out of print. Check availability online (try www.bibliofind.com) or in secondhand bookshops. Also look for titles by Howard Jones. The Mitchell Library in Sydney and the LaTrobe Library in Melbourne both contain extensive newspaper archives. For example, see the Sydney Morning Herald for 17 November 1852 for a letter to the editor by some of the passengers of the 'Peter Godeffroy' (including J G Reis) |
