10th NZ Reiki Masters� Gathering
held at Christchurch 3-5th November 2000

33 Reiki Masters who came from near and far. Auckland = 2; Christchurch = 12; Invercargill = 1; Kaikohe = 1; Nelson = 1; Oamaru = 1; Picton = 1; Queenstown = 1; Rangiora = 1; Taupo = 1; Upper Hutt = 2; Wanaka = 1; Wanganui = 1; Wellington = 6 and Whangarei = 1.

Reiki Masters began arriving early Friday. This meant plenty of time to renew friendships, receive special light healing from Robin Lockhart from Queenstown, go shopping, and get ready for the Gathering. The 10th NZ Reiki Masters� Gathering officially started at 6pm. Thirty three Reiki Masters sat in circle in the lounge at Woodlands. In ten years this gathering was the biggest held. After being welcomed to the Gathering by the Christchurch host we introduced ourselves and said where we had travelled from. Then it was dinner. After a beautiful meal we returned to the circle and held a meditation which included lighting candles and sending absent healing for world peace. We concluded the evening by giving each other Reiki treatments (sitting in chairs).
Saturday 4th November

Agenda

On Saturday morning we set an agenda for the Gathering. The subjects put forward for discussion by those attending the Gathering were:

Reiki NZ Inc
The Chairperson and the Secretary of Reiki NZ Inc attended this year�s Reiki Master Gathering. The Chairperson reiterated that Reiki NZ Inc works for and is responsible only to members of Reiki NZ Inc and is not responsible for and to those people who are not members. More information about Reiki NZ Inc can be found on their website at: www.reiki.org.nz

It was asked why Reiki people don�t know about Reiki NZ Inc. The society has advertised the itself in Healthy Options, Rainbow News and Reiki News. The committee has also asked that Reiki Masters tell their students about Reiki NZ Inc. Advertising is expensive and Reiki NZ Inc is limited by its budget. Reiki NZ Inc presently has 120 members in NZ and overseas, with 7 Reiki Practitioners chartered.

It was questioned whether Reiki practitioners should be allowed to be members of Reiki NZ if they are residing and working overseas. By law Reiki NZ Inc has no jurisdiction over them ie: for malpractice or complaints procedures. Should such complaints arise, under the rules of the Society, Reiki NZ Inc can only investigate them in NZ. The questioner further pointed out that a claim for malpractice via the Charter from an overseas Reiki practitioner who is a member of Reiki NZ Inc could jeopardise the Bulk Insurance Policy for chartered members of all modalities which is part of their annual Charter membership fee. She further asked why these overseas folk were not joining the Reiki Society in the country where they were residing and practicing. The Chairperson said the overseas members are New Zealanders who are presently living and working in another country. He said it was their choice to be members and at present Reiki NZ Inc has no problems with them being members.

Issues about the administration, rules and other matters that pertain to Reiki NZ Inc should be brought up at the Reiki NZ Inc AGM which is held each year in June - usually in Taupo during the weekend of the Reiki Retreat. (This retreat is held every year at the Tauhara Centre in Taupo for all lineages and all levels of Reiki. Contact Reiki Retreat, Box 523, Taupo. By law AGMs are open to the public so non-members can attend. However, any suggestions made by non-members would only be acted upon at the discretion of the committee.

NZ Natural Health Practitioners Charter
Reiki NZ Inc was originally set up in 1995 so it could be a signatory of the NZ Natural Health Practitioners Charter. Reiki NZ Inc has information available for it�s members about the Charter. To become a Chartered Reiki Practitioner you have to be a member of Reiki NZ Inc. They will provide you with the application form to be chartered. Once your application form is approved by Reiki NZ Inc it is then sent to the Charter for acceptance. Contact Reiki NZ Inc, PO Box 60-226, Titirangi, Auckland for the application form and for more information about being a member.

Frank Ajarva Petter�s Seminar
Questions were asked about why Frank Ajarva Petter�s seminar is only available to members. (It should be noted that it was Reiki NZ Inc members who were concerned about this. Most non-members didn't know about the seminar). It was pointed out to Chairperson that excluding non-Reiki NZ Inc people from Frank Petter�s seminar was unfair considering they had been allowed to attend his last seminar in New Zealand. It was felt that his seminar could have been offered at a higher fee to non-members. Once again it was pointed out that Reiki NZ Inc is responsible only to its members and therefore it does not have to ensure it provides training or seminars for non-members. If non-members want to attend the seminar then they can join Reiki NZ Inc. Frank Petter is aware that his seminar is only for Reiki NZ Inc members.

ACC Approval for Treatments
The Chairperson said that the NZ Natural Health Practitioners Charter has a Government Liaison Officer who is looking at setting up a framework that would get Government approval for the 70 natural health therapies it represents so they would be recognised by such agencies as public hospitals and ACC. He believed that approaching Government through the Charter was the best way to get approval for Reiki Practitioners to be ACC providers. He felt this matter should be left to the people within the Charter who are responsible for this. He did not think a direct approach by Reiki practitioners would be as successful as one coming from the Charter.

International Reiki
At 11.30am three Reiki Masters gave talks about Reiki in their own countries: Two Russian Reiki Masters talked about teaching Reiki in Russia. They presently live in Christchurch but originally come from Siberia in Russia and they go back there at least twice a year to teach Reiki. Their students like the scientific approach that they bring to their Reiki Classes. They were trained in Malta by two New Zealand Reiki Masters who learnt Reiki through the Reiki Network Association. They told us that they have helped epileptics by giving them heart attunements every day. They found that the number of fits experienced by the epileptics were significantly reduced using this method. They also had good results using heart attunements followed by Reiki treatments for people with brain tumours. They are keeping a database of treatments and the results.

The Japanese Reiki Master who is now living in Christchurch spoke about Reiki in Japan. She also learnt Reiki from a New Zealand Reiki Master who lives in Hong Kong. She showed us pictures of Mount Kurama and the monastery. She intends visiting there in May next year to attend a special moon festival held at the monastery. She would be happy to act as a guide to a group of Reiki Masters if anyone wants to go along with her.

Reiki in the Work Place
After lunch three Reiki Masters talked about Reiki in the Work Place. One spoke about using Reiki in Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation. She said that walking your talk is very important when you use Reiki in your place of work. You have to be very honest about your results. She had to make a formal application to her hospital to use Reiki. She collected as much evidence as she could about using Reiki for drug and alcohol rehabilitation to support her application. The media discovered that she was using Reiki in the hospital and wanted an interview. She declined. She said the hospital did not want the publicity - there is no guarantee that the media would have presented it in a positive light.

The following books were recommended for those people who wanted to work in hospitals.
The second Reiki Master spoke about using the symbols in meeting rooms and to help with discussions between people where she works. She said the symbols find their own answers. She also uses Reiki on funding applications to empower them.

The third Reiki Master gave an interesting talk about using Reiki with her cranial sacral practice.

After the three speakers had spoken there was time for questions and answers which also covered the agenda subject �taking info about Reiki into the work place� to which the answer was to �walk your talk� - set an example.

Standards of Reiki Teaching - Different Forms of Reiki
The question was asked how can standards for teaching Reiki be set when there are so many different forms of Reiki. On Friday evening we gave each other a Reiki treatment (sitting in chairs) and when we looked around the room everyone was doing the treatment in different ways (placing their hands in different positions and using a different order of hand positions).

The Chairperson of Reiki NZ Inc said that the NZ Natural Health Practitioners Charter was presently negotiating with NZQA about setting frameworks for the standards of teaching for all their 70 signatories - this includes Reiki. Reiki NZ Inc has not yet been notified of the frameworks. When they are they will then determine what standards will be required to fit the frameworks.

It was also asked that Reiki NZ Inc provide training that will bring Reiki Masters up to the standards required by NZQA when they become effective. The Chairperson said this would have to be considered after the framework for NZQA standards were known and if Reiki NZ Inc decided to do this it would only be available to members.

Guest Speaker - Lesley Kenton
At 5.15pm Lesley Kenton arrived to talk to the Gathering about Shamanism and Healing and about healing in general. She believes that we have come to this life as perfect seeds with the aim of growing into our full potential. Health is about realising our potential. When we are obstructed from our potential we become ill. When we are encouraged to fulfil our potential we become healthy.

Dinner
We went to �Untouched World� for dinner. It is a shop which sells possum fur products (known as NZ mink) that has a restaurant at the back of it. We were able to browse through the shop before dinner.

 Sunday 5th November

Competency and Responsibility and Reservations about Choosing Reiki Master Trainees
There was a lot of stimulating and thoughtful discussion about this subject. Views ranged from not making any judgement about who to train as a Reiki Master to holding a formal interview and getting prospective students to fill out a questionnaire and then deciding if they are suitable. Ultimately it is up to the Reiki Master to choose who they train and how they go about selecting their students. The best criteria is: do you feel comfortable and at peace with the process you use for selection?

ContinuingTraining for Reiki Masters
There is a need to encourage Reiki Masters to continue their education as Reiki Masters. The guest speakers at the Gathering created an awareness that many Reiki Masters have experience which other Reiki Masters find interesting and helpful. It was also agreed that the Reiki Masters Gathering was an opportune time for furthering Reiki Master education. It was recognised that each Reiki Master�s experience is valid and can contribute to the knowledge and experience of other Reiki Masters. We should increase education awareness for Reiki Masters. This would help toward Reiki Masters being more professional.

Reiki and Vet Medicine
Another guest speaker talked to us about using Reiki when she worked as a Vet. Her stories about saving the life of a baby cougar and the lives of her own domestic kittens were inspiring as well as entertaining.

Professionalism
It was felt that this subject had been covered in many of the other discussions during the weekend and it was decided not to revisit it again.

Kirlian Photography
One of the Russian Reiki Masters gave a demonstration of Kirlian Photography. This type of photography was developed in Russia and photographs the energy in the auric field around the body. One of the Reiki Masters present had the aura of her fingertips photographed before and after a Reiki Heart Attunement so we could all see the effect Reiki can have on the energy of the aura. It was an interesting demonstration. The person who demonstrated the Kirlian Photography has used it before and after 1st Degree Reiki classes. He said that there was a noticeable increase in the energy field after someone receives 1st Degree attunements.

Next Gathering
The 11th NZ Reiki Masters� Gathering will be held in the Wellington area on the first weekend of November 2001. Everyone enjoyed hearing from speakers and it was suggested that we have speakers again for the next gathering. It was also suggested that the gathering start earlier on the Friday and end at a later time on the Sunday afternoon.

Please make a note of the Reiki Masters gathering in your diary and if you intend to fly to Wellington then it is suggested you book early to get discounted fares. The venue for the next gathering will be notified in February 2001.

Thanks
Thanks go to the Christchurch Reiki Masters for organising and holding the Reiki Masters Gathering this year. They did an excellent job and presented a well run and interesting Gathering. Once again it was a great opportunity for Reiki Masters to meet, make new friends and renew old ones. There was an enormous amount of open sharing both in circle and at lunches, morning and afternoon teas, and over a bottle of champagne late on Saturday night.
