Vann - Boone

S. Montraville Vann was born May 1852 in Alabama and his father was born in Virginia . He was a farmer and he rented the property he was living on. He could read but couldnt write.

Minnie Boone was born November 1864 in Alabama and according to census records she couldnt read or write.
Minnie's first child was Nellie Vann was born September 1879. At the time of her birth Minnie was not married. Nellie who was born well before the census of 1880, was not even listed. In Lucy Cohen Vann's book about the family Nellie herself said that she "was not a Vann but was raised as a Vann and married a Vann". She married Vann. They had one child named, Minnie, like Nellie's her mother. Minnie was born in December of 1899. By the 1900 Census of Madison County at the age of 20 she had married, had child and had been widowed. She actually had not been widowed, her spouse had actually moved back to his parents home, and she back to hers. Apparently this was not an uncome occurance during these times. MawMaw said Nellie married a Martin. According to census records Nellie could read and write. On June 28th 1911, Nellies daughter, Minnie was recored working at Dallas Mill weaving at the age of 12.

Mont and Minnie were married . They lived in New Hope, Alabama. In 1900 they were recorded as living in Poplar Ridge, AL, which is northeast of New Hope. Together they had 8 more children. By 1900 only 5 of Minnie's children were still living. Maw Maw knew of Nellie, Lena, Robert and Otey so I would assume these are the 4 of the 5 children that lived to see adulthood.

On October 14th 1890, a Murt and Minnie Vann had a male child in New Hope, Alabama . This could have been Eula and the gender was recorded incorrectly or was misread by the archivist. Or it could have been one of the children that didn't live to see adulthood.

A Minnie Vann was listed in the Dallas Mill records, if they are the same Minnie she was born in 1878 some time between July 10th and November 19th.

2. Lena Vann was born in 1891 or November of 1885 . Grandmother said everyone said her name leaner and in the census of 1900 it was even spelled Lener, probably because that it is what the told the census taker. Lena married a Brazleton, she had a son named Woodson and a daughter Lillian, born in 1912. Lillian married Charlie Bryan, born 1901. Lena would visit with Maw Maws family and Grandmother said she would sit around reading true story mystery novels and dip snuff. She was short and had dark hair. Lena died in 1962 and is buried next to her daughter Lillian and son-in-law Charlie in Maple Hill Cemetery in Block 105.

3. Odie (otey) Vann was born in April 1888.

4. Eula Vann was born October 19th 1896 or 1891 or October 1890 . She married Hence Maddox.

5. Hattie Vann was born in April 1893.

6. Robert Vann was born November 1899. Maw Maw said he was mean as a snake. Robert had two sons. His twin brother is Roy. On May 7th 1912 he was listed as working at Dallas Mill at the age of 13.

7. Roy Vann was also born November 1899.

At some time Minnie moved to Huntsville and lived on Oakwood Avenue with someone, probably renting a room, after Mot died. At some time part of her house burned.
