Fanning - Maddox

Henry Lowe Fanning was born February 16th 1909 in New Market, Alabama. He weighed thirteen pounds!! He was the only child of Henry and Mollie Fannings marriage. His family lived at Mountain Fort Creek in New Market. He also went to school in New Market. He wanted to be a doctor but he stopped going to school in the 11th grade to help take care of things at home . After his father, William Henry Fanning, died in 1933 Lowe and his mother decided to move to Huntsville. The grandchildren called him PawPaw.

Stella Pauline Maddox was the first of thirteen children born to Hence and Eula Maddox. On March 19th 1913 she was born at her Grandmother Rindys house on Dallas Avenue, where her parents were living at the time. Dr. Brooks delivered her; she only weighed two and a half pounds! Her Grandmother said she looked just like a skinned rabbit. Rindy took care of her, she put her in a box and kept her by the sewing machine while she was sewing. After about 2 months she had got fattened up.

Stella went to kindergarten in a big house on Oakwood Avenue. After completing her first year of school she went to Rison on Andrew Jackson Street across the street from the kindergarten. She went to school at Rison until the 6th grade. For 7th and 8th grade she went to school in Hollywood, Florida, where her father had gone to build houses. After they moved back to Huntsville she stayed at home to help Momma.

At the age of nine her family moved to 1127A OShaugnessy and she lived there until she was married. Maw Maw said she remembers getting water from the water pump for the house (today it is located by the Barbershop). Her Grandmother lived just down the street at 1105 OShaughnessy and Charlie and Ella lived next door to Rinda. When Stella was about 15 she went to the mill to see about a job in the spool room but she just couldnt stand the racket. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her MawMaw.

In December 1937, Henry Lowe and Stella met at Fannings Grocery Store, where she worked occasionally. Lowe and Harvey had been hunting that day. He walked her home and he visited the next Monday (he couldnt visit on Sunday because he had company coming over). J. D. Camp married H.L. and Stella just a few months later. They went to Mr. Camp's home in Flintville, Tennessee on February 12th 1938. Mr. Camp was out working in the field so they had to wait for him to get cleaned up before he would marry them . Henry Lowe and Stella lived on East Clinton, along with his mother Mollie. They moved to 1206 Bierne Ave (the number have since changed and it is now a different house number). They rented this house from Harvey for about 15 years. While living at this house Paw Paws mother, Mollie died.

On March 30th 1942, Henry Lowe and Stella had their only child, Linda Joyce Fanning
.

Linda would go with Paw Paw to visit some friends that lived on 5th Street (what is now Andrew Jackson), they lived right next door to a grocery store. Linda and the other kids would go in the store and buy a dimes worth of bologna and cheese, they would eat all they wanted then throw the rest at cars as they were driving down 5th.

In about 1955, they moved to a new house in Five Points next door to Uncle Baddie.

Paw Paw had several different jobs over his lifetime. He worked at Spry Funeral Home selling insurance . Hed say that they would eat bologna sandwiches while they were embalming people, 'why there aint nothing to it' (the funeral home was located in 5 points where Regions Bank is today at Pratt and Andrew Jackson). While working at Spry they offered him the apartment above the funeral parlor, rent-free, but Stella didnt want to live there so they didnt. He also worked for the Fire station and then sold insurance again. Then he got a job on the arsenal at the Water Treatment Plant. The Huntsville Directory lists him as a pump operator. He worked there for thirty years. Paw Paw died July 2nd 1981 and is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Maw Maw also worked several different jobs. She worked at Jewells Shoe Store for about two or three years (Jewell is her Brother Floyds wife). The store was located on Washington Street just above the drug store. One day Maw Maw remembers a man and a lady were outside of the store, and he doubled up his fist and hit her in the nose. Someone called the police and came and got him. Floyd and Jewell also owned another shoe store on Meridian Street that Maw Maw worked at sometimes. She also worked at Top Dollar for about 3 years. She worked at Lincoln School for about 2 months in the lunchroom but the business dropped off so they didnt need her to work anymore. Stella and Linda both worked at Evangel School in the lunchroom for a few years (the school is located off of University Drive, it is now West Minister School). Maw Maw died in 2005 and buried next to Paw Paw in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Linda Fanning went to elementary school at East Clinton then she went to Huntsville Junior High. She graduated from Huntsville High School. She married Shannon Warren. They had three children. 1. Don Warren married Marla Stacey. They had one child, Brooke Warren.
2. Lynn Warren married Franklin Reid. They had one child, Heather Reid.
3. Debbie Warren married Mark Poole. After Marks death she married John Tipton.
When Linda was 16 she worked as a clerk at Woolworths for about a year and a half. When Lynn was 6 months old Linda worked on the arsenal. Then when Debbie was five she went to work at Evangel School and Debbie got to go to kindergarten for free. Later Linda worked at Christies and Stephanies they were both jewelry stores in the mall.
