| Some of our readers will be
unfamiliar with earthquakes, but in our part of the world they are
quite common, and many of us have even become blasé about
them. So, for your enlightenment, here is a brief account of the
quake
this morning (10 April, 2004), which had its epicentre near the centre
of the South
Island -- and quite close to the surface. Fortunately it was a
very mild one or there could have been some serious damage. 7:36am I was in the kitchen when suddenly I heard something rattling below me. The baking trays were dancing their way out of the littly cubby hole next to the oven. Then there was a deep rumbling noise... the high chair shot its way across the floor and came to rest against the bench... it was difficult to avoid collisions while walking. The cupboard doors flew open and the contents of the pantry were spewed forth over the floor. Then, tired of that game, Juanita headed for the lounge. I was left standing in the mess worrying about aftershocks. |
