Be sure to spend some time in Downtown Las Vegas. Before the Strip, there was -- and still is -- Glitter Gulch. The casinos and hotels here are smaller than on the strip, but they are still great fun. You can get a very nice room here at a really low price.
To compete with the strip, the downtown casinos covered several blocks of the main drag downtown -- Fremont Street -- to create what might be called a gambling mall. It provides some nice shade during hot days, but a night it is amazing. The entire canopy is a three block long light show. The casinos cut their neon lights and the canopy is suddenly electrified with a great computer generated show complete with music and sound effects. There is a different show every 20 minutes. The call it the Fremont Street Experience -- it is worth seeing.
While you are downtown, be sure to visit Binion's Horseshoe. It's one of the oldest gambling halls in Vegas and is still the best. The focus here is pure gambling -- no frills. You'll get the best games with the best odds in town. In case you are hungry, we visited thier formal restaurant and had one of the best steak dinners ever, with all the trimmings, dessert and a drink and got change back from a $10 bill. It's the best deal in Vegas.
OK, the Regular Guys dropped a few bucks in Vegas...but it was well worth it for the fun and entertainment. With cheap buffets, low cost shows and inexpensive hotel rooms, it all balances out. We'll be back. You should come too. Just leave your checkbook and ATM card at home and bring an extra pair of shorts!
