| The Regular Guys could not come to California and not visit the famous wineries. While Northern California's Napa and Sanoma Vallies get most of the attention, there are also some fine wines produced in the south coastal region. Most of the vineyards are concentrated in a valley near the town of Temecula, about an hours drive north of San San Diego. See map. That is where we headed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A notch in the mountains that separate this valley from the Pacific Ocean has created a perfect micro-climate for growing grapes. Sitting in this picnic grove at the Mt. Palomar Winery, we could look out on hundreds of acres of wine vinyards. It made us thirsty. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The tasting room at the Mt. Palomar Winery. Like most of the wineries, for $3 you get a taste of 6-8 of their best wines. This was probably our favorite of the wineries we visited. We especially liked their Cream Sherry. The Riesling was also excellent. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Some other wineries worth visiting (from left to right): Thornton Winery -- They are best known for their champaigne. This is a great place to eat. Wonderful outdoor restaurant. Stuart Cellars -- a smaller operation with some excellent wines, especially the Chardonnay. Be sure to try the chocolates filled with their port wine! Callaway Winery -- Very good selection of wines. The Viognier is excellent, so the the Merlot. We have found some Callaway wines back in Columbus. Maurice Car'rie Winery -- Beauriful new tasting room and gift shop. The only winery we visted that does not charge anything to sample their wines. The Sara Bella is a wonderful blush wine. The Heather Mist is a terrific white.
