New England
Vermont
Vermont is noted for its beautiful scenery, including covered bridges like this one. Almost any route you take in Vermont is a scenic route. Route 9 between Brattleboro and Bennington is one of the most accessible. There's a nice restaurant on Hogback Mountain with a view of more than 100 miles. Wilmington is at about the half way point and is a beautiful town with nice shops. You can head north from there on Route 100 and drive thorugh the Green Mountain Range. You'll pass many ski resorts (some also offer summer activities). You can return the same way or cross the mountains and head south to Bennington on Route 7.
The Motel from HELL!
We've told you about some wonderful places we have stayed during our travels. This is NOT one of them. It was late at night when we got into Bennington. We had not booked accomodations ahead because we were not sure where we wanted to stop that night. Everyplace we checked was full. Everyplace but one. It was late...we were tired. It was awful. Dirty sheets. Stains of dubious origin. Sticky carpeting. Cigarette burns. Door locks that didn't work. Noisy air conditioners. The list goes on. Bennington is a wonderful town. We've gone back and found nice accomodations at other motels. We'd tell you the name of this place, but we don't want to get sued. Remember the photo and watch out!
Paying respects to the man who loved "birches"
There are interesting things to see in Bennington. There is a nice Revolutionary War monument, an interesting museum and the grave of one of America's most beloved poets. Robert Frost was always Bob's favorite so we went to the grave yard to pay our respects. We found him under the birch trees. On his grave stone is written, "I had a lover's quarrel with the world."
