This tour begins in the woods of northern Maine. We crossed the international border from Quebec near Moose River. The drive across Maine on U.S. Route 201 is really beautiful. Part of the drive follows the Kennebec river (shown here).
This is really remote country. You'll drive more than a hundred miles before coming to the first city of any size, Skowhegen. As this sign attests, moose are a big issue here. They are a major source of traffic accidents. They are big, they go where ever they want, and they can really mess up a car going 60 miles per hour.
