| Tracing your family tree - Records of
births, deaths and marriages dating back to 1837 are held at the Register
Offices for the district in which the event occurred.
If you want to
trace your family beyond that date, you could contact a range of
genealogists or agents of the Society of Genealogists at 14 Charterhouse
Buildings, London, EC1M 7BA. If you think they had a coat of arms,
you can obtain further information from the College of Arms, Queen
Victoria Street, London, EC4 4BT. |

Before
1837, the main means of establishing where births, deaths and marriages
took place is by reference to baptisms, burials and marriages in local
parish church registers. Generally, they are kept in the local
County Record Office of the area concerned.
Where
to start - Speak to as many living relatives as possible to start
building a picture of your family tree based on first-hand accounts.
It can be helpful to use a portable tape recorder to make the note-taking
easier. You may also want to seek copies of any photographs that are
available. Then you can dig deeper at the appropriate Register
Office.
